  • The sonic nozzle is widely used as reference device for calibrating flowmeters In gas flow measurement and its use requires the Critical Flow Factor(CFF) based on the thermodynamic properties of the gas at the nozzle throat. ISO-9300 provides the calculating method of the factor. But since the CFF from this method show an error over ${\pm}0.5%$ In specific conditions and of ${\pm}0.1{\sim}{\pm}0.2%$ in common Natural Gas(NG) custody transfer condition. this method cannot be applied for gas flow measurement with sonic nozzle. Each research bodies or organizations of the world have joined in order to calculate the CFF more accurately. They have performed these works using their own method and compared the results with each other under the management of ISO. KOGAS have joined those works, because the high-pressure natural gas flow calibration facility of KOGAS will be constructed in late 1999, and then had necessities to calculate a CFF accurately. The calculation method of KOGAS was using the equation of state from AGA-8('94), high accuracy model of ideal gas properties and the solutions of thermodynamic equations. The evaluation results have had a very good consistency within ${\pm}0.05%$ in most NO custody transfer conditions compared to the speed of sound for methane and also shown that the CFF was within ${\pm}0.1%$ compared to the results of other works of the world.

  • A cartridge type hydraulic logic valve consists of simple two port valve whose poppet is closed or opened by means of pressure signal of a pilot line. Accordingly, the logic valve can be used not only for direction, flow and pressure control purpose but also for versatile function valve which enables all above mentioned functions. In addition, the valve has little internal leakage and pressure loss, superior response characteristics and easiness in making small block type valve. The above mentioned good performances being recognized recently, the logic valve has been used widely in the large scale hydraulic system such as a hydraulic press system, for the performance requirements of high speed operation and precise control characteristics. However, there are scarce reports until now, except for a few ones from Aachen Institute of Technology in West Germany, so it is necessary to be studied on development and investigation for practical application. This paper showed that the static and dynamic characteristics of a logic valve when the logic valve is used for directional control, to investigate the relations between the valve operating characteristics and the valve design conditions. From the above mentioned procedure, it was ascertained that the valve operation characteristics obtained by numerical analysis showed good agreements with experimental results. The representative results obtained are as follows; 1. During the valve is closing, the poppet velocity is almost constant in the logic valve. 2. The pilot pressure P sub(3) and the resistance R in the pilot line have much influences on the valve operation time. 3. Spring strength have not such a severe influence on the valve operating time. 4. The operation characteristics of the logic valve can be estimated with good accuracy comparatively by numerical analysis with the equations describing poppet motion.

  • The purpose of this research is to determine the dynamic Magnus effect data of a spinning projectile in wind-tunnel testing. In the present work, the high-speed wind-tunnel tests for the Magnus effect measurements were conducted on a 155-mm spin-stabilized projectile model in the Agency for Defense Development's Tri-Sonic Wind Tunnel at spin rates about 12,000 rpm. The test Mach numbers ranged from 0.7 to 2.0, and the angles of attack ranged from -4 to +10 deg. The validity of the wind-tunnel measurement techniques was evaluated by comparing them with the previous test results on the same configuration. The experimental results show that fair to good agreement is obtained with resonable accuracy.

  • A scaled version of a roller rig is developed to demonstrate the dynamic characteristics of a railway vehicle for academic purposes. This rig is designed based on Jaschinski's similarity law. It is scaled to 1/10 of actual size and allows 9-DOF motion to examine the up and down vibration of a train set. The test rig consists of three sub-hardware components: (i) a driving roller mechanism with a three-phase AC motor and an inverter, (ii) a bogie structure with first and second suspensions, and (iii) the vehicle body. The motor of the rig is capable of 3,600rpm, allowing the test to simulate a vehicle up to a maximum speed of 400Km/hr. Because bearings and joints are properly connected to the sub-structures, various motion analyses, such as a lateral, pitching, and yawing motion, are allowed. The slip motion between the rail and the wheel set is also monitored by several sensors mounted in the rig. After the construction of the hardware, an experiment is conducted to obtain the natural frequencies of the dynamic behavior of the specimen. First, the test rig is run and data are collected from six sets of accelerometers. Then, a numerical analysis of the model based on the ADAMS program is derived. Finally, the measurement data of the first three fundamental frequencies are compared to the analytical result and the validation of the test rig is conducted. The results show that the developed roller rig provides good accuracy in simulating the dynamic behavior of the vehicle motion. Although the roller rig designed in this paper is intended for academia, it can easily be implemented as part of a dynamic experiment of a bogie and a vehicle body for a high-speed train as part of the research efforts in this area.

  • The purpose of this paper is to obtain an accurate nonlinear system model to test various control schemes for a motion control system that requires high speed, robustness and accuracy. An industrial sewing machine equipped with a Brushless DC motor is considered. It is modeled by a neural network that is configured as an output-error dynamical system. The identified model is essentially a one step ahead prediction structure in which past inputs and outputs are used to calculate the current output. Using the model, a 2 degree-of-freedom PID controller to compensate the effects of disturbance without degrading tracking performance has been de-signed. In this experiment, it is not preferable for safety reasons to tune the controller online on the actual machinery. Experimental results confirm that the model is a good approximation of sewing machine dynamics and that the proposed control methodology is effective.

  • New results of dependence of magnetic field, trapped by a stack of HTS tapes, on amount of tapes in a stack are reported. Commercial GdBCO tape 12 mm width and without Cu layer was used for the research. Tape was divided in square pieces $12{\times}12mm^2$ from which stacks were formed. Filling factor of the tape was about 1.4%. Measurements were carried out for stacks with height from 5 to 250 pieces and at wide temperature range from liquid helium to liquid nitrogen. Both FC (field cooling) and ZFC (zero field cooling) cooling methods were used in the research. These two methods show matching results with good accuracy. As a result dependences of trapped magnetic flux on amount of tapes for different temperatures were received. Research shows, that with increasing height of the stack trapped magnetic field value reach saturation at about 60 tapes in a stack for low temperatures. From 60 to 100 tapes increase of magnet flux is only 5%. Thus increase amount of tapes in a stack is not profitable. Also investigation of trapped magnet field relaxation was carried out. Relaxation speed decreases with increasing amount of elements. It means that the higher the stack is, the longer trapped flux will be held in cause of the same temperature.

  • In this paper, we propose a binarization algorithm using LVQ-Merge clustering method for fast and accurate extraction of cells from cell images. The proposed method clusters pixel data of a given image by using LVQ to remove noise and divides the result into two clusters by applying a hierarchical clustering algorithm to improve the accuracy of binarization. As a result, the execution speed is somewhat slower than that of the conventional LVQ or Otsu algorithm. However, the results of the binarization have very good quality and are almost identical to those judged by the human eye. Especially, the bigger and the more complex the image, the better the binarization quality. This suggests that the proposed method is a useful method for medical image processing field where high-resolution and huge medical images must be processed in real time. In addition, this method is possible to have many clusters instead of two cluster, so it can be used as a method to complement a hierarchical clustering algorithm.

  • This paper deals with the algorithm development that inspects defects such as Bright Defect Dots, Dark Defect Dots, and Line Defect caused by the process of LCD(Liquid Crystal Display). While most of LCD production process is automated, the inspection of LCD panel and its appearance depends on manual process. So, the quality of the inspection is affected by the condition of worker. Especially, the more LCD size increases, the more the worker feels fatigued, which causes the probability of miss judgement. So, the automated inspection is required to manage the consistent quality of the product and reduce the production costs. In this paper, to solve these problems, we developed the imaging processing algorithm to inspect the defects in captured image of LCD. Experimental results reveal that we can recognize various types of defect of LCD with good accuracy and high speed.
