JAEA started the LSTF experiments in 1985 for the fourth stage of the ROSA Program (ROSA-IV) for the LWR thermal-hydraulic safety research to identify and investigate the thermal-hydraulic phenomena and to confirm the effectiveness of ECCS during small-break LOCAs and operational transients. The LSTF experiments are underway for the ROSA-V Program and the OECD/NEA ROSA Project that intends to resolve issues in thermal-hydraulic analyses relevant to LWR safety. Six types of the LSTF experiments have been done for both the system integral and separate-effect experiments among international members from 14 countries. Results of four experiments for the ROSA Project are briefly presented with analysis by a best-estimate (BE) code and a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code to illustrate the capability of the LSTF and codes to simulate the thermal-hydraulic phenomena that may appear during SBLOCAs and transients. The thermal-hydraulic phenomena dealt with are coolant mixing and temperature stratification, water hammer up to high system pressure, natural circulation under high core power condition, and non-condensable gas effect during asymmetric SG depressurization as an AM action.

A head-neck complex dummy, for measuring brain pressure and reaction force in the cervical spine was developed for experimental study related in injury mechanism. Dummy comprised aluminium-casted head with water filled cavity for simulating brain and mechanical neck assembled with six motion segments. Several kinds of experiments (compression, bending, cyclic modulus, relaxation and constant velocity profile) for the developed mechanical neck showed that this neck model is biomechanically reliable compared with in-vitro test results. As an application of developed head-neck complex dummy, shock absorbing properties of protective helmet was chosen. The experiments showed that the maximum pressure increment of brain after impact was tolerable compared with the guide line for mild brain injury pressure (25psi). Constrast to this results, the reaction force in the neck was high enough to produce failure in the cervical spine.

Due to the ozone depletion and global warming potentials, some refrigerants(CFx and HCFCs) have been rapidly substituted. R410A is considered as the alternative refrigerant of R22 for the air-conditioners used a home and in industry. Experiments on the condensation heat transfer characteristics inside a smooth or a micro-fin tube with R410A are performed in this study. The test tubes 7/9.52 mm in outer diameters and 3 m in length are used. Varying the mass flux of the refrigerant and the condensation temperatures, the average heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop are investigated. It is shown that the heat transfer is enhanced and the amount of pressure drops are larger in the microfin tube than the smooth tube. From the heat transfer enhancement coefficient and the pressure penalty factor, it is found that the high heat transfer enhancement coefficients are obtained in the range of small mass flux while the penalty factors are almost equal.
This study proposes a few-shot learning model for extrapolating the wind pressure of scaled experiments to full-scale measurements. The proposed ML model can use scaled experimental data and a few full-scale tests to accurately predict the remaining full-scale data points (for new specimens). This model focuses on extrapolating the prediction to different scales while existing approaches are not capable of accurately extrapolating from scaled data to full-scale data in the wind engineering domain. Also, the scaling issue observed in wind tunnel tests can be partially resolved via the proposed approach. The proposed model obtained a low mean-squared error and a high coefficient of determination for the mean and standard deviation wind pressure coefficients of the full-scale dataset. A parametric study is carried out to investigate the influence of the number of selected shots. This technique is the first of its kind as it is the first time an ML model has been used in the wind engineering field to deal with extrapolation in wind performance prediction. With the advantages of the few-shot learning model, physical wind tunnel experiments can be reduced to a great extent. The few-shot learning model yields a robust, efficient, and accurate alternative to extrapolating the prediction performance of structures from various model scales to full-scale.

Reduction of acoustic loads of space launch vehicles can be achieved by acoustic absorbers satisfying strict cleanness requirements. This limited the use of general porous materials and requires non-porous sound absorbers. Micro-perforated panel absorbers(MPPA) is one of promising sound absorbers satisfying the cleanness requirement for launch vehicles. However, its applicability was limited to low sound pressure levels according to the acoustic impedance model of micro-perforated panels. In this paper the applicability of micro-perforated panel absorbers at high incident sound pressure was investigated in experimental ways. The absorption characteristics of a micro-perforated panel absorber was simulated according to its design variables, e.g., minute hole diameters and aperture ratios. It was shown that optimal design can be readily done by using proposed design charts. Experiments were conducted to measure acoustic properties of the designed micro-perforated panel absorbers. The results showed that acoustic resistance increases rapidly as incident sound pressure level does but change of acoustic reactance can be neglected in a practical point of view. This caused the decrease of peak value of absorption coefficient at high incident sound pressure level, but the amount of reduction can be accepted in practice. The major advantage of the micro-perforated panel absorber(wide absorption bandwidth) was still kept at high sound pressure level.

It is difficult to fabricate and maintain moving parts of expander at cryogenic temperature. This paper describes numerical analysis and experimental investigation on a cryogenic reciprocating expander without moving piston. An intake valve which takes high-pressure gas, and an exhaust valve which discharges low-pressure gas, are connected to a tube. The inside pressure of the tube is pulsated for work production. This geometric configuration is similar to that of pulse tube refrigerator but without regenerator. An orifice valve and a reservoir are installed to control the phase of the mass flow and the pressure. At the warm end, a heat exchanger rejects the heat which is converted from the produced work of the expanded gas. For the numerical analysis, mass conservation, energy conservation, and local mass function for valves are used as the governing equations. Before performing cryogenic experiments, we carried out the expander test at room temperature and compared the performance results with the numerical results. For cryogenic experiments, the gas is pre-cooled by liquid nitrogen, and then it enters the pulse tube expander. The experiments are controlled by the opening of the orifice valve. Numerical analysis also found the expander conditions that optimize the expander performance by changing the intake pressure and valve timing as well as the opening of the orifice valve. This paper discusses the experimental data and the numerical analysis results to understand the fundamental behavior of such a newly developed non-mechanical expander and elucidate its potential feature for cryogenic application.

The objective of the study is to investigate the depth of penetration of concrete water forced in under pressure. For this purpose, the experiments for the depth of penetration by selecting the factors and levels such as water pressure, pressure time were executed. The flow of water of concrete examined theoretically and experimentally. As a result, It is found that in the case of low water pressure approximately 0.15Mpa or less, the flow is Darcy seepage flow, the same as flow in an ordinary sand stratum, whereas in the case of high water pressure, the flow is diffused seepage flow accompanied by internal deformation of concrete.
This paper presents the hydrodynamic effect by the journal speed, eccentricity and source positions in order to overcome the defects of air bearing such as low stiffness and damping coefficient. Choosing the two row source position of air bearing is different from existing investigations in the side of pressure distribution of air film because of the high speed of journal and the wedge effects by the eccentricity. These optimal choices of the two row source positions enable us to improve the performance of the film reaction force and loading force as making the high-speed spindle. In this paper, The pressure behavior in theory of air film in high speed region of journal according to the eccentricity of journal and the source positions analyzed. The theoretical analysis has been identified by experiments. The results of investigated characteristics may be applied to precision devices like ultra-precision grinding machine and ultra high-speed milling.
Solid particle erosion wear characteristics of high Cr white iron hardfacing were investigated using the erosion wear test method according with the ASTM G76-95. Wear experiments, where the blast angle, blast distance and blast pressure were selected as test variables, were planned and analyzed by response surface method (RSM to evaluate the wear loss statistically and quantitatively. The measured wear losses well coincided with the calculated ones by the experimental equation. The wear loss of high Cr cast iron hardfacing was increased with blasting pressure, but affected in a complicated way by the blasting angle and distance. Erosion wear of high Cr cast iron hardfacing could be well predicted by RSM analysis of wear variables.

Bag-filter system has been widely used in industrial field to remove the particulate matters from the exhaust gas. The cylindrical type of bag-filter has been generally used. But it has many shortcomings. The reattachment of separated particles on the surface of bags could result in high pressure drop of bag-filter system and subsequent decrease of air flow rate since the cylindrical type bag-filter system should have the upward flow pattern. In addition, the supply of very high pressure pulse air jet to remove particulate matters on the surface of filter could result in a frequent rupture of bags. To overcome these shortcomings of the cylindrical type, the rectangular type was developed in the developed countries and imported to Korea. But, there was not many design data available to understand the mechanisms. Thus, the fundamental experiments were conducted in this study to get some ideas about the pulse jet cleaning of rectangular type bag filter system. The experimental factors are as follows; pulse distance, pulse duration, pulse interval, pulse pressure and pulse nozzle type. Experiments followed the factorial design method. With the shorter pulse distance, the distribution of pressure drops was relatively not uniform while the particulate removal efficiency was higher. With the longer duration of pulsing and the more number of pulse nozzle, the removal efficiency was higher and the pressure drop distribution was more uniform.
