  • During the last three decades power electronics has gone through energetic technical evolution. The technical needs from wide area such as in industrial, commercial, consumer, aerospace and environmental applications have driven the environment favorably for the power electronics. In the future, two extreme technology-expansion trends are expected: one into low power, and the other into very high power. The former is based on the high frequency and the circuit miniature using VLSI circuit and surface mounting aiming for the system-on-chip (SOC) technology. The latter includes the application areas of power utility such as HVDC, FACTS and SVC and large science area of electrophsycal apparatus such as thermonuclear fusion, acclerators, and electric guns. This paper describes the technology status of some major elements which are available today and the key roles of the power electronics from view points of applications. The author would like to take this opportunity to raise discussions about the future technology development trend of power electronics in our country with the fellow power electronics engineers.

  • Digitalization of processor and increase of control information need the fiber optic data network which has excellent noise immunity and high-quality, widebaudwidth information transfer capability. It is aimed to offer a fiber optic dataway system for measuring and control the power plant, that has high reliability, high data transmission rate and small cable duct with large transmission capacity.

  • This study investigates the design factors of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) which is applied to Hybrid electric vehicle as a driving power. Recently, there are many studies of IPMSM for application to Hybrid Electric Vehicle, because IPMSM has characteristics of high torque, high power density and high efficiency which come from reluctance torque due to difference of inductance as well as magnet torque. This study analyzes the inductance and design characteristics of IPMSM by using finite element method and focuses on design and analysis of IPMSM which can operates with high efficiency at low speed range. For this embodiment, magnet shape is changed from conventional block type to arc type without any change of outline dimension of motor and this change of magnet shape makes it possible to increase back EMF and sinusoidal waveform. Analysis results are verified by test of improved and embodied motor. As a test result , increased back EMF and sharply decrease of harmonics are secured and through this contribution of reduced fuel consumption of Hybrid electric vehicle is expected.

마이크로파대 고출력 트란지스터 증폭기의 설계와 시작 (Design and Fabrication of S-band Ultra High Power Transistorized Amplifier)

  • 주로 TWT로 사용되어 오던 2GHz 대 고출력증식기를 근래 개발되어 시판되기 시작한 microwave bipolar transistor를 사용하여 설계 제작하였다. 특히 고출력을 얻을 목적으로 balanced amplifier로 구성하였으며 microstripline을 사용해서 우수한 impedance정합효과를 얻었다. RF출력의 divider 및 combiner로서는 제작상의 편의를 감안해서 stripline directional coupler방식을 채택했으며 이것은 quadrature hybrid coupler로서 좋은 동작특성을 보였다. 직접 실용화를 감안해서 설계, 시작된 본 마이크로파 트랜지스터 증폭기는 측정결과 RF출력 14watt, 이득 14dB, 편파수대역폭 180MHz, 효율 40%의 우수한 종합특성을 얻었다.

  • This research presented the new zero-current switching pulse width modulation SEPP(Single Ended Push-Pull)high frequency inverter for solving the problem of the zero-current SEPP high frequency inverter circuit which is using widely in the practical application of an induction heating apparatus, the soft switching operation and power control are impossible when the lowest power supply in the zero-current switching pulse width modulation SEPP high frequency inverter. The inverter circuit which is attempted by on-off operation of a switch has the reduction effect of the power loss due to a soft switching and a high frequency switching. And it confirmed that the power regulation is possible continuously from 0.25[kW] until 2.84[kW] in the case the duty rate(D) changes from 0.08 to 0.3 under zero-current switching operating by a dissymmetry pulse width modulating control and the power conversion efficiency comes true the efficiency of 95[%]. Due to the result above, the ZCS PWM SEPP high frequency inverter will be effective as sources of an induction heating apparatus.

GaN 고출력 증폭기의 초소형 레이다 적용에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Application of High-Power GaN SSPA for Miniature Radar)

  • Trend on high-power GaN(Gallium Nitride) SSPA(Solid-State Power Amplifier) and its availability in miniature radar systems are presented. There are numerous studies on high-power GaN devices since they have some characteristics of high-breakdown voltage, high power density, and high-temperature stability. Recent scaled GaN technology makes it possible to apply it in SSPAs for W- and G-band applications, with increasing its maximum frequency. In addition, it leads to downsizing and power-efficiency improvement of SSPAs, which means that GaN SSPAs can be available in miniature radar systems. This study also shows radar performance and comparison in the case of using such SSPAs at three frequency bands of Ku, Ka, and W. Finally, we demonstrate prospects of scaled GaN SSPAs in future miniature radar systems.

  • The major roles of Power SCADA System are continuous monitoring of electrical equipments state, real-time data processing and dispatching. Especially, SCADA system demands fast response time in heavy load condition, high reliability, fault tolerance, expansion capacity for the future. According to developing computer system technology, SCADA system is changing system configuration from centralized processing system to distributed processing system. This paper describes operational benefits, problems and improvement (which is studying in theory) in the application of Open System Architecture SCADA which has been installed since 1994, Seoul regional control center in KEPCO.

질화갈륨 소자를 이용한 DPD용 고집적 팔렛트형 고출력증폭기 모듈 설계 (Design of a Highly Integrated Palette-type High Power Amplifier Module Using GaN Devices for DPD Application)

  • 본 논문에서는 고출력 및 고효율 특성을 지니는 질화갈륨(gallium nitride, GaN) 고출력 트랜지스터 소자를 이용하여 WiMAX 및 LTE(long term evolution) 시스템에 사용 가능한 60watt급 고출력증폭기 모듈을 팔렛트(palette) 타입으로 개발한 결과에 대하여 기술한다. 높은 이득을 얻기 위한 라인업(lineup) 구성을 위해 저전력이면서 고이득을 지니는 전치증폭단, 8watt급의 GaN 구동증폭단, 그리고 30watt급 GaN 소자 2개를 도허티(doherty) 구조로 구성한 60watt 고출력증폭단을 사용하였으며, 이로부터 2.5~2.68GHz에서 61.4dB의 이득과 ${\pm}$0.075dB의 우수한 이득 평탄도를 얻었다. 특히 구동단과 고출력증폭단은 고효율 및 고출력 특성의 GaN 소자를 사용하였고, 또한 추가적인 효율 개선을 위해 도허티 구조를 적용함으로써 보다 높은 효율을 가지도록 하였다. 현재 전 세계적으로 널리 사용되고 있는 WiMAX 신호를 사용하여 제작된 팔렛트 타입의 증폭기 모듈의 성능을 측정하였는데, RRH(remote radio head) 타입으로 구성된 사용 예에서 WiMAX 변조 신호 10watt 출력 기준으로 약 37~38%의 효율을 나타내었다. 제작된 증폭기 모듈을 디지털 전치왜곡기(digital predistorter, DPD)와 연동하여 시험한 결과 WiMAX 변조 신호 10watt 출력에서 ACLR은 46dBc 이상의 특성을 지닌다.

  • In this paper, one general approach is proposed for the design of power system that can be applicable for next generation LEO satellite application. The power system consists of solar panels, battery, and power control and distribution unit(PCDU). The PCDU contains solar array modules, battery interface modules, low-voltage power distribution modules, high-voltage distribution modules, heater power distribution modules, on-board computer interface modules, and internal DC/DC converter modules. The PCDU plays roles of protection of battery against overcharge by active control of solar array generated power, distribution of unregulated electrical power via controlled outlets to bus and instrument units, distribution of regulated electrical power to selected bus and instrument units, and provision of status monitoring and telecommand interface allowing the system and ground operate the power system, evaluate its performance and initiate appropriate countermeasures in case of abnormal conditions. We review the functional schemes of the main constitutes of the PCDU such as the battery interface module, the auxiliary supply module, solar array regulators with maximum power point tracking(MPPT) technology, heater power distribution modules, spacecraft unit power distribution modules, and instrument power distribution module.

A New High Efficiency ZVZCS Bidirectional DC/DC Converter for HEV 42V Power Systems

  • A new high efficiency zero-voltage and zero-current switching (ZVZCS) bidirectional DC/DC converter is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter consists of two symmetric half-bridge cells as the input and output stages. MOSFETs of input stage are turned-on in ZVS condition, and those of output stage are turned-off in ZCS condition. In addition, MOSFETs of input and output stages have low voltage stresses clamped to input and output voltage, respectively. Therefore, the proposed converter has high efficiency and high power density. The operational principles are analyzed and the advantages of the proposed converter are described. The 300W prototype of the proposed converter is implemented for 42V hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) application in order to verify the operational principles and advantages.
