  • The physical properties were analyzed for four gas diffusion layers, and gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) for the cathode of high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell were fabricated through bar coating with three binder to carbon (B/C) ratios. Among them, The GDE from JNT30-A6P showed a significant change in secondary pore volume at a B/C ratio of 0.31, which had the largest pore volume among all GDEs. In the polarization curve, JNT30-A6P GDE showed the best membrane electrode assembly (MEA) performance with a peak power density of 384 mW/cm2 at a a B/C ratio of 0.31. From the distribution of relaxation time analysis, the peak 1 corresponding to mass transfer resistance of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was significantly reduced in the JNT30-A6P GDE. This is the result that when the binder content decreased, the volume of the secondary pore increased, and the mass transfer resistance of ORR decreased, which played an essential role in the MEA performance.

  • Activated carbons (ACs) were prepared by activation of coal tar pitch (CTP) in the range of $700^{\circ}C-1000^{\circ}C$ for 1-4 h using potassium hydroxide (KOH) powder as the activation agent. The optimal activation conditions were determined to be a CTP/KOH ratio of 1:4, activation temperature of $900^{\circ}C$, and activation time of 3 h. The obtained ACs showed increased pore size distribution in the range of 1 to 2 nm and the highest specific capacitance of 122 F/g in a two-electrode system with an organic electrolyte, as measured by a charge-discharge method in the voltage range of 0-2.7 V. In order to improve the performance of the electric double-layer capacitor electrode, various mixtures of CTP and petroleum pitch (PP) were activated at the optimal activation conditions previously determined for CTP. Although the specific capacitance of AC electrodes prepared from CTP only and the mixtures of CTP and PP was not significantly different at a current density of 1 A/g, the AC electrodes from CTP and PP mixtures showed outstanding specific capacitance at higher current rates. In particular, CTP-PP61 (6:1 mixture) had the highest specific capacitance of 132 F/g, and the specific capacitance remained above 90% at a high current density of 3 A/g. It was found that the high specific capacitance could be attributed to the increased micro-pore volume of ACs with pore sizes from 1 to 2 nm, and the high power density could be attributed to the increased meso-pore volume.

  • The effect of porosity on the high-cycle fatigue properties of Al-Si-Mg casting aluminum alloys was investigated in this study. Microstructure examination, tensile and high-cycle fatigue test were conducted on both Al-Si-Mg casted (F) and heat-treated (T6) conditions. Porosity characteristics on the fracture surfaces of fatigue-tested samples were examined using SEM and image analysis. The microstructure observation results showed that eutectic Si particles were homogeneously dispersed in the matrix of the Al-Si-Mg casting alloys, but there were porosities formed as cast defects. The high-cycle fatigue results indicated that the fatigue strength of the 356-T6 alloy was higher than that of the 356-F alloys because of the significant reduction in volume fraction of pores by heat treatment. The SEM fractography results showed that porosity affected detrimental effect on the fatigue life: 80% of all tested samples fractured as a result of porosity which acted as the main crack initiation site. It was found that fatigue life decreased as the size of the surface pore increased. A comparison was made between surface pore and inner pore for its effect on the fatigue behavior. The results showed that the fatigue strength with the inner pores was higher than that of the surface pore.

  • In this study a new growing method of silicon nitride whiskers in the inside of large pores made intentionally during the sintering was conducted. Pore size, pore vol%, and nitrogen pressure were used as experimental variables. Silicon nitride whiskers were well grown in the inside of pores with low pore vol% range from 14 to 27 but not grown with high pore vol% such as 39 and 50. On the other hand, pore size and nitrogen pressure did not have any influence on the whisker growth. Therefore the most important factor to grow silicon nitride whisker in the inside of large pores during sintering was to make pores isolated or closed.

  • Activated carbons were prepared from Youngwall coal by steam activation in this study. The feasibility of the Youngwall coal to commercial activated carbon was examined. The variation of pore structures and the development of porosity in activated carbons were investigated by changing activation conditions in batch type apparatus. The values of BET surface area and adsorption capacity of iodine and methylene blue of the resulting activated carbons were obtained as high as 1,000$m^2$m^2$$/g, 900mg/g, 150$m\ell$/g, respectively. Youngwall activated carbon prepared in this study showed much higher pore volume in pore diameter over 10 than that of commercial reference activated carbon(Ningxia Taihua ZJ-15C) produced from China anthracite.

  • This study is to investigate changes of pore structure with different burn-off degree of steam activated carbons manufactured from domestic anthracite. The activated carbons were characterized by adsorption of nitrogen at 77 K. Steam activation substantially enhanced the porosity of the activated carbons. Burn-off increased linearly according to increasing activation time, and total pore volume and BET surface area increased with burn-off. Activation at $800^{\circ}C$ increased more micropore volume than that at $950^{\circ}C$. Activated carbons manufactured at high temperature had less microporosity than that at lower temperature, but had more developed macroporosity. The steam activation produced an enlargement of pore below $100{\AA}$ diameter in the activated carbons. Furthermore, the porosity in the $6{\sim}40{\AA}$ pore diameters range increased considerably with the degree of burn-off.

  • This paper is to investigate an effect of waste cooking oil(WCO) on the engineering properties and durability of high volume admixture concrete. Fly ash with 30% and blast furnace slag with 60% were incorporated in OPC to fabricate high volume admixture concrete with 0.5 of W/B. Emulsified refining cooking oil(ERCO) was made by mixing WCO and emulsifying agent to improve fluidity. ERCO was replaced by cement from 0.25 to 1.0%. As results, the increase of ERCO resulted in decrease of slump and air contents. For compressive strength, the use of ERCO led to decrease the compressive strength at 28 days, while it had similar strength or much higher strength than plain concrete at 180 days. Resistance to carbonation and chloride penetration was improved with the increase of ERCO contents due to decreased pore distribution by saponification between ERCO and concrete, while freeze-thaw resistance was degraded due to air loss.

  • This study examines both strength development and pore volume of high temperature curing mortar, using a blast-furnace slag powder (BFS). This study experiments with various pre-steaming period, differing curing temperature and the replacement of BFS. According to the results, the strength development of BFS mortar is stronger when higher curing temperature are used(as opposed to standard curing). Also, regardless of the curing method, pore volume decreases as the curing time increases. From these results we can identify the optimum conditions required pre-steaming period, differing curing temperature and the replacement to produce BFS mortar properties.

  • In this study, the hydrogen reduction behavior of ball-milled NiO nanopowder was investigated depending on the partial pressure of water vapor. The hydrogen reduction behavior was analyzed by thermogravimetry and hygrometry under heating to 873 K in hydrogen. In order to change the partial pressure of the water vapor, the dew point of hydrogen was controlled in the range of 248 K~293 K by passing high-purity hydrogen through a saturator that contained water. Interestingly, with the increase in the dew point of the hydrogen atmosphere, the first step of the hydrogen reduction process decreased and the second step gradually increased. After the first step, a pore volume analysis revealed that the pore size distribution in the condition with a higher water vapor pressure shifted to a larger size, whereas the opposite appearedat a lower pressure. Thus, it was found that the decrease in the pore volume during the chemical reaction controlled process at a dew point of 248 K caused a reduction in retardation in the diffusion controlled process.
