Effects of Strong Wind and Ozone on Localized Tree Decline in the Tanzawa Mountains of Japan

  • The numerical simulation of wind and ozone ($O_3$) transport in mountainous regions was performed with a computational fluid dynamics technique. A dry deposition model for $O_3$ was designed to estimate $O_3$ deposition in complex terrain, and the qualitative validity of the predicted $O_3$ concentration field was confirmed by comparison with observed data collected with passive samplers. The simulation revealed that wind velocity increases around ridge lines and peaks of mountains. The areas with strong wind corresponded well with the sites of tree decline at high altitudes, suggesting that it is an important factor in the localization of tree/forest decline. On the other hand, there is no direct relationship between forest decline and $O_3$ concentration. The $O_3$ concentration, however, tends to increase as wind velocity becomes higher, thus the $O_3$ concentration itself may be a potential secondary factor in the localized decline phenomena. While the diffusion flux of $O_3$ is not related to localized tree decline, the pattern of advection flux is related to those of high wind velocity and localized tree decline. These results suggest that strong wind with large advection flux of $O_3$ may play a key role in the promotion of tree/forest decline at high mountain ridges and peaks.

  • Recently, ozone is utilized in various fields and its needs are expanding. Therefore, so many ozone generation methods have been reported in the last year, its main purpose is to get the high ozone concentration and to improve the ozone yield one of them is a Co-axial cylinder-type ozonizer. In this paper, a new ozonizer, which is using radio-frequency power supply, is fabricated to investigate discharge characteristics and ozone generation characteristics in accordance wish variation of grip spacing of electrodes.

Effect of Ozone Treatment for Nakdong River Raw Water - II. Removal of VOCs and Algae in Raw Water by Conducting Batch Test of Ozonation Experiments - (낙동강 상수원수의 오존처리 효과 - II. 회분식 오존처리에 의한 휘발성유기화합물 및 조류제거 효과 -)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the pollutant removal efficiencies of the advanced drinking water treatment using ozonation process. For raw water, Nakdong River was used. By conducting batch test of ozonation, the following results were obtained. When ozone dosage of $5 mg/{\ell}$ was used, ozone transfer and utilization efficiencies of the ozonation were 94 to 92%, respectively. Removal efficiencies of single VOC compound or mixed VOC compounds in the raw water were 80% to 90% by the ozonation with $2 mg/{\ell}$ dosage and 10 minutes contact time. Removal efficiencies of ABS by the ozonation with $1 mg/{\ell}$, $3 mg/{\ell}$ dosage and 20 minutes contact time were 83% to 96%, respectively. Almost 67% of chlorophyll-a at the concentration of $38.4\mu\textrm{g}/{\ell}$ was removed by ozonation at ozone dosage of $1 mg/{\ell}$ for 20 min. Considering the efficiency of ozone utilization and water treatment, the most effective ozonation could be obtained with high ozone dosage and short contact time.

Estimation on the Contribution of VOCs and Nitric Oxides in Creating Photochemical Ozone (휘발성유기화합물과 질소산화물의 오존생성 기여도 평가에 관한 연구)

  • The fifty six components of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) were continuously measured by the hour to see the distributions their of its concentration and the ozone creating contribution of nitric oxides and VOCs in Gamjeon Odor and VOCs Monitoring Network from April to September, 2008. Aromatics occupied 51.3% of VOCs and paraffins, alkanes and olefins came in order. The monthly concentration of VOCs in Gamjeon was high in July and low in September. As for hourly concentration of ozone and nitric oxides, ozone started to increase since 10am having the highest in the daytime, and nitric oxides had the different trend from that of ozone, showing the lowest in the daytime. The photochemical ozone creating potentials(POCPs) of toluene, propane, m/p-xylene, ethylbenzene, and 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene were 30.6%, 10.2%, 9.4%, 7.4% and 5.2% respectively. These five components occupied 62.8% of total POCPs, which means they contributed to the ozone creation mainly. Related with the ozone creating contribution, the ratio of VOCs to NOx was generally under 6 occupied 72.0%, which came under the area coexisting the limit of VOCs. Therefore it is thought that the management of emission source of VOCs is very important for the reduction of ozone.

  • Even if smoke, fumes, mist or dust particles are removed by electrostatic precipitators (ESPs), the occurrence of ozone, which is harmful to human body, has to be severely restricted in the indoor environments of hospitals, offices, and workshops. Therefore, the two-stage ESP generating positive corona at the ionizer is typically used because it creates less ozone than the two-stage ESP generating negative corona at the ionizer. In order to predict the collection performance and the optimal design of the two-stage ESP applied to positive high-voltage, particle concentration is experimentally investigated in this paper. In addition, particle motion within the collector section is also numerically analyzed. The positive corona discharge current of the ionizer is found to be affected by the applied voltage in the collector section but less so by the particle concentration. Particle concentration shows a minimum near the high voltage electrode of the collector section. The minimum value of the collection efficiency is almost proportional to gas velocity. When the collector length decreases, the minimum value of the collection efficiency increases. Charged particles entering the collector region are linearly deflected towards the grounded plate by an electric field. From the above experimental and numerical results, two empirical equations on the concentration ratio and the collection efficiency are derived, and are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Study of a hybrid process combining ozonation and ceramic membrane for drinking water treatment (I) : manganese removal (정수처리를 위한 전오존-세라믹 막여과 조합공정에 관한 연구(I) : 망간 제거 중심)

  • In this research, the $3.6m^3/day$ scale pilot plant consisting preozonation, coagulation, flocculation, and ceramic membrane processes was operated for long term period to evaluate the validity of ceramic membrane filtration process for treating lake water containing high concentration manganese. The higher concentration of dissolved manganese($Mn^{2+}$) was effectively oxidized to the bigger insoluble colloidal manganese ($MnO^2$) by 1~2 mg/L ozone. The colloidal manganese reacted with coagulant (poly aluminium chloride, PAC) and then formed the big floc. Ceramic membrane rejected effectively manganese floc during membrane filtration. Dissolved organic carbon(DOC) removal was dependent upon $Mn^{2+}$ concentration. While average $Mn^{2+}$ concentration was 0.43 and 0.85 mg/L in raw water, DOC removal rate in preozonation was 26.5 and 13.5%, respectively. The decrease rate of membrane permeability was faster without preozonation than with preozonation while membrane fouling decreased with NOM oxidation by ozone. In conclusion, raw water containing high concentration of manganese can be effectively treated in preozonation-coagulation-ceramic membrane filtration system.

A Study on Allocation of Air Pollution Monitoring Network by Spatial Distribution Analysis of Ozone and Nitrogen Dioxide Concentrations in Busan (부산지역 오존 및 이산화질소 농도의 공간분포해석에 따른 대기오염측정망 배치연구)

  • In this study, methodologies for the rational organization of air pollution monitoring network were examined by understanding the characteristics of temporal and spatial distribution of secondary air pollution, whose significance would increase hereafter. The data on $O_3$ and $NO_2$ concentrations during high ozone period in 1998~1999 recorded at the nine air pollution monitoring station in Busan were analysed using principal component analysis (PCA) and cumulative semivariogram. It was found that the ozone concentration was deeply associated with the daily emission characteristics or the $O_3$ precusors, and nitrogen dioxide concentration largely depends on the emission strength of regional sources. According to the spatial distribution analysis of ozone and nitrogen dioxide in Busan using cumulative semivariograms, the number of monitoring stations for the secondary air pollution can be reduced in east-west direction, but reinforced in north-south direction to explain the spacial variability. More scientific and rational relocation of air pollution monitoring network in Busan would be needed to investigate pollution status accurately and to plan and implement the pollution reduction policies effectively.

The estimation of Hydroxyl radical generation rate in Ozonation (오존산화공정에서 수산화라디칼(OH.)의 생성속도 측정)

  • During ozonation process, the hydroxyl radical generation rates were measured under different experimental conditions (ozone feed rate, nitrobenzene concentration, hydroxyl radical scavenger, pH, HO$_2$O$_2$/O$_3$ etc.) Nitrobenzene could be decomposed by hydroxyl radical rather than ozone only and nitrobenzene decomposition rate was expressed with functions of ozone and nitrobenzene concentration. The rate was decreased as the hydroxyl radical scavenger concentration was increased, and all results were followed pseudo first-order reaction. Using a competitive method, hydroxyl radical generation rate was measured with probe compound and scavenger. It was proportional to ozone concentration, and 0.24mo1 of hydroxyl radical was produced with 1mol of ozone. Under different pH conditions, hydroxyl radical generation rates were measured (pH 10.2 (0.91Ms$^{-1}$ ) > pH 7.3 (0.72Ms$^{-1}$ ) > pH 5.6 (0.67Ms$^{-1}$ ) > pH 3.4 (0.63Ms$^{-1}$ )) showing higher generation rate at high pH values. Addition of hydrogen peroxide promoted the generation rate of hydroxyl radical. Considering the results of pH experiments and addition of hydrogen peroxide experiments, the hydroxyl radical generation rate was 1.6 times higher in hydrogen peroxide solution than in high pH solution, indicating addition of hydrogen peroxide is better promoter to produce the hydroxyl radical in ozonation. These results could be applied to AOPs to remediate the contaminated wastewater and groundwater.

  • In this paper, high concentration yield multi-discharge type ozonizer (MDO) of new discharge type using superposed silent discharge was designed and manufactured, MDO can be consisted with 3 kind of multi discharge type ozonizer (MDO) in accordance with power supply method that supplying power, which has 180[$^{\circ}$] phase difference, to 3 electrodes and double gap. At the moment, discharge characteristics and ozone generation characteristics of each MDO were investigated in accordance with quantity of supplied gas, the number of MDO, and the shapes of each MDO. In result, ozone generation characteristics of 17185[ppm] and 783[g/kWh] were obtained, and when ozone of 17185 [ppm] was in contact with dyeing water waste, decolorization characteristics was excellent, so it confirmed that MDO could be used as water environment improvement facility.

A Study on Discharge Characteristics in Flowing Gas at High Voltage Nozzle (고전압(高電壓) Nozzle 에서 유출(流出)하는 기체(氣體)의 방전특성(放電特性)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • This paper describes ozone concentration and discharge characteristics in flowing $O_2$ with variation of Re at high voltage nozzle(HVN). HVN type ozonizer is equipped with ten nozzle. The important conclusions obtained from this paper are as follows. For constant pulse width(Pw) and pulse frequency(Pf) the more Re increases, the higher corona onset voltage(Vc) rise. Vc is inversely proportional to Pw and Pf. Ozone concentration($O_{3con}$) increases with less Re for constant Pw and Pf. $O_{3con}$ increases with less Pw. $O_{3con}$ is proportional to Pf.
