Analysis of Time Series Models for Ozone Concentrations at the Uijeongbu City in Korea

  • The ozone data is one of the important environmental data for measurement of the atmospheric condition of the country. In this article, the Autoregressive Error (ARE) model have been considered for analyzing the ozone data at the northern part of the Gyeonggi-Do, Uijeongbu monitoring site in Korea. The result showed that both overall and monthly ARE models are suited for describing the ozone concentration. In the ARE model, seven meteorological variables and four pollution variables are used as the as the explanatory variables for the ozone data set. The seven meteorological variables are daily maximum temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, rainfall, dew point temperature, steam pressure, and amount of cloud. The four air pollution explanatory variables are Sulfur dioxide(SO2), Nitrogen dioxide(NO2), Cobalt(CO), and Promethium 10(PM10). Also, the high level ozone data (over 80ppb) have been analyzed four ARE models, General ARE, HL ARE, PM10 add ARE, Temperature add ARE model. The result shows that the General ARE, HL ARE, and PM10 add ARE models are suited for describing the high level of ozone data.

A New Small Size Digital Optical Ozone Monitor Using CCD Array as a UV Detector (UV 감지기로서 CCD어레이를 사용한 소형 디지털 광 오존모니터)

  • Ozone monitor based on UV techniques has been widely used due to their signal stability. The high concentration ozone monitor for real time ozone monitoring from ozone generator was composed of a low pressure mercury lamp as UV source and a photo multiplier tube as UV detector. The structure could be very useful for low price high concentration ozone monitor and showed good linearity to ozone in the concentration range between 0.05 and 2wt%. For accurate ambient ozone monitoring, the system composed of a high power pulsed xenon lamp as UV source, an optical spectrometer with a high sensitivity linear CCD array as UV detector. The optical signal form the CCD array was converted to digital signal, and the digital signal was displayed on screen using PC interface. The developed system showed good linearity and sensitivity in relatively low measuring range between 10ppm and 10,000ppm, and showed some feasibility of hish resolution ozone monitor using CCD array as a photodetecor.

  • The ozone forecasting systems have many problems because the mechanism of the ozone concentration is highly complex, nonlinear, and nonstationary. Also, the results of prediction are not a good performance so far, especially in the high-level ozone concentration. This paper describes the modeling method of the ozone prediction system using neuro-fuzzy approaches and fuzzy clustering. The dynamic polynomial neural network (DPNN) based upon a typical algorithm of GMDH (group method of data handling) is a useful method for data analysis, identification of nonlinear complex system, and prediction of a dynamical system.

Characteristics of Surface and Synoptic Meteorology During High-Ozone Episodes in the Greater Seoul Area (서울.수도권 지역 고농도 오존 사례의 지상 및 종관 기상 특성)

  • Meteorological characteristics of three high-ozone episodes in the Greater Seoul Area, selected on the basis of morning-average wind direction and speed for the 1990~1997 period, were investigated. Three high-ozone episodes thus selected were seven days of July 3~9, 1992, nine days of July 21~29, 1994, and three days of August 22~24, 1994. Along with surface meteorological data from the Seoul Weather Station, surface and 850-hPa wind fields over the Northest Asia around the Korean Peninsula were used for the analysis. In the July 1992 episode, westerly winds were most frequent as a result of the influence of a high-pressure system in the west behind the trough. In contrast, in the July 1994 episode, easterly winds were most frequent due to the effect of a typhoon moving north from the south of Japan. Despite different prevailing wind directions in the two episodes, the peak ozone concentration of each episode always occurred when a sea-land breeze developed in association with weak synoptic forcing. The August 1994 episode, selected as being representative of calm conditions, was another typical example in which peak ozone concentration rose to 322 ppb under the well-developed sea-land breeze. All three high-ozone episodes were terminated by precipitation, and subsequent rises in ozone concentrations were also suppressed by a series of precipitation afterwards. In particular, two heavy rainfalls were the main reason why the August 1994 episode, with the highest and second-highest ozone concentrations during the 1990~1997 period, lasted for only a few days.

Decoloring Effect of Viscose Rayon by Using Vapor Type Ozone Processing (오존 기상처리방법에 의한 비스코스 레이온의 탈색효과)

  • We studied on the decoloring effect of viscose rayon by vapor type ozone processing using ozone's strong oxidation. When ozone is generated, it becomes high concentration in vapor state, but in the insolving process with water, there are a lot of lose of ozone. As a result, a study using ozone in vapor-high concentration state is needed. So, in this paper, vapor type ozone processing is used unlike previous ozone treatment method-an aqueous solution method-to get a good effect from shortening the processing time. When vapor type ozone processing was directly treated to fabrics, high concentration ozone was generated then in a short time oxidized a dye existed in fabrics and finally decolored it. As vapor type ozone did not directly response to an organic dye, viscose rayon's decolorization was to be studied by changing pick up ratio(60%, 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%) using water as a medium. When pick up ratio of water was 40%, fabric's whiteness was improved but tensile strength and elongation were reduced. So 60 minutes was assumed as the most adjust time to minimize the reduction of fabric's tensile strength and elongation moreover of maximize the improvement of whiteness.

A Simulation of High Ozone Episode in Downwind Area of Seoul Metropolitan Using CMAQ Model (CMAQ을 이용한 수도권 풍하지역의 고농도 오존 현상 모사)

  • Recently, high ozone episode occurred frequently in Korea. Moreover ozone episode occurred not only in the city but also in background area where local anthropogenic sources are not important. It analyzed frequency exceeding 100ppb ozone at air quality monitoring stations in Seoul and rural area during 1995-2004. This paper reports on the use of the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modelling system to predict hourly ozone levels. Domain resolutions of 30km, 10km, 3.333km (innermost) have been employed for this study. Summer periods in June 2004 have been simulated and the predicted results have been compared to data for metropolitan and rural air quality monitoring stations. The model performance has been evaluated with measured data through a range of statistical measures. Although, the CMAQ model reproduces the ozone temporal spatial trends it was not able to simulate the peak magnitudes consistently.

  • Ozone is a strong and useful oxidizing gas for the fabrication of oxide thin films. In order to obtain high quality oxide thin films, higher ozone concentration is necessary. In this paper an ozone condensation system was evaluated from the viewpoint of an ozone supplier for oxide thin film growth. Crone was condensed by an adsorption method and the ozone concentration reached 8.5 mol% in 2.5 h after the beginning of the ozone condensation process, indicating high effectiveness of the condensation process. Ozone was continuously desorbed from the silica gel by the negative pressure. We found the decomposition in the ozone concentration negligible if the condensed ozone is transferred from the ozone condensation system to the film growth chamber within a few minutes.

  • Objectives : This study was designed to evaluate the pesticide residue of herb medicine through high density ozone water cleaning system. Materials and Methods : We purchased ginseng(Panax ginseng) on market and sprayed pesticides (Diazinon) on ginseng. We analyzed pesticide residue according to washing methods(untreated, ozone water cleaning, ultrasonic cleaning, Water cleaning). As a result of each washing methods, in ozone water cleaning method pesticide residue was much less remained than in Ultrasonic Cleaning method and water cleaning method. Conclusions : High density ozone water cleaning is the best method for removing pesticides of herbal medicine.

The Beating Properties of High Yield Pulp Treated with Ozone(II) (오존처리 고수율 펄프의 고해 특성(II) -고해 후 발생된 미세섬유의 리그닌 분포-)

  • This research was conducted to investigate the morphological characteristics of fine fibers produced during beating process of high yield pulp treated with ozone and the distribution of lignin in the produced fine fibers. Thermomechanical(TMP) pulp and chemithermomechanical(CTMP) pulp of spruce and CTMP of white birch were beaten to reach 200$m\ell$ CSF, and then the fine fibers were observed using ultraviolet microscope. The fine fibers produced from TMP and CTMP of spruce using treated with ozone for 15 minutes were fragments of fiber surfaces or cell corners, and most of them contained lignin. However, lignin was not observed in the fibers after 15 minutes of ozone treatment. The fine fibers produced from CTMP of white birch were broken pieces or fragments of fiber surfaces or cell corners. The lignin was observed in the fibers until 5min of ozone treatment but no lignin was observed after 5 minutes of ozone treatment. Different morphological characteristics of TMP and CTMP explained both the different morphological characteristics and the distribution of lignin observed in the fine fibers produced from the beating process of TMP and CTMP treated with ozone.

Meteorological Characteristics of High-Ozone Episode Days in Daegu, Korea (대구시의 고농도 오존 발생 일에 나타나는 기상학적 특성)

  • This study analyzes the surface ozone and meteorological data in Daegu for a period from 1997 to 1999. It also investigates the meteorological characteristics of high ozone episodes. For this study the high ozone episode has been defined as a daily maximum ozone concentration higher than 100ppb in at least one station among six air quality monitoring stations in Daegu, Korea. The frequency of episodes is 13 days. The frequency is the highest in May and September. The average value of daily maximum ozone concentration is 81.6ppb, and 8-hour average ozone concentration is 58.6ppb for the high episodes. This shows that ozone pollution is continuous and wide-ranging in Daegu. The daily maximum ozone concentration is positively correlated to solar radiation and daily maximum temperature, but negatively correlated to relative humidity, wind speed and cloud amount. The maximal correlation coefficient to solar radiation is 0.45. The differences between high ozone episode day's daily mean meteorological value and monthly mean value are +1.58hPa for sea level pressure, +3.45${\circ}$C for maximum temperature, -5.69% for relative humidity, -0.46ms$^{-1}$ for wind speed, -1.79 for cloud amount, and +3.97MJm$^{-2}$ for solar radiation, respectively. This shows that strong solar radiation, low wind speed and no precipitation between 0700${\sim}$1100LST are favorite conditions for high ozone episodes. It is related to the morning stagnant condition.
