Misfiring is often observed during the high temperature quality assurance test of plasma display panel. This limits the productivity of PDP industry. In this paper, experimental observations on the misfiring at high panel temperature have been performed through time dependent discharge light output and static margin measurement. For the high temperature condition, firing voltage increment is found in both surface and facing discharges. This in turn increases time lag in address discharge, and results in increment of misfiring probability. In order to reduce this kind of misfiring, a new method that applies automatically different slope of ramp erasing pulse on the common electrode according to temperature variation is proposed. The experimental results show that controlling the slope of ramp erasing pulse is quite effective for compensating temperature-dependent variation of reset and address discharge.

The helmholtz resonator with the perforated neck has demerits that the absorption performance is not so outstanding in an anti-resonance frequency and high frequency bandwidth. In order to overcome these problems, in the paper, a resonator combined with porous material is proposed. The absorption performances of resonators are measured by two-microphone method and estimated by transfer matrix method. The experimentally measured values of normal absorption coefficients agree well with the corresponding values from the transfer matrix method. Because of the porous material, it is shown that the absorption performance have been significantly improved in the anti-resonance frequency and high frequency bandwidth.

A study on the interference effects of overlapping tandem rotors in forward flight is conducted using the time-marching free-wake panel method which adopts field velocity boundary integral formulation. The conventional boundary integral formulation is numerically unstable for the cases when the blade and the wake are in close proximity to each other. In order to avoid this problem, this study applies the field velocity method and modifies the boundary integration formulation. The improved method is used for the parametric study on the advance ratio and the distance between the rotors. These are the parameters that most affect the interference of the tandem rotor in forward flight. Comparison of the aerodynamic performance shows that the horizontal distance between the rotors negligibly influences the overlap-induced power factor for high advance ratio. In addition, it shows that the overlap-induced power factor is inversely proportional to the squared vertical distance between the rotors, and that the overlap-induced power factor increases to a certain extent and decrease back as the advance ratio increases.

The vehicle design engineers have studied the method of applying damping materials to the vehicle bodies by computer simulations and experimental methods in order to improve the vibration and noise characteristics of the vehicles. The unconstrained layer damping, being concerned with this study, has two layers(base layer and damping layer) and proyides vibration control of the base layer through extensional damping. Generally this kind of surface damping method is effectively used in reducing structural vibration at frequencies beyond 150Hz. The most important thing is how to apply damping treatment with respect to location and size of the damping material. To solve these problems, the current experimental methods have technical limits which are cumbersome, time consuming, and expensive. This Paper proposes a method based on finite element method and it employes averaged ESE(element strain energy) percent of total of dash panel assembly for 1/1 octave band frequency range by MSC/NASTRAN. The regions of high ESE percent of total are selected as proposed location of damping treatment. The effect of damping treatment is analyzed by comparing the frequency response function of the SPCC bare Panel and the damping treated panels.

A low order panel method based on the perturbation potential is applied for prediction of performance of blown-flap rudders. In order to improve the solution behavior at the large angle of attacks, the geometry of the trailing wake sheet is computed by aligning freely with the local flow. The effect of the wake sheet roll-up is also included with use of a high order panel method. The flow in the gap between the main component and the flap of the rudder is modeled as Couette flow. The effects of the gap and the flow jet are included in application of a kinematic and a dynamic boundary condition on the inlet and the outlet of the gap as well as on the flap and the wake. The results with the present method are compared with existing experimental data. The method is shown to be capable of determining accurately the flow characteristics even for large flap angles.

The Blu-ray disc as a next generation high density optical medium uses an objective lens of high numerical aperture(NA 0.85) and blue laser in order to increase the recording density. The double layer is also useful for doubling the density. The spherical aberration of Blu-ray disc is very sensitive to the thickness of the disk because of high numerical aperture. This paper suggests a method to compensate the spherical aberration caused by the change of disk thickness, by using the Liquid Crystal lens instead of the Liquid Crystal panel. It was possible to develop both the LC panel generating the optical phase difference and LC lens changing the optical power. In this paper, we analyzed the aberration performance and a position sensitivity of the two type LC elements when the samples deviate from the optical axis of the objective lens. The results of applying this analysis show that the LC lenses rather than the LC panels have a significant assembling tolerance. The theoretical characteristics of the two elements are calculated and compared with the measurement data.
As one way of cost innovation and weight saving of the automobile, the one-piece typed lower control arm was developed for the purpose of replacing the box typed lower control arm. In order to overcome less buckling strength of the one-piece typed lower control arm, the design parameters such as the high strength steel grade, the thickness and the shape of main panel were optimized based on Taguchi method.

Thermal protection system structures such as double-panel structures are used on the skin of the fuselage and wings to prevent the transfer of high heat into the interior of an high supersonic/hypersonic aircraft. The thin-walled double-panel skin can be exposed to acoustic loads by high power engine noise and jet flow noise, which can cause sonic fatigue damage. In order to predict the fatigue life of the skin, the octave bandwidth SPL should be calculated as narrow bandwidth PSD or acoustic load history using interpolation method. In this paper, a method of converting the octave bandwidth SPL acoustic load into a narrow bandwidth PSD and reconstructed acoustic load history was investigated. The octave bandwidth SPL was converted to the narrow bandwidth PSD using various interpolation methods such as flat, log and linear scale, and the probabilistic characteristics and fatigue damage results were compared. It was found that average error of fatigue damage index by the log scale interpolation method was relatively small among three methods.
Nonlinear low velocity impact response of sandwich beam with laminated composite face sheets and soft core is studied based on Extended High Order Sandwich Panel Theory (EHSAPT). The face sheets follow the Third order shear deformation beam theory (TSDT) that has hitherto not reported in conventional EHSAPT. Besides, the two dimensional elasticity is used for the core. The nonlinear Von Karman type relations for strains of face sheets and the core are adopted. Contact force between the impactor and the beam is obtained using the modified Hertz law. The field equations are derived via the Ritz based applied to the total energy of the system. The solution is obtained in the time domain by implementing the well-known Runge-Kutta method. The effects of boundary conditions, core-to-face sheet thickness ratio, initial velocity of the impactor, the impactor mass and position of the impactor are studied in detail. It is found that each of these parameters have significant effect on the impact characteristics which should be considered. Finally, some low velocity impact tests have been carried out by Drop Hammer Testing Machine. The contact force histories predicted by EHSAPT are in good agreement with that obtained by experimental results.
