  • Electroglottography (EGG) is a technique used to register laryngeal behavior indirectly by a measuring the change in electrical impedance across the throat during speaking. However, EGG waveform is affected by laryngeal muscles which fluctuate the vocal cords, and which result in baseline wander. It is required to reduce baseline wander in EGG waveform, because EGG waveform is used for input signal of nonlinear speech synthesizer in next chapter. In vocal cords, the abduction-adduction of glottis is mainly controlled by the posterior cricoarytenoid (abductor) and interarytenoid (adductor) muscles respectively. Empirical Mode Decomposition method was adopted in cancellation of EGG waveform baseline wandering, and showd better performance than that of high pass filter with 500 order.

  • The resistive V dipole (RVD) is a V antenna with both arms loaded with the continuous Wu-King resistive profile. The RVD has many advantages for surface and subsurface probing, such as the ability to radiate a short pulse in a desired direction. The radiated pulse is simply related to the input pulse, e.g., derivative. In addition, it mostly eliminates the multiple reflections between the surface of the ground and the antenna because of its low radar cross section. The drawbacks of the RVD include the high input impedance and the difficulty in implementation. This paper presents ways to improve the accuracy and easiness of the implementation and to improve the low-frequency performance while maintaining the characteristics of the V antenna that are good for probing applications. The implemented antenna is used to form a bistatic radar to scan targets underground, and the result is imaged.

  • To improve the output power of a photomixer as a THz source, we propose a four-leaf clover-shaped antenna structure which is composed of a highly resonant radiation element and a stable DC feed element. The resonance characteristics of the proposed structure were investigated on a half-infinite substrate first as a simplified radiation environment in order to save the computation time. Based on the antenna characteristics on a half-infinite substrate, the antenna structure was designed to have a maximum total efficiency and a maximum directivity on an extended hemispherical lens. In comparison with a full-wavelength dipole, an input resistance of this structure increased six fold and this characteristic significantly improved the mismatch efficiency between a photomixer and an antenna. THz output power from this structure is expected to increase by 2.7 times as compared to a full-wavelength dipole case.

  • Generally, the Wheeler cap method is used to measure the efficiency of small antennas. This method often gives an unreliable efficiency when the antenna has a complicated operating principle. However, if the high-order circuit model which more closely represents the input impedance of the antenna is used in Wheeler cap method, then more accurate efficiency can be achieved. In this paper, we propose a novel method that can build the high-order circuit model using transformer circuits with the genetic algorithm(GA). To efficiently reduce the searching space in the GA and improve the convergence of the GA process, we suggest a novel scheme that finds appropriate initial values. Finally we verify the proposed method by measuring the efficiency of some passive RFID tag antennas.

  • This paper presents a high-efficiency digital class-D audio amplifier using a composite interpolation filter for portable audio devices. The proposed audio amplifier is composed of an interpolation filter, a delta-sigma modulator, and a class-D output stage. To reduce power consumption, the designed interpolation filter has an optimized composite structure that uses a direct-form symmetric and Lagrange FIR filters. Compared to the filters with homogeneous structures, the hardware cost and complexity are reduced by about half by the optimization. The coefficients of the digital delta-sigma modulator are also optimized for low power consumption. The class-D output stage has gate driver circuits to reduce shoot-through current. The implemented class-D audio amplifier exhibited a high efficiency of 87.8 % with an output power of 57 mW at a load impedance of $16{\Omega}$ and a power supply voltage of 1.8 V. An outstanding signal-to-noise ratio of 90 dB and a total harmonic distortion plus noise of 0.03 % are achieved for a single-tone input signal with a frequency of 1 kHz.

  • In this paper, a microstrip patch sensor antenna (MPSA) for detecting the concentration of an ethanol-water solution in a microliter volume is proposed. A rectangular slot was added at the radiating edge of the patch to increase the sensitivity to the relative permittivity change. To improve a low input resistance caused by placing an ethanol-water solution, which is a polar liquid with high dielectric constant and high loss tangent, on the patch, a quarter-wave impedance transformer was added between the 50-ohm feedline and the patch, and the MPSA was fabricated on a 0.76 mm-thick RF-35 substrate. A cylindrical container was made of acryl, and 15 microliters of the ethanol-water solution was tested from 0% to 100% of ethanol concentration at 20% intervals. Experiment results show that the resonant frequency increased from 1.947 GHz to 2.509 GHz when the ethanol concentration of the ethanol-water solution was increased from 0% to 100%, demonstrating the performance as a concentration detecting sensor.

  • A method of measuring the current and voltage is suggested in the circuit of cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) which are driven at a high frequency of $50{\sim}100\;kHz$ and a high voltage of several kV. It is difficult to measure the current and voltage in the lamp circuit, because the impedance of the probe at high voltage side causes the leakage current and the variation of luminance. According to the analysis of equivalence circuit with the probe impedance and leakage current, the proper measuring method is to adjust the input DC voltage and to keep the specific luminance when the probe is installed at a high voltage circuit. The lamp current is detected with a current probe or a high frequency current meter at the ground side and the voltage is measured with a high voltage probe at the high voltage side of lamp. The lamp voltage($V_C$) is measured between the ballast capacitor and the lamp electrode, and the output voltage($V_I$) of inverter is measured between inverter output and ballast capacitor. As the phases of lamp voltage($V_C$) and current ($I_G$) are nearly the same values, the real power of lamp is the product of the lamp voltage($V_C$) by the lamp current($I_G$). The measured value of the phase difference between inverter output voltage($V_I$) and lamp current($I_G$) is appreciably deviated from the calculated value at $cos{\theta}=V_C/V_I$.

  • A plastic bolt shape UHF RFID tag has been developed for a live tree. The UHF tag is designed and installed into the head part of the bolt, inserted into a tree for management of tree. If the tag antenna is installed near the high dielectric constant material, the impedance of the tag antenna will be changed, and the tag does not work. Therefore, the dielectric constants of wood and plastic bolt are considered for tag antenna design. The input reflection coefficient characteristics and the reading range patterns are measured and compared. This UHF RFID tag can be applied into a live tree, and the status and location of tree can be controlled with the RFID tag. This developed UHF tag can be applied to any applications and objects using a bolt.

  • Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) can produce power from ambient mechanical sources and have strong points of high output performance, light weight, low cost, and easy manufacturing process. It is expected that TENG can be utilized in the fields of wireless electronics and self-powered devices in the world which pays attention to healthcare and the IoT. In this work, we focus on scavenging ambient rotational energy by using a durably designed TENG. In previous studies regarding harvesting rotation mode energy, the devices were based on sliding mechanism and durability was not considered as a major issue. However friction by rotation causes reliability problems due to wear and tear. Therefore, in this study, we convert rotary motion to linear motion utilizing a cam by which we can then utilize contact-mode TENG and improve device reliability. In order to increase output performance, bumper springs were used below the TENG and the optimum value for the bumper spring constant was analyzed theoretically. Furthermore, the inserting a soft substrate was proposed and its effect on high output was determined to be due to an increase in the contact area. By increasing the number of cam noses, the output frequency was shown to increase linearly. For the purpose of maximum power transfer, the input impedance of the device was determined. Finally, to demonstrate the use of the C-TENG as a direct power source, it was installed on a commercial bicycle wheel and connected to 180 LEDs. In conclusion we present a rotational motion TENG energy scavenger system designed for enhanced durability and optimized output by appropriate choice of spring constants and substrate.

  • A modified transmission line model is proposed for input impedance analysis of a square microstip antenna with single-circularly-polarized. Alog-periodic arrangement with microstrip antenna (LPMA) which consists of 3 resonant element ($3\times1$) is designed for broadband operation ranging from 11.2 GHz to 12.4 GHz, based on this pro- posed model from transmission line model. Aplanar array ($3\times4$array), in which 4sets of the above LPMA are in the same plane, is fabricated for high gain X-band satellite communication antennas. The optimum spacing between each LPMA is determined using computer simulation for the minimum bariation of far field pattern and null. This $3\times4$array has a measured values of gain greater than 8dBi, VSWR les then 2.3, and bandwidth greater than 7% respectively.
