Effects of the mosture and thermal annealing on CLBO crystal

  • The effects of the moisture and thermal annealing on CLBO crystal have been investigated. CLBO has hydrated at high humidity condition, resulting in 5B$_2$O$_3$$.$Cs$_2$O$.$8H$_2$O. The surface hydration seems to induce the cracking and the refractive index change in CLBO. The thermal annealing is effective to restore the changed index.

  • Hard disk drives operate in various environmental conditions. Thus, it is necessary to assess the reliability of the head/disk interface under these conditions. In this work, stiction and acoustic emission signals were investigated under different temperature, humidity, and ambient pressure conditions. Also, track average amplitude was observed for disk failure in N$_2$environment. It is shown that failure of the head/disk interface occurs more readily at high temperature and low ambient pressure conditions.

  • Among the common textile fibers, wool has excellent wrinkle recovery. However, absorbed moisture plasticizes the structure and increases the rate of stress relaxation during wear deformation. Therefore, the wrinkle recovery of wool deteriorates under very high-humidity conditions and is of particular concern in men's lightweight suits, where the trend is toward wool fabrics of lightweight and bright color in which the wrinkles are emphasized.   • Water content and strong acidity are estimated for ambient particles measured between Fall, 1991 and Summer, 1992 in Seoul using a gas/aerosol equilibrium model, called SCAPE. Particle water content and formation of solid species are closely related to ambient relative humidity and ionic concentrations. Generally, water content of particles is high during the night and summer. Estimated particle strong acidity level of Seoul is similar to that of Los Angeles, U.S.A. Acidity of wet and dry depositions in Seoul is discussed.

  • Indoor air quality(IAQ) in museum is very important for protection of cultural properties. In our study, we measured air pollutants($NO_x, NH_3, SO_2, O_3$, CO, $CO_2$, TSP), temperature and humidity to evaluate IAQ of national central museum. Indoor carbon dioxide and TSP concentrations were higher than outdoor concentrations. Temperature, huinidity and TSP had large deviation depending on air conditioning operates or not. Indoor gas phase pollutants except $CO_2$ were lower than outdoor concentrations, but $SO_2$ concentration was high in storage. $CO_2$ and TSP were influenced by the number of spectators.

  • Electrical conduction in soils depends on the grain site, compactness, humidity and etc. When a high current is injected into the soil, and the breakdown phenomenon occurs and electrical behaviors in the vicinity of grounding electrodes may be changed. In the present work, electrical behaviors in the vicinity of ground rod due to the injection of impulse current were investigated. Spark-over phenomena at the tip of ground rod depend on the grain size and kinds of soils.

  • High quality of turbine babbit bearing has to be maintained for smooth operation of power plants. So in the research center of the Korea Electric Power Company, Ultrasonic testing has been peformed on the spare part of babbit bearing during past ten years. Since separation between babbit bearing and base metal was seen for most of the bearings in stock, investigation has begun in order to see the effect on temperature and humidity variation of the separation, and thus searching for the optimum storage method.

  • The strength capacity properties of concrete are much influenced by water content which has a significant effect on concrete spalling, especially, in high temperature areas. Therefore, the properties of the material's shall be closely examined first by measuring the water content in each material in order to analyze Concrete Fire Characteristics, and a reliable measuring method shall be presented in order to derive the following influence. The method used to measure the water content within concrete is mainly divided into 4 types; ASTM method, Nuclear Magnetic method, Ultrasonic measurement method, Radio Wave method, etc. It is essential to use a reliable measuring method for each experiment. In this experiment, we measured the water content and humidity of concrete by two methods; Relative/Absolute humidity method using VISALA HM44 measuring equipment which is easily measurable compared with other methods regardless of the shape of the experimental model, and a water content measuring experiment using ASTM C 566. If the aggregates are under the condition that their surface is dry but in saturation, there is no change of water content according to concrete curing methods. However if the aggregates are absolutely dry, the water content is significantly changed according to concrete curing methods.
