Brittle materials such as ceramics and glasses show fragile fracture due to the low toughness and the crack sensitivity. When brittle materials are subjected to impact loading by small spheres, high contact pressure occurs to the surface of the specimen. Local damage is subsequently generated in the specimen. This local damage is a dangerous factor which gives rise to the final fracture of structures. In this research, impact damage of soda-lime glass plates by small spheres was evaluated by considering the effects of impact directions of indenter, pressure condition of specimen and residual strength after impact loading.

The critical strain energy release rate and the failure mechanisms of glass-carbon epoxy resin hybrid composites are investigated in the temperature range of the ambient temperature to 8$0^{\circ}C$. The direction of laminates and the volume fraction are [(+45, -45, 0, 0) sub(2) ] sub(s), 50%, respectively. The major failure mechanisms of these composites are studied using the scanning electron microscope for the fracture surface. Results are summarized as follows: 1) The critical strain energy release rate shows a maximum at ambient temperature and it tends to decrease as temperature goes up. 2) The critical strain energy release rate increases as the content of glass increases, and especially shows dramatic increase for the high glass fiber content specimens. 3) Major failure mechanisms can be classfied such as localized shear yielding, fiber-matrix debonding, matrix micro-cracking, and fiber pull-out and/or delamination.

In this paper, failure probabilities of the OPR1000 reactor vessel under pressurized thermal shock (PTS) were estimated using the probabilistic fracture mechanics code, R-PIE. Input variables of initial crack distribution, crack size, copper contents, and upper shelf toughness were selected for the sensitivity analyses. A wide range of the input data were considered. Through-wall cracking frequencies determined by the product of the vessel failure probability and the corresponding occurrence frequency of the transient were also compared to the acceptance criterion. The results showed that transient history had the most significant impact on the vessel failure probability. Moreover, conservative assumptions resulted in extremely high through-wall cracking frequencies.

Tensile and J-R tests were carried out to estimate the effects of dynamic strain aging(DSA) on SA106Gr.C piping steel. Tensile tests were performed under temperature range RT to $400^{\circ}C$ md strain rates from $1.39{\times}10^{-4}\;to\;6.95{\times}10^{-2}/s$. Fracture toughness was tested in the temperature range RT to $350^{\circ}C$ and load-line displacement rates 0.4 and 4mm/min. The effects of DSA on the tensile properties were clearly observed for phenomena such serrated flow, variation of ultimate and yield stress, and negative stram rate sensitivity. However, the magnitude of serration and strength increase by DSA was relatively small. this may be due to high ratio of Mn to C. In addition, crack initiation resistance, Ji and crack growth resistance, dJ/da were reduced in the range of $200-300^{\circ}C$, where DSA appeared as serrated flow and UTS hardening. The temperature corresponding to minimum fracture resistance was shifted to higher temperature with increasing loading rate.
A newly conceived geopolymer composite was fabricated by a combination of the geopolymer and polyurethane sponge. The density and porosity of hardened geopolymer composite, corresponded to different pore sizes of polyurethane sponge, exhibited no significant differences from each other. However, the mechanical behavior, the compressive strength and flexural strength, showed slight differences accordingly. Fracture of the geopolymer composite exposed to high compressive load was not observed from all specimens containing polyurethane sponge. The toughness enhancement of the geopolymer composite, due to spontaneous elasticity of polyurethane sponge, crack spread, and crack diffraction, was identified through the stress-strain curve and microstructure of fracture surface. The newly designed geopolymer composite having a 3-dimensional sponge skeleton showed relatively higher flexural strength of 8.0 MPa than other conventional geopolymer composites.
Despite having many attractive properties, $ZrO_2$ ceramic has a low fracture toughness which limits its wide application. One of the most obvious tactics to improve its mechanical properties has been to add a reinforcing agent to formulate a nanostructured composite material. Nanopowders of $ZrO_2$ and Cr were synthesized from $CrO_3$ and Zr powder by high energy ball milling for 10 h. Dense nanocrystalline $2/3Cr-ZrO_2$ composite was consolidated by a high-frequency induction heated sintering method within 5 min at $600^{\circ}C$ from mechanically synthesized powder. The method was found to enable not only rapid densification but also the inhibition of grain growth, preserving the nano-scale microstructure. Highly dense $2/3Cr-ZrO_2$ composite with relative density of up to 99.5% was produced under simultaneous application of a 1 GPa pressure and the induced current. The hardness and fracture toughness of the composite were 534 kg/mm2 and $7MPa{\cdot}m1/2$, respectively. The composite was determined to have good biocompatibility.

${\beta}-SiAlON$, based on its high fracture toughness, good strength and low abrasion resistance, has been adopted in several industrial fields such as bearings, turbine blades and non-ferrous metal refractories. In general, ${\beta}-SiAlON$ is fabricated by reactive sintering using expensive $Si_3N_4$ and AlN as starting materials. On the other hand, in this study, a cheaper ${\beta}-SiAlON$ starting powder synthesized by SHS was employed to improve price competitiveness compared to that of the reactive sintering process. ${\beta}-SiAlON$ ceramics with various content of the sintering additive $Y_2O_3$ up to 7 wt% were fabricated by conventional pressureless sintering at $1800^{\circ}C$ for 2 to 8 h under $N_2$ pressure of 0.1 MPa. The specimen with 3 wt% $Y_2O_3$ exhibited the best mechanical properties: hardness of 14 GPa, biaxial strength of 830 MPa, fracture toughness of $5MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and wear rate of about $3{\times}10^{-6}mm^3/N{\cdot}m$.

The comparison of sintering behavior and mechanical properties of ultra-fine WC-10wt.%Co and WC-10wt.%Fe hard materials produced by high-frequency induction heated sintering (HFIHS) was accomplished using ultra fine powder of WC and binders(Co, Fe). The advantage of this process allows very quick densification to near theoretical density and prohibition of grain growth in nano-structured materials. Highly dense WC-10Co and WC-10Fe with a relative density of up to 99% could be obtained with simultaneous application of 60 MPa pressure and induced current within 1 minute without significant change in grain size. The hardness and fracture toughness of the dense WC-10Co and WC-10Fe composites produced by HFIHS were investigated.

Plain concrete is a brittle material with a very low tensile strength compared to compressive strength and critical tensile strain. This study analyzed the dynamic characteristics of high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites based on slurry-infiltrated fiber concrete (SIFCON-based HPFRCC), which maximizes the steel-fiber volume fraction and uses high-strength mortar to increase resistance to loads, such as explosion and impact, with a very short acting time. For major experimental variables, three levels of fiber aspect ratio and five levels of fiber volume fraction between 6.0% and 8.0% were considered, and the flexural strength and toughness characteristics were analyzed according to these variables. Furthermore, three levels of the aspect ratio of used steel fibers were considered. The highest flexural strength of 65.0 MPa was shown at the fiber aspect ratio of 80 and the fiber volume fraction of 7.0%, and the flexural strength and toughness increased proportionally to the fiber volume fraction. The test results according to fiber aspect ratio and fiber volume fraction revealed that after the initial crack, the load of the SIFCON-based HPFRCC continuously increased because of the high fiber volume fraction. In addition, sufficient residual strength was achieved after the maximum strength; this achievement will bring about positive effects on the brittle fracture of structures when an unexpected load, such as explosion or impact, is applied.
Cr3C2 -dispersed TiC composites were prepared via HPCS(high pressure-self combustion sintering) pro-cess using mixtures of Ti, Cr and a carbon source for the purpose of increasing the facture toughness and sinterability of TiC. In this study the microstructure and properties of the composites were investigated in terms of relation to the carbon source the particle size of Ti and the amount of Cr. It was found that car-bon black was the most effective carbon source among the various carbon sources tested and the reaction was more effective as the particle size of Ti decreased. Among the sintered composites of Ti-C-Cr system the one with 30wt% Cr showed the best physical properties with 0.5% in apparent porosity 98.8% in re-lative density 18.2 GPa in hardness and 4.46 MPa.m1/2 in fracture toughness. In addition it was observed that the lattice constant of TiC decreased gradually with increasing the amount of Cr.
