Thermal Strain Measurement of Austin Stainless Steel (SS304) during a Heating-cooling Process

  • In this study, measurement of thermophysical properties of materials at high temperatures was performed. This experiment employed a heater device to heat the material to a high temperature. The images of the specimen surface due to thermal load at various temperatures were recorded using charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras. Afterwards, the full-field thermal deformation of the specimen was determined using the digital image correlation (DIC) method. The capability and accuracy of the proposed technique are verified by two experiments: (1) thermal deformation and strain measurement of a stainless steel specimen that was heated to $590^{\circ}C$ and (2) thermal expansion and thermal contraction measurements of specimen in the process of heating and cooling. This research focused on two goals: first, obtaining the temperature dependence of the coefficient of thermal expansion, which can be used as data input for finite element simulation; and second, investigating the capability of the DIC method in measuring full-field thermal deformation and strain. The results of the measured coefficient of thermal expansion were close to the values available in the handbook. The measurement results were in good agreement with finite element method simulation results. The results reveal that DIC is an effective and accurate technique for measuring full-field high-temperature thermal strain in engineering fields such as aerospace engineering.

Winding Temperature Measurement in a 154 kV Transformer Filled with Natural Ester Fluid

  • This paper measures the hot spot temperatures in a single-phase, 154 kV, 15/20 MVA power transformer filled with natural ester fluid using optical fiber sensors and compares them with those calculated by conventional heat run tests. A total of 14 optical fiber sensors were installed on the high-voltage and low-voltage windings to measure the hot spot temperatures. In addition, three thermocouples were installed in the transformer to measure the temperature distribution during the heat run tests. In the low-voltage winding, the hot spot temperature was $108.4^{\circ}C$, calculated by the conventional heat run test. However, the hot spot temperature measured using the optical fiber sensor was $129.4^{\circ}C$ between turns 2 and 3 on the upper side of the low-voltage winding. Therefore, the hot spot temperature of the low-voltage winding measured using the optical fiber sensor was $21.0^{\circ}C$ higher than that calculated by the conventional heat run test.

  • An electric railway system is composed of high-tech subsystems, among which main electric equipments such as transformers, converter and traction motors are critical components determining the performance of rolling stock. We developed a measurement system for on-line test and evaluation of performances of Korean High Speed Train. The measurement system is composed of software part and hardware part. Perfect interface between multi-users is possible. A new method to measure temperature was applied to the measurement system. By using the system, measurement and evaluation for the performance of electric equipments in Korean High Speed Train was conducted during test running.

  • Recently, as the feasibility study shows that trans-Korea railway and trans-continental railway are advantageous, interest in high-speed railway system is increasing. Because railway vehicle is environment-friendly and safe compared with airplane and ship, its market-sharing increases gradually. KHST(Korean High Speed Train) has been developed by KRRI (Korea Railroad Research Institute) for last 6 years to satisfy the need.   • Old people and patients with cardiovascular disease could die of a heart attack in the bath with heated water for a long time. Various researches have been studied to prevent these accidents from happening such as measuring the ECG signal when taking bath. However, these devices are hard to use and the higher price is not easily accepted by the public. In this paper, a low-cost and use-friendly, real time high precision water temperature monitoring device to prevent heart attack in the bath was developed. The device with waterproof design that lets the device can float on the surface of the water, and an accurate way to make water temperature measurement method was proposed by this paper that is immerging the sensor into water with 4cm depth to measure the temperature of underwater. The manufactured device was conducted to two experiments; one was to verify the basic functions of the device, and another one was for compare the proposed device with commercial products for monitoring the water temperature in the bathtub. As the experimental results shown, the proposed device has stable performance for the water temperature measurement and communicating with laptop in wireless.

  • 화력발전소 보일러 고온배관인 주증기관, 헤드 및 증기드럼 등의 설비들은 장시간동안 고온고압의 가혹한 조건으로 운전됨에 따라 크리프손상에 의해 열화되고 있다. 이들 설비의 크리프손상측정에 적용되는 종래의 비파괴기법인 레프리카법, 전기저항법 및 경도법 등은 복잡한 측정절차 및 접근성, 검사결과의 신뢰도 및 측정정도 등 여러가지면에서 단점이 많다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 화력발전소 주요 고온배관에서 발생되는 경년열화인 크리프손상에 대한초음파 측정연구를 수행한 결과로서, 고온배관재료인 Cr-Mo강의 크리프 인공열화재를 대상으로 이들에 대한 크리프손상 상태별 초음과 음속(sound velocity) 및 감쇠(attenuation)의 초음파 신호특성을 평가하였다.

  • Temperature distribution of 250W high-pressure mercury lamp has been measured by the spectroscopic method using relative intensities of spectral lines. To obtain radial temperature distribution, the measured intensity which was integrated along the line of sight was transformed into radial line intensity by Abel's inversion. Temperature was determined from relative intensities of spectral lines of the same atomic species. The measured temperature of 250W high-pressure mercury lamp is 6000K at the axis. In this experiment temperature profile of high-pressure arc is papabolic as known.

고속도강공구의 플랭크면 절삭온도 예측에 관한 연구 (A Study on Prediction of Cutting Temperature in Flank Face ar High Speed Steel)

  • Temperature distribution on flank face in orthogonal turning with cutting tool of high speed steel is studied by using a finite element method and experiments. Experiments are carried out to verify the validity of the temperature measurement by using a thermoelectric couple junction imbedded in a cutting tool of high speed steel. Good agreement is obtained between the analytical results and the experimental ones for the temperature distributions on flank face of cutting tool with high speed steel. The analytical results show that the temperature on the top flank face of a tool is higher because of the difference of the friction velocity on each face of the tool.

  • Temperature distribution on the rake face and flank face in orthogonal turning with cutting tool of high speed steel is studied by using a finite element method and experiments. Experiments are carried out to verify the validity of the temperature measurement by using a thermoelectric couple junction imbedded in a cutting tool of high speed steel. Good agreement is obtained between the analytical results and the experimental ones for the temperature distributions on both the rake face and flank face of cutting tool with high speed steel. The analytical results show that the temperature on the top flank face of a tool is higher than it on the top rake face of the tool because of the difference of the friction velocity on each face of the tool.
