Lightweight body can cause a low stiffness due to the decrease of panel thickness and reinforcing member. The other way, high stiffness body demands an increase of mass. Front pillar section area is decreased due to driver's visual field. Global vehicle stiffness is affected by stiffness distribution ratio between upper part and lower part at side body structure. This paper will describe a process used to evaluate the stiffness distribution ratio based on research of strain energy analysis of the tip rotation method. In addition, optimum design schemes are presented for high stiffness and lightweight body structure considering the investigated stiffness distribution ratio. In this way the designer will be aided by a defined design guide and a set of supporting tool to help him work towards a good design
This paper describes the development process of high stiffness body for ride and handling performance. High stiffness and light weight vehicle is a major target in the refinement of passenger cars to meet customers' contradictable requirements between ride and handling performance and fuel economy. This paper describes the analysis approach process for high stiffness body through the data level of body stiffness. According to the frequency band, we can suggest the design guideline about Is cornering static stiffness, torsional and lateral stiffness, body attachment stiffness. The ride and handling characteristic of a vehicle is significantly affected by vibration transferred to the body through the chassis mounting points from front and rear suspension. It is known that body attachment stiffness is an important factor of ride and handling performance improvement. And high stiffness helps to improve the flexibility of bushing rate tuning between Handling and road noise. It makes it possible to design the good handling performance vehicle at initial design stage and save vehicles to be used in tests by using mother car at initial design stage. These improvements can lead to shortening the time needed to develop better vehicles.

High stiffness frame design for a spine manipulation device was developed in this research. For the safety of a spinal manipulation, high stiffness of the device is required. A finite element (FE) model of the device frame is created and validated by measured vibration data. Parameters are suggested for high stiffness design of the frame. Based on the Taguchi design of experiment (DOE), a practical set of design parameter values is suggested.

Seismic dissipation devices can play a crucial role in mitigating earthquake damages, loss of life and post-event repair and downtime costs. This research investigates the use of ring springs with high-force-to-volume (HF2V) dissipaters to create damage-free, recentring connections and structures. HF2V devices are passive rate-dependent extrusion-based devices with high energy absorption characteristics. Ring springs are passive energy dissipation devices with high self-centring capability to reduce the residual displacements. Dynamic behaviour of a system with nonlinear structural stiffness and supplemental hybrid damping via HF2V devices and ring spring dampers is used to investigate the design space and potential. HF2V devices are modelled with design forces equal to 5% and 10% of seismic weight and ring springs are modelled with loading stiffness values of 20% and 40% of initial structural stiffness and respective unloading stiffness of 7% and 14% of structural stiffness (equivalent to 35% of their loading stiffness). Using a suite of 20 design level earthquake ground motions, nonlinear response spectra for 8 different configurations are generated. Results show up to 50% reduction in peak displacements and greater than 80% reduction in residual displacements of augmented structure compared to the baseline structure. These gains come at a cost of a significant rise in the base shear values up to 200% mainly as a result of the force contributed by the supplemental devices.
The design of current collection system of high speed train requires the fundamental understandings for the dynamic characteristics of catenary system and pantograph. The stiffness of catenary system of high speed train has the varying characteristics for the change of contact point with pantograph, since the supporting pole and hanger make the different boundary conditions for the up-down stiffness of a trolley wire. The variation of stiffness results in Mathiue equation, which characterizes the stability of the system. However, the two-term variation of the stiffness due to span length and hanger distance cannot be solved analytically. In this paper, the stiffness variations are calculated and the physical reasoning of linear model and one term Mathieu equation are reviewed. And the numerical analysis for the two-term variation of the stiffness is done for the several design parameters of pantograph.
This research presents a structural design of high-level waste (HLW) container using ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHP-FRC) material. The proposed design aims to overcome the drawbacks of the existing concrete containers which are heavy, difficult to fabricate, and expensive. In this study, the dry storage container (DSC) that commonly used at Canadian Nuclear facilities is selected to present the proposed design. The design has been performed such that the new UHP-FRC alternative has a structural stiffness equivalent to the existing steel-concrete-steel container under various loading scenarios. Size optimization technique is used with the aim of maximizing stiffness, and minimizing the cost while satisfying both the design stresses and construction requirements. Then, the integrity of the new design has been evaluated against accidental drop-impact events based on realistic drop scenarios. The optimization results showed: the stiffness of the UHP-FRC container (300 mm wall thick) is being in the range of 1.35-1.75 times the stiffness of existing DSC (550 mm wall thick). The use of UHP-FRC leads to decrease the container weight by more than 60%. The UHP-FRC container showed a significant enhancement in performance in comparison to the existing DSC design under considered accidental drop impact scenarios.
This paper investigates the characteristics of stiffness and load in the thrust bearing of spindle which could be changeable according to the groove shape of inlet, in order to design a high-stiffness air bearing by selecting a optimal groove shape. In experiments, dead weight and displacement sensor are used to measure the load carrying capacity and the stiffness respectively. Various shapes and different depth of groove of self-restrictor are used as experimental conditions. Comparative study between the theoretical value and the practical one by measuring the value of stiffness and load of the thrust bearing is performed.
