High$\cdot$speed steels (HSS) with a combination of good wear resistance and toughness are finding new, non-cutting applications such as rolls and rollers. In this paper, the research interests are focused on the microstructural evolution of a SMo-6W series high speed steel during HIPping and the effect of HIPping process parameters on its microstructure and properties. HIPping process variables includes; temperature, pressure and hold time. The microstructures of the HIPped HSS were examined by SEM, OM and X-ray diffraction whereas the properties measured were the relative density, hardness, and bend strength at room temperature. In HIPped materials, MC and M6C were the major carbides formed in a matrix of martensite. The effect of powder size on the microstructure and mechanical properties of HIPped materials was insignificant. However, HIPping temperature and hold time strongly affected the carbide size and distribution. The results show that at proper HIPping temperature and pressure conditions, the final products approach the full density ( > 99% RD). The particle boundaries were completely eliminated without an eminent microstructural coarsening. The bend strength was about 2.3 Gpa, which is superior to cast HSS. At excessive HIPping temperatures, rapid carbide coarsening occurred, thus deteriorating the mechanical properties of the P/M steels.

This work was intended to modify the solidification structure of high speed steel roll material for hot strip mill, by the introduction of alloying elements designed to form primary carbide dispersions via melt treatment procedure. Solidification structure was modified by the melt treatment with titanium and distribution. This modifying effect could be attributed to the fact that the nuclie formed at high temperature upon inoculation induce the formation of fine equiaxed grain and primary carbide during solification, which is also likely to be responsible for the fact that TiC acts as effective nuclie for primary VC solidification.

TiYN coated high speed steel tools have been developed and their tool lifes were assessed. First yttrium alloyed titanium target was manufactured, then using the arc ion plating(AIP) technique TiYN coating was deposited onto high speed steel substrate. Three kinds of varying thickness of TiYN coated tools were prepared. Cutting tests were carried out with theses tools and for comparison with the commercially available uncoated, TiN, TiCN and TiAlN coated tools. During the cutting tests flank wear width vs. cutting time was measured. It has been revealed that the newly developed TiYN coated tools show superior tool life characteristics to others.
Sticking behavior under the hot rolling conditions for ferritic stainless steels have been studied. Sticking, which is a phenomenon that the naked metal exposed to the surface by scale breakaway during hot rolling sticks to the roll surface, was affected by both high temperature tensile strength and oxidation resistance of the steels. A steel having higher tensile strength and lower oxidation resistance exhibits better resistance to the sticking. It is due to that higher tensile strength increases localized deformation resistance and lower oxidation resistance creates lower friction between steel and roll by forming thicker scale as a lubricant during hot rolling. So, the sticking tends to occur more severely in the order of 430J1L, 436L, 430 and 409L. The most sensitive temperature to the sticking was found to be 90$0^{\circ}C$ for all grade of steels. It was also found that the high speed steel(HSS) roll compared to the Hi-Cr roll was more beneficial to prevent sticking. Because higher surface hardness of HSS roll compared to that of Hi-Cr roll provides less nucleation sites for sticking such as scratch on the roll surface.
High speed steels (HSS) were used as cutting tools and wear parts, because of high strength, wear resistance, and hardness together with an appreciable toughness and fatigue resistance. Conventional manufacturing process for production of components with HSS was used by casting. The powder metallurgy techniques were currently developed due to second phase segregation of conventional process. The powder injection molding method (PIM) was received attention owing to shape without additional processes. The experimental specimens were manufactured with T42 HSS powders (59 vol%) and polymer (41 vol%). The metal powders were prealloyed water-atomised T42 HSS. The green parts were solvent debinded in normal n-Hexane at $60^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours and thermal debinded at $N_2-H_2$ mixed gas atmosphere for 14 hours. Specimens were sintered in $N_2$, $H_2$ gas atmosphere and vacuum condition between 1200 and $1320^{\circ}C$. In result, polymer degradation temperatures about optimum conditions were found at $250^{\circ}C$ and $480^{\circ}C$. After sintering at $N_2$ gas atmosphere, maximum hardness of 310Hv was observed at $1280^{\circ}C$. Fine and well dispersed carbide were observed at this condition. But relative density was under 90%. When sintering at $H_2$ gas atmosphere, relative density was observed to 94.5% at $1200^{\circ}C$. However, the low hardness was obtained due to decarbonization by hydrogen. In case of sintering at the vacuum of $10^{-5}$ torr at temperature of $1240^{\circ}C$, full density and 550Hv hardness were obtained without precipitation of MC and $M_6C$ in grain boundary.

Under the optimal cutting conditions, determined the machinability difference of cutting tools are by two major factors. One is the geometric shape of the cutting tool, and the other is the tool materials or heat treatment or coating of the cutting tool. In this research, we evaluated the machinability of cutting tools with conventional HSS and P/M(powder metallurgy) which was made from the different of materials and manufacture processes. Tool wear, surface roughness, cutting force and squareness of machined workpiece were evaluated.
Direct energy deposition (DED) is an additive manufacturing technique that involves the melting of metal powder with a high-powered laser beam and is used to build a variety of components. In recent year, it can be widely used in order to produce hard, wear resistant and/or corrosion resistant surface layers of metallic mechanical parts, such as dies and molds. For the purpose of the hardfacing to achieve high wear resistance and hardness, application of high speed steel (HSS) can be expected to improve the tool life. During the DED process using the high-carbon steel, however, defects (delamination or cracking) can be induced by rapid solidification of the molten powder. Thus, substrate preheating is generally adopted to reduce the deposition defect. While the substrate preheating ensures defect-free deposition, it is important to select the optimal preheating temperature since it also affects the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties. In this study, AISI M4 powder was deposited on the AISI 1045 substrate preheated at different temperatures (room temperature to $500^{\circ}C$). In addition, the micro-hardness distribution, cooling rates, and microstructures of the deposited layers were investigated in order to observe the influence of the substrate preheating on the mechanical and metallurgical properties.

Tool steels serve a large range of applications including hot and cold workings of metals and injection mouldings of plastics or light alloys. The high speed steels (HSS) are specifically used as cutting tools and wear parts because it has high strength, wear resistance and hardness along with appreciable toughness and fatigue resistance. From the view of HSS microstructure, it can be described as metallic matrix composites formed by a ferrous with a dispersion of hard and wear resistant carbides. The experimental specimens were manufactured using the PIM with T42 powders (50~80 vol.%) and polymer (20~50 vol.%). The green parts were debinded in n-hexane solution at $60^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours and thermal debinded at an $N_2-H_2$ mixed gas atmosphere for 8 hours. Specimens were sintered in high vacuum ($10^{-5}$ Torr) and various temperatures.

The steel plate for shadow mask is used in a Cathode-ray tube of TV monitor and is the strictest product in surface quality because hundreds thousand of holes are perforated in a plane of 25 ${\times}$25 inches. To mass-produce this product, a reversible cold rolling mill for silicon steel was used and the rolling technology and the activity for quality improvement are described in this work. Because the steel plate is a mild steel, which is very sensitive to strip-breakage even in a low tension, we reset the minimum tension values matching to the operating conditions. The roll mark due to the multi-segmented araangement of shape controlling roll was prevented by hardening the intermediate shape controlling roll and by changing the existing working-roll into a HSS (Hig Speed Steel) roll. The scratch caused by the speed difference between a idle roll and a strip was prevented by increasing the roll roughness. With these activities, the steel plate for shadow mask can be stable. The continuous improvement of quality is, however, required for the customer satisfaction both of domestic and overseas market.
In recent times the potential application of the high speed steel produced by HIP process for wear resistant and cutting materials are increasing. In this work the microstructure of Anval 30 produced by HIP process was investigated and the effect of WC, TiC addition on microstructure formation and wear properties were studied. After HIP process at 1150 $^{\circ}C$, the original feature of spherical raw powders was not removed and consequently, nonuniform microstructure was formed. However the WC added by simple powder mixture incereased the sinterbility of high speed steel and uniform microstructure formed. The wear characteristics of Anval 30 with carbide addition were tested at RT and $600^{\circ}C$. The uniform microstructure played an more important role in wear resistance as compared with the hardness.
