  • In the present study, capability of improving the liquid atomization of a high-speed liquid jet by using wall impingement is explored, and its application to a jet engine atomize. is demonstrated. Water is injected from a thin nozzle. The liquid jet impinges on a wall positioned close to the nozzle exit, forming a liquid film. The liquid film velocity and the SMD were measured with PDA and LDSA, respectively. It was shown that the SMD of the droplets was determined by the liquid film velocity and impingement angle, regardless of the injection pressure or impingement wall diameter. When the liquid film velocity was smaller than 300m/s, a smaller SMD was obtained, compared with a simple free jet. This wall impingement technique was applied to a conventional air-blasting nozzle for jet engines. A real-size air-blasting burner was installed in a test rig in which three thin holes were made to accommodate liquid injection toward the intermediate ring, as an impingement wall. The air velocity was varied from 41 to 92m/s, and the liquid injection pressure was varied from 0.5 to 7.5 MPa. Combining wall impinging pressure atomization with gas-blasting produces remarkable improvement in atomization, which is contributed by the droplets produced in the pressure atomization mode. Comparison with the previous formulation for conventional gas-blasting atomization is also made, and the effectiveness of utilizing pressure atomization with wall impingement is shown.

  • The present article deals with the numerical calculations for the inter-spray impingement of two diesel sprays under the conditions of high injection pressure. The Wave model involving the cavitation effect inside the nozzle was used for describing the atomization process. In particular, a hybrid model for drop collision was newly suggested in this study and compared with the O'Rourk's model, which has been widely used for diesel sprays. The impingement angles of 60 and 90 degrees were considered for simulation of non-evaporative diesel sprays. The calculated results for tip penetration were compared with experimental data and the Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD) characteristic was analyzed. It was concluded that the hybrid model slightly shows better agreement with experimental data than the O'Rourke's model. However, the more elaborate study should be needed for better understanding of spray-to-spray impingement phenomena.

  • Numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the characteristics of the mist flow through the fire suppression nozzles. The commercial CFD software, FLUENT with the proper modeling was applied for analyzing both the internal and external flow of the spray nozzles. Computations were made for the full cone nozzle in the operation range of the low pressure and high flow-rate. To validate the present computational procedure, numerical results are compared with measurements in terms of K-factor, SMD, axial spray velocity and spray angles. Numerical results suggested that the present numerical model can be used as an adequate tool for a design purpose of mist-spray nozzles.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze heterogeneous distribution of branch-like structure at downstream region of inner spray. The previous many studies about diesel spray structure have yet stayed in the analysis of 2-D structure, and there are very few of informations which are concerned with 3-D analysis of the structure. The heterogeneous distribution of droplets in inner spray affects the mixture formation of diesel spray, and also the combustion characteristics of the diesel engines. Therefore, in order to investigate 3-D structure of evaporative spray the laser beam of 2-D plane was used in this study. Liquid fuel was injected from a single-hole nozzle (l/d=5) into a constant-volume vessel under high pressure and temperature in order to visualize the spray phenomena. The incident laser beam was offset on the central axis. From the images analysis taken by offset of laser beam, we examine formation mechanism of heterogeneous distribution by vortex flow at the downstream of the diesel spray. As the experimental results, the branch-like structure formed heterogeneous distribution of the droplets consists of high concentration of vapor phase in the periphery of droplets and spray tip of branch-like structure. Also the 3-D spatial structure of the evaporative diesel spray can be verified by images obtained from 2-D measurement methods.

  • This study discusses the development of waterproofing layer jet-spray nozzle that forms a three-dimensional air cell. This nozzle has an air flow generation mechanism in the air groove of the attachment cell part located at the end of the injection nozzle. Since the air grooves also function as an air curtain, the airborne particles generated when the waterproof material is sprayed is effectively blocked. In the past, spraying of the waterproof material through the high pressure was possible, but this technology allows stable injection due to the static agitation method, and various problems caused by particle generation has been (damages to neighboring areas, economic loss, etc.) minimized.

  • An object of this study is to understand the correlation of injection characteristics and injector dimensions according to biodiesel mixture. The Injection characteristics of different types of common-rail injectors are the number of nozzle holes (5~8), jet cone angle ($146^{\circ}{\sim}153^{\circ}$), hydraulic flow rate (830~900 ml/min) injection quantity and response time. Prior to characteristic experiment, the reference injector has been selected in 6 candidates injectors under the investigation of injected quantity according to the biodiesel mixture so that injector type can be determined. The injector is used for the characteristic experiment which varied the various operating conditions including pressure 23 MPa, 80 MPa, 160 MPa, changing in injection duration 0.16 ms~1.2 ms and even mixture ratio. The result shows that the nozzle hole number and cone angle influence the injection quantity much more than nozzle hole diameter at low injection pressure and the nozzle hole diameter at high injection pressure, post injection duration.

  • The current machinery and tools of secondary channel of the nuclear power plants were produced in the carbon-steel and low-alloy steel. What produced with the carbon-steel occurs wall thinning effect from flow accelerated corrosion by the fluid flow at high temperature, high pressure. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle-installed. Wall thinning by flow accelerated corrosion occurs piping system, the heat exchanger, steam condenser and feedwater heaters etc,. Feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced sever wall thinning damage, which will increase as operating time progress. This study describes the comparisons between the numerical results using the FLUENT code and experimental data of down scale model.

  • Spray characteristics of the APU simplex fuel nozzle are investigated. Four flight conditions such as sea level idle, sea level max power, 20,000 feet idle, 20,000 feet max power are used as spray experimental conditions. Spray visualization was performed by using ND-YAG laser. Droplet size and velocity were measured by using PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) system. From the test result, SMD is 100 ${\mu}$m and velocity is 10 m/s at 20,000 ft idle condition. In this condition, flame unstability could be occurred due to the higher drop diameter. Therefore it is necessary to decrease the droplet diameter in the high altitude condition.

  • In the micro turbojet engine less than 350kw power class, it is not easy to find out the good atomization fuel injector with good spray quality. However conceptually, rotating fuel injection system can give high atomization quality by only the centrifugal force of a high speed rotating shaft of the engine without high-pressure fuel pump. With this motivation, we manufactured very small rotating fuel injector of 40 mm diameter and performed under a variety of injection orifices. We measured droplet size, velocity and spray distribution by the PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) system. Also spray was visualized by using high speed camera. From the test results, we could understand that the length of liquid column from the injection orifice is mainly controlled by the rotational speeds. Furthermore, droplet size(SMD) is decreased with the rotational speeds and is influenced by the diameter of the injection orifice and liquid film thickness.

  • The factors to act on atomization of liquid fuel are viscosity, geometric shape of nozzle, atomizing pressure, etc. Most of high viscous liquid fuels show decrease in viscosity by raising the preheat temperature, but the viscosity of liquid fuel like CWM does not readily change with fuel temperature. As an experimental study to investigate the atomizing characteristics of CWM, CWM fuel is atomizing with a twin-fluid atomizer, and the effects of the geometric shape of spray nozzle on atomization are investigated by measuring the Sauter`s Mean Diameter (SMD) of CWM. The summarized results obtained in this study are as follows ; (1) As the ratio of the mass flows of atomizing air to that of fuel (W$_{a}$ /W$_{1}$) increases, 능 decreases when fuel temperature is constant. (2) At the ratio (t/d) 4 of thickness (t) of spray nozzle hole to the diameter (d) of the hole, there is the best atomization. And SMD decreases when t/d is between 1 to 4 and increases when t/d > 4.
