The adsorptive removal properties of synthetic A4 zeolite were investigated against a total of 16 offensive odors consisting of reduced sulfur compounds (RSCs), nitrogenous compounds (NCs), volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and phenols/indoles (PnI). Removal of these odors was measured using a laboratory-scale impinger-based adsorption setup containing 25 g of the zeolite bed (flow rate of $100mL\;min^{-1}$). The high est and lowest breakthrough (%) values were shown for PnIs and RSCs, respectively, and the maximum and minimum adsorption capacity (${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$) of the zeolite was observed for the RSCs (range of 0.77-3.4) and PnIs (0.06-0.104), respectively. As a result of sorptive removal by zeolite, a reduction in odor strength, measured as odor intensity (OI), was recorded from the minimum of approximately 0.7 OI units (indole [from 2.4 to 1.6]), skatole [2.2 to 1.4], and p-cresol [5.1 to 4.4]) to the maximum of approximately 4 OI units (methanethiol [11.4 to 7.5], n-valeric acid [10.4 to 6.5], i-butyric acid [7.9 to 4.4], and propionic acid [7.2 to 3.7]). Likewise, when removal was examined in terms of odor activity value (OAV), the extent of reduction was significant (i.e., 1000-fold) in the increasing order of amy acetate, i-butyric acid, phenol, propionic acid, and ammonia.
One-way degassing valves are designed to allow pressure to be released from an air-tight package while preventing air from getting back into the package. Air, especially the oxygen ($O_2$) portion of air, can have negative effects on the package contents and its freshness. The most common application of the one-way degassing valve is for fresh roasted coffee. Demands of one-way degassing valves have been increasing with the high growth of global coffee market. In this study, we have developed one-way degassing valves for coffee and food packaging using ring type rubber disk, named SP valve. Its quality and performance was verified with test results to be equal with that of global top maker's product, Goglio valve. SP valves showed 820~1200 Pa of opening pressure, 10~50 Pa of closing pressure, 1.2~1.6 L/ min of flow rate. And, the SP valve applicable to ferment food packaging is expected to contribute to globalize Korean traditional food.
[ $Yb_2O_3$ ] films were successfully deposited on a cube-textured Ni and(100) $SrTiO_3$(STO) single crystal substrates by metal organic chemical vapor deposition(MOCVD) method using $H_2O$ vapor as an oxidant. $H_2O$ vapor was used in order to avoid the oxidation of Ni substrate. The working pressure and Ar flow rate were 10 Ton and 600 sccm, respectively. $Yb_2O_3$ films on STO were formed at high temperatures above $900^{\circ}C$. While XRD peaks from $Yb_2O_3$ were hardly detected at $900^{\circ}C$, the $Yb_2O_3$(400) texture was developed fur the films grown at deposition temperatures above $950^{\circ}C$. The AEM surface roughness of $Yb_2O_3$ film, grown on STO, was in the range of $6{\sim}10nm$ for the film deposited at $950^{\circ}C$ with a $H_2O$ vapor partial pressure of 5.5 Ton and deposition times of 3 and 5 mins. For cube-textured Ni substrate, both $Yb_2O_3$(222) and $Yb_2O_3$ (400) textures were developed textures at deposition temperatures above $850^{\circ}C$.

A simple high performance liquid chromatography - diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) method has been developed and validated for simultaneous determination of the six components (cinnamic acid, cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, atractylenolide I, atractylenolide III, and ergosterol) in Oryeongsan. In addition, identification of six marker compounds was conducted by a LC-MS/MS analysis. The six compounds in Oryeongsan were separated on Shishedo $C_{18}$ column (5 ${\mu}m$, $4.6{\times}250$ mm) at a column temperature of $30^{\circ}C$. The mobile phase was a mixture of 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) water and acetonitrile employing gradient elution at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. The detection wavelength was set at 205, 250, 280, and 330 nm. The developed method had good linearity ($R^2$ > 0.9997) and the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were observed within the ranges 0.01~0.15 and 0.05~0.45 ${\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) values of intra- and inter-day testing were indicated that less than 3% and 90.31~103.31% of accuracy. The results of recovery test were 90.56~106.72% and RSD range was measured from 0.84 to 2.95%. In conclusion, this HPLC-DAD method has been successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of six compounds in Oryeongsan samples.
Taxol which is recognized as a powerful anticancer reagent was extracted from yew extract and separated by NP-HPLC (Normal-PhaseHigh Performance Liquid Chromatography). The experiments were performed in the isocratic mode with $5{\mu}l$ to $100{\mu}l$ injection volume and 1ml/min mobile phase flow rate. The major mobile phase was hexane and small amounts of ethanol, methanol, 1-propanol and isopropanol were added to change the retention behavior. Prior to a real sample, the artificial mixture of taxol, cephalomannine and 10-deacetyltaxol was tested. They are hard to be separated because of similar chemical structures. The experimental results showed that the proper composition of mobile phase for separating the three components was found 96% hexane and 4% ethanol(vol.%) or 96% hexane, 2% 1-propanol and 2% methanol(vol.%). Compared to the run time of 80 minutes for the binary system, the mixture was separated within 50 minutes with the less amount of mobile phase for the ternary system. Finally, $1{\mu}g$ of taxol was separated from yew tree extracts under the optimum operating conditions.
Fire scenarios in a space $20.0m\;\times\;4.0m$ floor and 3.0m high were simulated by using computational fluid dynamics program (FDS 4.0.3) to investigate the effect of the combined operation of both sprinkler and vent systems, which are installed for cooling and blocking smoke which propagates beneath the ceiling of a horizontal corridor, on the temperature and smoke density of it. It was shown that the combined operation both sprinkler and vent systems was more effective than each operation for cooling and blocking smoke, the number of operating sprinklers was two because of corner effect of wall, and over-installed sprinklers deteriorated the effect of cooling and blocking smoke. This study showed that the case of two sprinklers and vent flow rate $3.0m^3/s$ in fire scenario was the most effective for cooling and blocking smoke. It was confirmed that the smoke downdrag occurs in operating sprinkler system, and the more smoke droplets produced by increasing fire size, the greater smoke downdrag occurred.
This study was performed to evaluate some geometrical characteristics of disc type swirl nozzles and to develop nozzles having improved spraying performance for knapsack sprayers. Considered geometrical characteristics of the nozzles were disc thickness, orifice diameter, swirl chamber diameter and shape of the swirl chamber (nozzle chamber). 3 types of nozzle cores were compared. Main results of this study were as follows. 1. Spraying angle (A) was increased with decreasing disc thickness (x), and with increasing orifice diameter (y) or spraying pressure (z). The equation was as a follow. $$A=3.95\frac{1}{x}+73.50\sqrt{y}+18.97\sqrt{z}-60.16$$ 2. Spraying flow rate (F) was increased with decreasing disc thickness (x), and with increasing orifice diameter (y) or spraying pressure (z). The equation was as a follow. $$F=-89.95x+611.09y+620.49\sqrt{z}-868.20$$ 3. Mean spraying droplet size (V) was decreased with decreasing disc thickness (x), with increasing orifice diameter (y) in low spraying pressure, with decreasing orifice diameter (y) in high spraying pressure, and with increasing spraying pressure (z). $$V=148.77x^4-746.85x^3+1311.76x^2-917.31x$$ 4. The spray pattern was compared using CV values. The CV value of the nozzle core type 1 was 26.7% in spraying pressure $3\;kgf/cm^2$, the CV value of the core type 2 was 23.6% in spraying pressure $2\;kgf/cm^2$, the CV value of the core type 3 was 20.6% in spraying pressure $1\;kgf/cm^2$. 5. Minimum spraying pressure was improved from $1.5\;kgf/cm^2\;to\;1.0\;kgf/cm^2$ by changes of nozzle core shape.
Purpose: Chronic infected wounds sustained over 4 weeks with exposed tendon or bone are difficult challenges to plastic surgeons. Vacuum assisted closure (VAC) device has been well used for the management of chronic wounds diminishing wound edema, reducing bacterial colonization, promoting formation of granulation tissue and local blood flow by negative pressure to wounds. But Commercial ready-made VAC device might have some difficulties to use because of its high expenses and heavy weight. So we modified traditional VAC device with silver dressing materials as topical therapeutic agents for control of superimposed bacterial wound infection such as MRSA, MRSE and peudomonas. Methods: We designed the modified VAC device using wall suction, 400 cc Hemovac and combined slow release silver dressing materials. We compared 5 consecutive patients' data treated by commercial ready-made VAC device(Group A) with 11 consecutive patients' data treated by modified VAC device combined with silver dressing materials(group B) from September 2004 to June 2007. Granulation tissue growth, wound discharge, wound culture and wound dressing expenses were compared between the two groups. Results: In comparison of results, no statistical differences were identified in reducing rate of wound size between group A and B. Wound discharge was significantly decreased in both groups. Modified VAC device with silver dressing materials showed advantages of convenience, cost effectiveness and bacterial reversion. Conclusion: In combination of modified VAC device and silver dressing materials, our results demonstrated the usefulness of managing chronic open wounds superimposed bacterial infection, cost effectiveness compared with traditional VAC device and improvement of patient mobility.
This study focused on estimating the feasibility of a strong basic anion exchanger (PA312OH) as a sorbent for the removal of residual reactive dye and saving chemicals and water. Cellulose reactive dye C.I.RB49 was tested because reactive dye is the largest single group of dyes and that dye needs larger amount of inorganic salts as dyeing agent but nearly 50% of reactive dyes may be lost to the effluent. The adsorption characteristics of PA312OH for C.I.RB49 were as follows. Ion-selectivity among the dye and inorganic salts was Dye > ${SO_4}^{2-}$ > ${CO_3}^{2-}$ > $Cl^-$. C.I.RB49 was exchanged more than 3 times ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and ${CO_3}^{2-}$ and $Cl^-$ was not exchanged absolutely. The exchanging velocity was increased exponentially with increasing temperature. This result is positive effect on treating the high temperature dyeing process wastewater. The exchanged dye percents to initial were 96.8% and 99% at flow rate 20.5 mL/min. and 3.7 mL/min.. The exchanging capacity of PA312OH for C.I.RB49 was 215.2 mg/g at conc.=369.2 mg/L, Temp.=$25^{\circ}C$. 74% inorganic salts were recrystallized from real dark reactive color dyeing wastewater treated with PA312OH.
Annually, the scale of agricultural areas in Korea were being reduced as the lands were converted to other land uses. While the rate of productivity were either being maintained or increased, the pollution load from these areas were still greater in magnitude. Although the levels of pollutant concentration released in the agricultural watersheds were minimal, the combined quantities mostly from diffuse sources were high. As a consequence, the Ministry of Environment (MOE) in Korea adopted the use of free water surface (FWS) flow constructed wetlands to reduce the pollutant loadings emitted from agricultural watersheds for the improvement of water quality and protection of aquatic ecosystems. In this study, a constructed wetland treating stream water in an agricultural watershed was monitored since April 2009 subsequent to its completion in December 2008. Satisfactory performance was achieved for TSS, BOD and TP with 26%, 28% and 39% pollutant removal rates, respectively. In addition, the effluent water quality was improved and achieved compliance the national water quality criteria. Results of this study can be useful to establish design parameters and employ proper removal techniques of similar natural treatment systems for future implementation in the country.
