  • Future communication systems are to be designed to support and serve multimedia and multipledata transmission. Nowadays, requirement of mobile subscribers for the various information such as movie, GPS(Global Positioning System) information, news-is increasing significantly. However, due to practical reasons, the capacity and number of capable channels are limited. To solve this problem, a large number of methods and schemes have been proposed and are under research. In this paper, we demonstrate how satellite DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) system works with hierarchical modulation scheme. By using hierarchical modulation, we can analyze the capacity. Meanwhile, system performance os evaluated and compared to conventional DMB system without using hierarchical modulation.

  • In this paper, we propose a hierarchical packet scheduling technique to closely approximate a hierarchical extension of the generalized processor sharing model, Hierarchical Generalized Processor Sharing (H-GPS). Our approach is to undertake the tasks of service guarantee and hierarchical link sharing in an independent manner so that each task best serves its own objective. The H-GPS model is decomposed into two separate service components: the guaranteed service component to consistently provide performance guarantees over the entire system, and the excess service component to fairly distribute spare bandwidth according to the hierarchical scheduling rule. For tight and harmonized integration of the two service components into a single packet scheduling algorithm, we introduce two novel concepts of distributed virtual time and service credit, and develop a packet version of H-GPS called Hierarchical Fair Queueing (HFQ). We demonstrate the layerindependent performance of the HFQ algorithm through simulation results.

  • We propose a scheme for more efficient navigation in a hierarchical file system. In the proposed scheme, a program running in the background computes the degree of relationship between a current file and others, and builds a list of the most related files. The current relationship metric being used by the program is a linear combination of five parameters: the name, the directory path, the type, the created time, and the last accessed time of a file. A simulated annealing algorithm is used in order to determine the weighting factors of the parameters. A set of experiments were conducted in order to access the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • The future mobile communication system should be operated with hierarchical cellular system for providing high quality multimedia services within limited wireless resources. In this paper, we have studied a call admission control scheme applied in hierarchical CDMA cellular system nested with macro, macro, and pico cells. When the proposed call admission control algorithm was applied we got 20% more system capacity than no admission control was applied.

  • The paper studies design of a decentralized supervisory controller with 2-level hierarchical structure for complex discrete event systems. Hierarchical structure with strict output-control-consistency(SOCC) gives a more abstract model for high-level control. The decentralized controller for a simple and abstract high-level system is designed more easily if the decentralized supervisory control problem in 2-level hierarchical structure systems(DSCP2) is solvable.

  • To solve the rule explosion problem in multi input fuzzy logic system, a method of converting a given fuzzy system to 2 layered hierarchical fuzzy system is presented where the collection of the THEN-parts of the fuzzy rules of given fuzzy system is considered as vectors of fuzzy rule. At the 1 st layer, linearly independent fuzzy rule vectors generated from the given fuzzy logic system are used and, at the 2nd layer, linear combinations of these independent fuzzy rule vectors are used for fuzzy logic units at each layer. The resultant 2 layered hierarchical fuzzy system has not only equivalent approximation capability, but less number of fuzzy rules compared with the conventional fuzzy logic system.

  • A smart dust monitoring system is useful for obtaining information on rough terrain that is difficult for humans to access. One of ways to deploy sensors to gather information in smart dust environment is to use an aircraft in the Amazon rainforest to scatter an enormous amount of small and cheap sensors (or smart dust devices), or to use an unmanned spacecraft to throw the sensors on the moon's surface. However, scattering an enormous amount of smart dust devices creates the difficulty of managing such devices as they can be scattered into inaccessible areas, and also causes problems such as bottlenecks, device failure, and high/low density of devices. Of the various problems that may occur in the smart dust environment, this paper is focused on solving the bottleneck problem. To address this, we propose and construct a three-layered hierarchical smart dust monitoring system that includes relay dust devices (RDDs). An RDD is a smart dust device with relatively higher computing/communicating power than a normal smart dust device. RDDs play a crucial role in reducing traffic load for the system. To validate the proposed system, we use climate data obtained from authorized portals to compare the system with other systems (i.e., non-hierarchical system and simple hierarchical system). Through this comparison, we determined that the transmission processing time is reduced by 49%-50% compared to other systems, and the maximum number of connectable devices can be increased by 16-32 times without compromising the system's operations.

  • In this paper, we propose a system for analyzing nutrition status based on hierarchical fuzzy inference approach, where the hierarchical fuzzy approach used to analyze the transition process on the nutritional status from an obesity degree, the previous nutritional status, and the eating pattern with an individual. Moreover we discussed about the selection method of fuzzy membership intervals of the next layer to improve the reliability of inference results in hierarchical fuzzy system, where their intervals are modified by using statistical information of the defuzzified results obtained from the previous layer. To show the effectiveness of this system, we evaluated the nutritional status from the information of anthropometric measurement, biochemical test, and INQ on 113 people over the age of 65, and also analyzed their nutritional status.

  • Fast and high-quality document clustering algorithms play an important role in providing data exploration by organizing large amounts of information into a small number of meaningful clusters. In particular, hierarchical clustering provide a view of the data at different levels, making the large document collections are adapted to people's instinctive and interested requires. Many papers have shown that the hierarchical clustering method takes good-performance, but is limited because of its quadratic time complexity. In contrast, K-means has a time complexity that is linear in the number of documents, but is thought to produce inferior clusters. Think of the factor of simpleness, high-quality and high-efficiency, we combine the two approaches providing a new system named CONDOR system [10] with hierarchical structure based on document clustering using K-means algorithm to "get the best of both worlds". The performance of CONDOR system is compared with the VIVISIMO hierarchical clustering system [9], and performance is analyzed on feature words selection of specific topics and the optimum hierarchy depth.
