In the Vector Taylor Series (VTS)-based noisy speech recognition methods, Hidden Markov Models (HMM) are usually trained with clean speech. However, better performance is expected by training the HMM with noisy speech. In a previous study, we could find that Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) estimation of the training noisy speech in the log-spectrum domain produce improved recognition results, but since the proposed algorithm was done in the log-spectrum domain, it could not be used for the HMM adaptation. In this paper, we modify the previous algorithm to derive a novel mathematical relation between test and training noisy speech in the cepstrum domain and the mean and covariance of the Multi-condition TRaining (MTR) trained noisy speech HMM are adapted. In the noisy speech recognition experiments on the Aurora 2 database, the proposed method produced 10.6% of relative improvement in Word Error Rates (WERs) over the MTR method while the previous MMSE estimation of the training noisy speech produced 4.3% of relative improvement, which shows the superiority of the proposed method.

We consider the visual barcode recognition problem in a noisy video data setup. Unlike most existing single-frame recognizers that require considerable user effort to acquire clean, motionless and blur-free barcode signals, we eliminate such extra human efforts by proposing a robust video-based barcode recognition algorithm. We deal with a sequence of noisy blurred barcode image frames by posing it as an online filtering problem. In the proposed dynamic recognition model, at each frame we infer the blur level of the frame as well as the digit class label. In contrast to a frame-by-frame based approach with heuristic majority voting scheme, the class labels and frame-wise noise levels are propagated along the frame sequences in our model, and hence we exploit all cues from noisy frames that are potentially useful for predicting the barcode label in a probabilistically reasonable sense. We also suggest a visual barcode tracking approach that efficiently localizes barcode areas in video frames. The effectiveness of the proposed approaches is demonstrated empirically on both synthetic and real data setup.
The human faces do not have distinct features unlike other general objects. In general the features of eyes, nose and mouth which are first recognized when human being see the face are defined. These features have different characteristics depending on different human face. In this paper, We propose a face recognition algorithm using the hidden Markov model(HMM). In the preprocessing stage, we find edges of a face using the locally adaptive threshold scheme and extract features based on generic knowledge of a face, then construct a database with extracted features. In training stage, we generate HMM parameters for each person by using the forward-backward algorithm. In the recognition stage, we apply probability values calculated by the HMM to input data. Then the input face is recognized by the euclidean distance of face feature vector and the cross-correlation between the input image and the database image. Computer simulation shows that the proposed HMM algorithm gives higher recognition rate compared with conventional face recognition algorithms.
Rapid strides are being made to bring to reality the technology of wearable sensors for monitoring patients' physiological data.We study the problem of automatically detecting anomalies in themeasured blood glucose levels. The normal daily measurements of the patient are used to train a hidden Markov model (HMM). The structure of the HMM-its states and output symbols-are selected to accurately model the typical transitions in blood glucose levels throughout a 24-hour period. The learning of the HMM is done using historic data of normal measurements. The HMM can then be used to detect anomalies in blood glucose levels being measured, if the inferred likelihood of the observed data is low in the world described by the HMM. Our simulation results show that our technique is accurate in detecting anomalies in glucose levels and is robust (i.e., no false positives) in the presence of reasonable changes in the patient's daily routine.
In general it has been considered to be the difficult problem that we divide continuous speech into short interval with having identical phoneme quality. In this paper we used Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) related to probability density to divide speech into phonemes, an initial, medial, and final sound. From them we peformed continuous speech recognition. Decision boundary of phonemes is determined by algorithm with maximum frequency in a short interval. Recognition process is performed by Continuous Hidden Markov Model(CHMM), and we compared it with another phoneme divided by eye-measurement. For the experiments result we confirmed that the method we presented is relatively superior in auto-segmentation in korean speech.
The classical HMM is defined by a parameter triple = (, A, B), where each parameter represents a collection of probability distributions: initial state, state transition and output distributions in order. This paper proposes a new stationary parameter e = (e1, e2, …, eN) where N is the number of states and et = P(|xt = i, y) for describing how an input pattern y ends in state xt = i at time t followed by nothing. It is often said that all is well that ends well. We argue here that all should end well. The paper sets the framework for the theory and presents an efficient inference and training algorithms based on dynamic programming and expectation-maximization. The proposed model is applicable to analyzing any sequential data with two or more finite segmental patterns are concatenated, each forming a context to its neighbors. Experiments on online Hangul handwriting characters have proven the effect of the proposed augmentation in terms of highly intuitive segmentation as well as recognition performance and 13.2% error rate reduction.
