  • Bacterial colonies which were able to oxidize the manganese were isolated from six soil samples in Byungchon area. Among them, one bacterial strain was selected for this study based on its high manganese oxidation activity. This selected bacterial strain was identified as Pseudomonas sp. MN5 through physiological-biochemical test and analysis of its 16s rRNA sequence. This selected bacterial strain was able to utilize fructose and maltose, but they doesn't utilizing various carbohydrates as a sole carbon source. Pseudomonas sp. MN5 showed a very sensitive to antibiotics such as kanamycin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin and tetracycline, but a high resistance up to mg/ml unit to heavy metals such as lithium, manganese and barium. Optimal manganese oxidation condition of Pseudomonas sp. MN5 was pH 7.5 and manganese oxidation activity was inhibited by proteinase K and boiling treatment. The manganese oxidizing protein produced by Pseudomonas sp. MN5 was purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, HiTrap Q FF anion exchange chromatography and G3000sw $_{XL}$ gel filtration chromatography. By sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, three manganese oxidizing protein with estimated molecular weights of 15 kDa, 46.7 kDa and 63.5 kDa were detected. Also, it was estimated that manganese oxidizing protein produced by Pseudomonas sp. MN5 were a kind of porin proteins through internal sequence and N-terminal sequence analysis.

  • Trace analysis of Cd and Pb at surface modified thick film graphite electrode with Bi nanopowder has been carried out using square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) technique. Bi nanopowder synthesized by gas condensation (GC) method showed the size of $50{\sim}100$ nm with BET surface area, $A_{BET}=6.8m^{2}g^{-l}$. For a strong adhesion of the Bi nanopowder onto the screen printed carbon paste electrode, nafion solution was added into Bi-containing suspension. From the SWASV, it was found that the Bi nanopowder electrode exhibited a well-defined responses relating to the oxidations of Cd and Pb. The current peak intensity increased with increasing concentration of Cd and Pb. From the linear relationship between Cd/Pb concentrations and peak current, the sensitivity of the Bi nanopowder electrode was quantitatively estimated. The detection limit of the electrode was estimated to be $0.15{\mu}g/l$ and $0.07{\mu}g/l$ for Cd and Pb, respectively, on the basis of the signal-to-noise characteristics (S/N=3) of the response for the $1.0{\mu}g/l$ solution under a 10 min accumulation.

  • The rate of photosynthesis (A) of leaves from 10 plant species (6 evergreen and 4 deciduous) of the family Fagaceae was measured using a portable photosynthesis analyzer, to examine which species take up $CO_2$ most efficiently. Of the evergreen species, the photosynthetic rate of Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii was highest, and remained above 82.1~106.4 ${\mu}mol\;kg^{-1}s^{-1}$ from July to November. Of the deciduous species, the photosynthetic rate of Quercus acutissima was higher than that of the other three species, and remained high at 83.5~116.6 ${\mu}mol\;kg^{-1}s^{-1}$ from September to November. The photosynthetic rate of the 10 species was positively correlated with stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rate (E). However, there was no correlation between photosynthetic rate and intercellular $CO_2$ concentration ($C_i$), although there was a positive correlation just in three species (Q. gilva, Q. acutissima and Q. glauca). These results suggest that the $CO_2$ fixation capacity of C. cuspidata var. sieboldii, an evergreen species, and Q. acutissima, a deciduous species, is significantly higher than that of the other species examined, and that photosynthesis is regulated by both stomatal conductance and transpiration. Therefore, C. cuspidata var. sieboldii and Q. acutissima may be valuable for the evaluation of carbon uptake in urban green spaces as well as in afforested areas.

  • To evaluate the properties of inorganic composites using a great quantity of high-calcium fly ash generated in combined heat and power plants, high-calcium fly ash and F-class fly ash commonly used as concrete admixtures were substituted with binding materials to examine changes of fluidity and compressive strength depending on the substitution ratio for each curing temperature. According to the experimental result, CFA-mixed mortar showed a tendency to reduce its flow unlike FFA-mixed mortar as the substitution ratio was increased, but its flow loss showed smaller than FFA as time passed. As a result of examining compressive strength depending on mixing FA, FFA-mixed mortar had an optimum range within 50% when curing at ambient temperature, but it was found that the compressive strength is reduced when mixing CFA. When curing at high temperature, FFA did not relatively have a great effect on the substitution ratio, but CFA could expect a strength enhancement effect compared with 100% of OPC when using within 25% of binding materials.

  • Impact of global warming on the ocean environment is reviewed based on most recently published publications. The most significant impact of global warming on marine environment is due to the melting of mountain and continental glaciers. Ice melting causes slow down and/or shut down of thermohaline circulation, and makes hypoxic environment for the first time, then makes anoxic with time. This can cause decreasing biodiversity, and finally makes global extinction of animals and plants. Furthermore, global warming causes sea-level rise, soil erosion and changes in calcium carbonate compensation depth (CCD). These changes also can make marine ecosystem unstable. If we emit carbon dioxide at a current rate, the global mean temperature will rise at least $6^{\circ}C$ at the end of this century, as predicted by IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). In this case, the ocean waters become acidic and anoxic, and the thermohaline circulation will be halted, and marine ecosystems collapsed.

  • Due to the advantages of less raw materials and fossil fuel consumption, lower carbon footprint, and the capability of pavement performance improvement, the recycling technology of asphalt is developed and applied for road rehabilitation and construction in the western countries over the past two decades. Cold recycled asphalt mixtures are bituminous materials normally made by mixing recycled aggregate from wasted asphalt with an asphalt emulsion and water at room temperature. This paper aims at investigating the properties of cold recycled asphalt mixture with alkali-activated filler according to wasted asphalt aggregate content. As a result, as the content of wasted asphalt aggregate increased, the marshall stability of cold recycled asphalt mixture decreased and void ratio increased. Also, grading curves for cold recycled asphalt mixture as specified in GR criteria were satisfied in all aggregate mixing conditions regardless of the wasted asphalt aggregate content.

  • This study was carried out to provide basic data to be necessary for the selection of an energy recovery process based on the characteristics of municipal solid wastes(MSW). The samples were collected at Kangdong-Ku in Seoul and conducted ultimate and proximate analyses. Laboratory scale anaerobic digesters were operated to determine the non biodegradable fractions of the wastes. The results indicated that carbon and hydrogen contents, and lower heating values could be calculated from the volatile contents of MSW by the following equations : C = 0.57 VS, H =0.084 VS, and HL=49.5 VS-(6-0.045VS) W. Nonbiodegradable fractions were respectively 58.9% of volatile matters and 77.7% of MSW. Incineration and refuse derived fuel(RDF) processes appeared to be the most efficient processes in terms of weight reduction and energy recovery, But determining the energy recovery processes, the fluctuations of heating values of MSW throughout a year and available landfill site and secondary pollution should be considered.

  • Due to the strong influence of nitrogen(N) on plant productivity, a vast amount of N fertilizers is used to maximize crop yield. Over-use of N fertilizers leads to severe pollution of the environment, especially the aquatic ecosystem, as well as reducing farmer's income. Growing of N-efficient cultivars is an important prerequisite for integrated nutrient management strategies in both low- and high-input agriculture. Taking maize as a sample crop, this paper reviews the response of plants to low N stress, the physiological processes which may control N-use efficiency in low-N input conditions, and the genetic and molecular biological aspects of N-use efficiency. Since the harvest index(HI) of modern cultivars is quite high, further improvement of these cultivars to adapt to low N soils should aim to increase their capacity to accumulate N at low N levels. To achieve this goal, establishment and maintenance of a large root system during the growth period may be essential. To reduce the cost of N and carbon for root growth, a strong response of lateral root growth to nitrate-rich patches may be desired. Furthermore, a large proportion of N accumulated in roots at early growth stages should be remobilized for grain growth in the late filling stage to increase N-utilization efficiency. Some QTLs and genes related to maize yield as well as root traits have been identified. However, their significance in improving maize NUE at low N inputs in the field need to be elucidated.

  • The results of the modification of metal materials treated by high temperature pulst:d plasma fluxes (HTlPPF) with a specific power of incident flux changing in the $(3...100)10^5{]\;}W/cm^2$ range and a pulse duration lying from 15 to $50{\;}\mu\textrm{s}$ have been presented. The results of HTPPF action were studied on the stainless steels of 18Cr-l0Ni, 16Cr- 15Ni, 13Cr-2Mo types; on the structural carbon steels of (13...35)Cr, St. 3, St. 20, St. 45 types; on the tool steels of U8, 65G, ShHI5 types, and others; on nickel and high nickel alloy of 20Cr-45Ni type; on zirconium- and vanadium-base alloys and other materials. The microstructure and properties (mechanical, tribological, erosion, and other properties) of modified materials and surface alloying of metals exposed to HTPPF action have been investigated. It was found that the modification of materials by HTPPF resulted in a simultaneous increase of several properties of the treated articles: microhardness of the surface and layers of 40...60 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in depth, tribological characteristics (friction coefficient, wear resistance), mechanical properties ({\sigma_y}, {\;}{\sigma_{0.2}}.{\;}{\sigma_r}) on retention of the initial plasticity ($\delta$), corrosion resistance, radistanation erosion under ion irradiation, and others. The determining factor of the changes observed is the structural-phase modification of the near-surface layers, in particular, the formation of the fine cellular structure in the near-surface layers at a depth of $20{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$ with dimension of cells changing in the range from 0.1 to $1., 5{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$, depending on the kind of material, its preliminary treatment, and the parameters of plasma fluxes. The remits obtained have shown the possibility of purposeful surface alloying of metals exposed to HTPPF action over a depth up to 20...45 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and the concentration of alloying element (Ni, Cr, V) up to 20 wt.%. Possible industrial brunches for using the treatment have been also considered, as well as some results on modifying the serial industrial articles by HTPPF.

  • Work roll wear in the cold rolling of steel strip is strongly affected by rolling materials, rolling conditions and lubrication. Tests were performed to find the effects of rolling materials under the same lubricating conditions. Surface roughness of cold rolled steel strip as well as the coating technique itself is quite improtant in obtaining high image clarity of electronic products and car outer panels. Therefore this paper reviews for improvement of roughness and peak count about the surface of Cr coated work roll is investigated from the actual temper mill. The conclusions were obtained as follows; 1) Work roll wear in the cold rolling of steel strip is strongly affected by carbon contents of rolling materials, but there is not a separating force and total reduction ratio. 2) The roughness of strip surface is larger in the direction of width than in roll direction. 3) The electro-discharge textured roll has more uniform roughness distribu- tion than shot blasted roll and it's life time is two times longer than shot blasted because it has more harmonic wave roughness, and the higher peak count of surface roughness. 4) The life time of Cr coated work roll is 2 times longer than that of shot blasted work roll and variation of peak count, roughness and life time of Cr coated work roll is similar to electro-discharge texturing work roll. 5) The proper Cr coating thickness is 10 .mu. m at the work roll of temper mill.
