  • Objective : To assess the relationship and prevalence rate among hypertension, dyslipidemia and the four commenest anthropometric measurements for obesity(body mass index(BMI), waist-hip ratio(WHR), waist circumference(WC) and body fat) in Korean adults. Methods : We studied the cross-sectional association of the anthropometric indicies and hypertension, dyslipidemia in 70 Korean adults. Hypertension was defined as blood pressure ${\ge}160/95$mmHg and classification of JNC IV, Dyslipidemia were defined as total cholesterol ${\ge}200$ mg/dl, HDL-cholesterol ${le}35$ mg/dl, LDL-cholesterol ${\ge}160$ mg/dl, triglyceride ${\ge}200$ mg/dl. Infromations on life-style factors were obtained from personal interview. Results : BMI and WHR, BMI and WC, BMI and Fat(%), WHR and WC, WC and Fat(%) had high partial correlation coefficients after age adjustment. BMI and Systolic Blood Pressure had r=0.385 coefficients, WHR and HDL-cholesterol had r=-0.360 coefficients. All four anthropomtric indicies and hypertenstion groups by JNC IV classsification had signifiant differences in women, but only fat(%) and hypertension had significant difference in men. In women, in the relationship of four anthropomtric indicies and serum lipids, total cholesterol ${\ge}200$ mg/dl group with fat(%) had a signifiant difference for normal cholesterol group, and also the group of HDL-cholesterol ${\le}$ mg/dl with WC had significance. But in men, there were no significant differences in all anthropomtric indicies and serum lipids groups. Conclusions : Korean women are more significant than Korean men in the relationship between anthropometric indicies and serum lipids, or blood pressure. But this study's samples are small, so the results are some different with results of other studies. We should study more specifically about anthropometric indicies and serum lipids, anthropometric indicies and blood pressure with many samples.

  • Clinical experience on 16 cases of open heart surgery under the extracorporeal circulation with mild or moderate hypothermia and partial hemodilution technique at the National Medical Center during the period from June 1976 to October 1977. Nine of sixteen were congenital heart disease and seven were acquired heart disease. The age of the patient ranged between 6 and 48 years. The body weight varied from 18.5kg to 60kg and body surface area 0. 79-1.70m2. The average priming volume of pump oxygenator was 2080 ml, which was consisted fresh ACD blood, buffered Hartmann`s solution, Mannitol, 50% dextrose in water and Vit. C. The average hemodilution rate was 27%. The average flow 2.3 L/min/m2 or 80 ml/min and the duration of perfusion varied from 31 min to 270 min with average of 107 min. The perfusion was carried out under the mild or moderate hypothermia using core cooling alone in 10 cases, core cooling and local myocardial cooling with $0-4^{\circ}C$ physiologic saline in 2 cases. From a hemodynamic point of view, the blood pressure dropped down around 80 mmHg after the initiation of perfusion follwed by increase to safety level and stable during the perfusion. The central venous pressure remained within normal limits. In most cases, hemoglobin and hematocrit decreased during and after the perfusion. Hemogiobin level was decreased, average of 20.6 %, hematocrit 18.6%, pletelets 55% postoperatively. Plasma hemoglobin increased moderately, from preperfusion average valve of 7.79 mg % to post-perfusion value of 54.7 mg %. Electrolytes changes during cardiopulmonary bypass showed definite hypokalemia but changes of Na, Ca were not definite. Arterial blood gas analysis during cardiopulmonary bypass suggested that the metabolic acidosis which was accompanied by respiratory alkalosis which was corrected postoperatively. As the opera tive complication, transient hemoglobinuria in 4 cases and neurological signs in 2 cases were all cured. There were 2 death cases and operative mortality rate was 12.5%.

  • We synthesized new dye sensor based on indole compound. Through the UV-vis absorptions, we analyzed chemosensing properties to explain metal binding properties. The peak absorptions increased at 472 nm when added metal cations($Cd^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Hg^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$ and $Cr^{3+}$) and gradually decreased the peak at 516 nm. Thus, this UV-Vis absorption behavior clearly showed the metal binding reaction. To measure energy level of used dye sensor, HOMO/LUMO energy value was calculated with cyclovaltagramm(CV) and using computational calculation method, in which we estimated the optimum structure of dye sensor. CV and computational calculation method, both compared to find suitable geometric structure. (with almost same energy values.) From the computational calculation, dye sensor has plane structure. So, Amine and ketone in the dye sensor faced each other and makes position to bind metal cations. In addition, these positions was supported pull-push electron system and generated MLCT process, when the dye sensor was bonded with the metal cations and resulted chemosensing properties. Through the electrochemical and computational calculation method analyze, we proposed the chemosensing principles that the dye sensor bind the metal cation between ketone and amine. Finally, the formation type of metal ion bindings was determined by Job's plot measurements.

  • Airborne particulate matters have two modes of size distributions of coarse mode and fine mode. The coarse mode which is formed by break down mechanism of large particles has a peak around the $100\;{\mu}m$, and the fine mode formed by condensation and build up mechanism of evaporated vapors has a peak at several ${\mu}m$. The coarse mode particles can be removed easily by conventional collecting equipments such as a cyclone, an electrostatic precipitator, and a filter, however the fine mode particles can not be collected easily. Usually the fine mode particles are generated in the high temperature conditions especially through boilers and incinerators, so the high efficient and temperature filter is essential for the filtration. In this study, a nano ceramic filter for the removal of fine particles in the high temperature is developed and tested for several characteristics. The nano ceramic filter has double layer of micro and nano structure and the pressure drop and the filtration efficiency for $0.31\;{\mu}m$ at 3 cm/s are 15.45 mmAq, and 96.75%, respectively. The thermal conductivity is $0.038\;W/m{\cdot}K$, and the coefficient of water vapor permeability is $3.63\;g/m^2{\cdot}h{\cdot}mmHg$. It is considered that the sensible heat exchange rate is very poor because the low thermal conductivity but it has high potential to exchange latent heat.

  • Metal problems in herbal medicine are not regulate properly by law and public management around world country until this time. General people belief as safety about herbal since natural material. And almost all persons can also purchase by their-self and use by self-prescription in reality. As this result herbal medicines can always occur acute and chronic toxicity by not proper use problems, side-effect and overdose. Heavy metal toxic diseases in historical view point was big accidents that didnot forget including minamata and itai-itai in Japan. These accident's teach to us must not use toxic metal level and not include or at least Pb Hg As Cd in all kind material use and intake by people, especially herbal. Herbal contamination research is beginner state that had not many papers until nowadays. Even if this pan had some papers, it had negative result and bigger and larger than problems level because of one way research trend of not many sample case-report and screening test of dried herbal form in chiefly. Many persons have afraid and risk thinking about herbal, animal and minerals since these cause. Further research related this subject will be needed at fact of epidemiology including case-control and cohort study for more precision research affecting in short and long term intake of oriental medicines

  • Objective : This study investigated a neuroprotective effect of Puerariae Radix on cerebral ischemia. Method : The global cerebral ischemia was induced by bilateral common carotid arteries occlusion under hypotension (40mmHg) in Sprague-Dawley rats. After the treatment of Puerariae Radix extract, changes of c-Fos and c-Jun expressions, immediate early genes expressed by cerebral ischemia, in the hippocampus were observed immunohistochemically. Result: The results obtained are as follows; The significant increases of c-Fos and c-Jun expressions were observed in the hippocampus of the ischemic damaged rat brains. Then Puerariae Radix treatment demonstrated significant decreases of c-Fos and c-Jun expressions in CA1 region and dentate gyrus as compared with control group. On the upregulated c-Fos expression induced by cerebral ischemia, Puerariae Radix treatment demonstrated significant decreases of c-Fos expressions in CA1 region (P<0.01) and dentate gyrus (P<0.05) as compared to the control group, but there were not a significant changes in CA2 and CA3 regions of the hippocampus. On the upregulated c-Jun expression induced by cerebral ischemia, Puerariae Radix treatment demonstrated significant decrease of c-Jun expression in CA1 region (P<0.05) as compared to the control group, but there were not a significant changes in CA2, CA3, and dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. Conclusion : These results suggested that Puerariae Radix reveals the neuroprotective effect through the reduction of immediate early genes, c-Fos and c-Jun, induced by cerebral ischemia.

  • Myrosinase from radish was purified by DEAE Bio-Gel, Con-A, and Superose-6 column. The purified myrosinase(II) possessed 2 subunits, and their molecular as determined by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis were 53 and 39 KD, respectively. The specific activity of purified enzyme was 37,500 units/mg. The enzyme was purified approximately 44-fold compared to the crude enzyme. Optimum pH of the myrosinase was $6.5{\sim}7.0$ in phosphate and Tris-HCl buffer solutions. Optimum temperature of the enzyme was $37{\sim}38^{\circ}C$. The enzyme was stable at pH 7.0, and less than $30^{\circ}C$. Cu or Hg ion significantly inhibited the enzyme activity, but ascorbic acid enhanced, resulting in a maximum activity by 1 mM ascorbic acid. Among the ascorbic acid analogues, dehydroascorbic acid did not affect, whereas others showed a little effect, but less than ascorbic acid itself. Individual 2-mercaptoethanol and dithiothreitol (reducing agents) did not enhance the enzyme activity. but 2-mercaptoethanol effect was enhanced when mixed with ascorbic acid.

  • The technique of radial artery cannulation and its complications are well documented, but serious complications are rare. This is a report of one case of amputation of wrist due to finger necrosis developed from the radial artery cannulation in patient who had craniectomy surgery. This 52-year-old 70kg male underwent subdural hematoma removal surgery. Right radial artery cannulation was carried out percutaneously using 22 gauge Teflon extracath needle after modified Allen's test appeared to be positive. It was intermittently flushed by heparinized solution. His arterial blood pressure was maintained 100/70 - 110/80mmHg and 5 units of banked whole blood and 1 unit of fresh frozen plasma were transfused during 8-hours operation. Cannula was removed on the 9th hour after operation because that was obstructed. On the 12th hour after removal of cannula, his right hand noted to be cool and cyanotic. So, warm towel and hot bag applied continuonsly on the right hand and the right stellate ganglion block was carried out everyday for 4 times. However, on the 10th day after removal of cannula, necrotic change of all fingers of the right hand became worse and skin of fingers were shrunken. Therefore, disarticulation of the right wrist carried out on the 71th day of his hospitalization.
