An electrothermal vaporization-hollow cathode glow discharge-atomic emission spectrometer(ETV-HCGD-AES) has been developed for detecting heavy metals in human serum and urine samples. Fisrt of all, we designed a glow discharge cell for atomic emission spectrometry and its analytical performance was studied with the standard reference materials(SRMs) purchased from the NIST. Practically, the ETV-HCGD-AES demonstrated better instrumental sensitivity and selectivity for detecting Hg and Pb in the SRMs, serum and urine, than ICP-OES since the ETV-HCGD-AES was not required the complicate sample digestion procedure, which improved sample transportation efficiency.
In relation to the scientific conservation treatment of ancient gilt bronze, the gold film coated on the bronze excavated from Hwangnam Great Tomb of Old Silla Kingdom(A. D. 5C) was studied in the view of coating technology and metallurgy of bronze. The uniform and dense gold film containing $2.44\sim12.40%$ of Hg with the thickness of $5.99\sim12.97{\mu}m$ was found to be coated on the bronze objects by amalgam coating method. On silver objects, the film with the thickness of $19.96{\mu}m$ was coated also continously and uniformly with gold by the same method. The bronze objects was fabricated by forging technique and contained almost $4.7\sim11.5%$ of Pb. Its microstructure was $\alpha-phase$ solid solution including Pb segregation in the matrix. The amount of $0.4\sim2.0%$ Zn was added in the bronze for the purpose of easy fabricating of Cu alloy. Based on the data studied, the gold film on bronze sample was reproduced by amalgam coating method and compared with the ancient gold film.
The effects of UV wavelength and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on the formation of dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM) were investigated in a controlled environment. To remove any other influences than UV wavelength and DOC, purified water was used as the working solution. DGM was instantly produced with irradiation of all UV lights even without DOC; whereas, there was no noticeable increase of DGM during irradiation of visible light. The amount of formed DGM increased as the DOC concentration increased even in dark conditions; however, UV-B irradiation significantly promoted DGM production with DOC present. The rate constants of reduction ranged from $1.4{\times}10^{-6}s^{-1}$ to $3.5{\times}10^{-5}s^{-1}$, with the lower values occurring under the dark condition without DOC and the higher values resulting under UV-B irradiation and high DOC concentration. However, DGM production was not linearly correlated with the DOC concentration at higher range of DOC in this study. Future studies should investigate the effects of DOC concentration on mercury (Hg) reduction over the broad range of DOC concentrations with different DOC structures and with other influencing parameters.

This research is about effects of obesity adults participating in 12weeks of boxing diets program on weight loss, blood pressure and blood sugar improvements. The exercise program was conducted three times a week with a maximum heart rate of 50 to 65 percent for first to forth weeks and 65 to 85 percent for fifth to twelfth. The study included 59 obese people in their 20s and 50s, with a BMI of 25kg/m2 or higher, blood pressure of 140/90mmHg, and high blood pressure and diabetes patients of 125 mg/dl per fasting blood sugar. The following results were obtained by observing the results before and after the boxing exercise program. High blood pressure, diabetes, high blood pressure + diabetes after 12 weeks showed significant weight, BMI and body fat reduction, as well as significant decrease in blood pressure and fasting blood sugar. Consequently, through this study, obese adults can lower their weight, blood pressure, and blasting fasting blood sugar through a 12-week high-strength boxing exercise program and it is believed to help improve and prevent obesity, cardiovascular disease and metabolic diseases.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in people with diabetes mellitus (DM) using Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey VII (2017~2018). Methods: DM was defined as in two ways; 1) doctor's diagnosis (Group 1, n=549), 2) one of doctor's diagnosis, medication, or hyperglycemia (Group 2, n=849). The DR prevalence was measured as the prevalence proportion (%). Risk factors for developing DR were analyzed using multiple logistic regression, and odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Results: The prevalence of DR was 25.87% in Group 1 and 20.14% in Group 2. Risk factors for DR were identified as insulin therapy (Group 1: OR=5.31, Group 2: OR=5.27), DM duration ≥10 years (Group 1: OR=2.20, Group 2: OR=3.10), and systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg (Group 1: OR=2.26, Group 2: OR=2.23) for both groups. Conclusion: Considering the DR prevalence, eye examinations education is highly recommended as part of a diabetes management programs in the community. It is also proposed to shorten the eye examination cycle for people with risk factors and establish a referral system to link between screening to treatment.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) according to the Sasang constitution (SC) and cold and heat pattern identification (CHPI). Methods: SC, CHPI, MetS, and component data were obtained from 2,561 participants in 26 Korean medical clinics from 2007 to 2013. SC, diagnosed by Korean medicine doctors, was confirmed by positive responses to herbal medicines administered according to that constitution. The CHPI was verified by a questionnaire about thermal sensitivity and drinking habits. The diagnosis criteria for MetS were: 1) waist circumference (WC) ≥90 cm (male) and ≥80 cm (female); 2) triglycerides ≥150 mg/dL; 3) high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) <40 mg/dL (male) and <50 mg/dL (female); 4) blood pressure ≧130/85 mmHg; and 5) fasting blood glucose ≥100 mg/dL. Odds ratios (ORs) and differences in MetS and its components were compared using logistic regression and ANCOVA. Results: The MetS prevalence rates were 54.1%, 22.0%, and 33.3% for Taeeumin (TE), Soeumin (SE), and Soyangin (SY), respectively, and 30.5% and 44.5% for the cold and heat patterns, respectively. ANCOVA for MetS components showed significantly higher WC in TE than in SE or SY, and all components except HDL were higher in the heat pattern group than in the cold pattern group. Logistic regression for MetS prevalence showed a significant association between TE and the heat pattern group (OR=1.653) but not for non-TE and the cold pattern group. Conclusions: Considering SC and CHPI together may be more effective in managing MetS than considering SC alone.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of food habits on blood components level(blood glucose, uric acid, hemoglobin, some lipids levels) and health condition in Taejon. The study was conducted with 250 subjects (male 130, female120) who visited in a general hospital from May to June in 1997. Questionaires were used for food habits. The data were analyzed by using $x^2$-test, t-test, ANOVA and multiple range test. Results were summerized s follow : mean of Broca Index were 110.0 $\pm$13.7% in male, 110.6$\pm$16.6% in female. Mean values of systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure were 130.9$\pm$17.6mmHg, 76.2$\pm$12.6mmHg, respectively. The systolic blood pressure was significantly higher in man than woman, Mean serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride levels were 202.8$\pm$40.2, 121.1$\pm$35.5, 50.3$\pm$12.9, 157.1$\pm$112.6mg/dl, respectively. Triglyceride level was significantly higher in man than woman. But HDL-cholesterol was significantly lower in man than woman. And also, the value of LPH and AI were higher in man. So Man has more risk of atherogenesis than woman. Mean values of blood sugar, uric acid and hemoglobin was 102.7$\pm$1.36mg/dl and 14.1$\pm$1.56g/dl were higher in man than woman except blood sugar. Food habit of woman were better than it of man. The levels of education and income did not affect to food habit score. The most problem of habits were intake of salty food and lack of exercise. The intake of nutrients were higher as food habit score was higher. Intakes of energy, Ca, vitamin A and vitamin $B^1$ were lower than RDA's of nutrients in bad food habit group. This result did not show that blood components level and health condition were significantly different by food habits. But Broca Index and triglyceride levels were higher in bad food habit group than other groups, but not statistically significant. By this result, it is more needed food habit education to man and young people. The education of food habits will include the real methods of weight control, low intake of salt and exercise to bad food habit group.

Terpolymers, which are chemical compounds composed of three different chemical compounds, have rarely been utilized for gas separation membranes. In this study, we demonstrate a simple process to fabricate a composite membrane for $CO_2/N_2$ separation based on a terpolymer synthesized from poly(2-[3-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-hydroxyphenyl] ethylmethacrylate)(PBEM), poly(oxyethylene methacrylate)(POEM), and methyl methacrylate (MMA) via free radical polymerization. A solution of the as-synthesized PBEM-PMMA-POEM was coated onto a microporous polysulfone (PSf) support to form a composite membrane. The successful polymerization and the characteristics and morphology of the membrane were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The gas permeance and $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity of the PBEM-PMMA-POEM terpolymer membrane were measured at $25^{\circ}C$. A maximum $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity of 30.2 was obtained at a $CO_2$ permeance of 57.4 GPU ($1GPU=10^{-6}cm^3$(STP)/($s\;cm^2\;cmHg$)).
Yields of shells, appearance of the shellfishes, mineral contents of the shells and their hot water extracts were determined in six shellfishes such as corb shell(CS). short neck clam(SNC). taste clam(TC), ark shell(AS). top shell(TS) and oyster(OY) from the western coast of Korea. Yields of shells in shellfishes were 70.I~80.5% but yields of TC was the lowest as 40.7%. The highest among weight of the shell the shellfishes was the TS(26.2g) and the lowest weight was TC(5.6g) Colors of CS, SNC, TC. AS. TS and OY were yellowish brown, brown, black. greenish brown and gray. respectively. Ca content of the shell of shellfishes was 36.23~38.78% and the content of K and Na were 0.23~4.54% and 1.48~l.59%, respectively. Contents of Na, Mg, Fe. Mn, Zn, Cu. P and S were in the range of 0.01~0.21%. It also contained heavy metals, such as Pb(1.90~7.75 ppm), Cd(0.5~4.50 ppm), As (1.40~4.30 ppm), Se (0.2~l.50 ppm). Cr(1.00~8.30 ppm) and Hg(0.002~8.2 ppm), Ca content in hot water extracts of shell of shellfish was the highest in TC(2,448 mg/100 g), and the lowest in SNC(115 mg/100 g). K content in TC extracts was the highest with the levels of 952 mg/100 g. P content of TC and SNC were 201 and 0.36 mg/100 g, respectively. The contents of Pb, As, Se and Cr were the highest in the extracts of TC and were 110. 40. 90, 20 $\mu$g/100 g, respectively. But Cd was not detected in the extracts of SNC.

Results from previous studies revealed that metal level in the body is related to certain types of diseases. For example. serum copper level with chronic heart failure, iron and transferrin in the blood serum with acute cerebral vascular diseases, Zn in the CNS, lead with neurotoxicity, hypertension, genetic damage, arsenic with cancer skin lesion, Al with neurobehavioral function (cognitive impairment and memory disorder), and etc. The rate of stroke has increased in recent years and several metals were found to be responsible for causing stroke. This study compared several blood metal concentrations between stroke and non-stroke patients. Patients with stroke (116 samples) and non-stroke (111 samples including lowback pain and others) participated in this study. Total of 227 blood samples were collected and participants completed questionnaires regarding age, gender, occupation, residence, alcohol, smoking, and etc. To be qualified into the stroke group, patients have never experienced stroke previously. Subjects only included ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage patients diagnosed by brain CT and brain MRI. Patients with high risk of metal exposure such as herbal intake and job related exposure were excluded. 10ml of blood samples were analyzed by ICP-MS method at the Center of Nature and Science at Sangji University. Metal geometric mean (SD) concentrations in blood of study subjects showed higher values, 2.64-36.12%, than WHO reference values in Mn, Ni, Hg, Se, and As. Metal concentration in blood of stroke patients non-adjusted for potential confounders was higher except for Hg and also higher except for Ni in adjusted for potential confounders. Co was significantly higher in stroke patients (p=0.002) than non-stroke patients adjusted for potential confounders. Regression coefficient values of stroke patients was 0.17-8.25 in each metals. Odd ratio of stroke patients had 0.96 (Ni)-2.68 (Co) compared to non-stroke cases. This result means that Co increase of 1 raises the risk ratio of stroke by 2.86 times. Based on the results, metal concentration in blood seems to affect incidence of stroke.
