To obtain basic information required for improving grain yield of the two modified opaque-2 synthetics, which have been developed at College of Agr., Chungnam National Univ. in 1980 and named as Puyo No.2 and No.3, physical kernel characteristics of the two synthetics were fully investigated and results obtained are as follows: Puyo No.2 synthetics had a smaller kernel size with lighter weight than the Puyo No.3. The Puyo No.2 synthetics had higher kernel density than the Puyo No.3 with large Kernel size. The Puyo No.2 had kernels with heterogenous endosperm phenotypes. Some kernels had mottled patches on endosperm, while other kernels 1/2 and 1/2 phenotypes. All the modified opaque-2 synthetics had somewhat lighter endosperm weight than the normal check hybrid. The Puyo No.2 synthetics with smaller kernel size had more germ portion compared with large kernel, Puyo No.3. The Puyo No.2 had shown also typical endosperm texture when observed under microscope after cutting by glass knife. The lysine content of the Puyo No.2 was higher than those of other varieties studied. Breeding schemes to improve the yield capacity of the two modified opaue-2 synthetics were discussed.

A 15-year-old, spayed female Maltese dog weighing 2.80 kg was referred with seizure of unknown origin. At presentation, serum biochemistry showed marked hypoglycemia (46 mg/dL; reference interval [RI], 65-118 mg/dL). There were, however, no abnormalities on electrolytes, complete blood counts, urinalysis, survey radiographs, and abdominal ultrasonography. In the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test, pre-ACTH and post-ACTH cortisol concentrations were within normal reference ranges. Serum insulin level was normal and fructosamine level was slightly lower than reference ranges. The clinical signs, including seizure and collapse caused by hypoglycemia, were gradually resolved with oral administration of prednisolone (PDS) twice daily. Forty five weeks later, serum biochemistry revealed hypoglycemia with markedly increased insulin level. On abdominal ultrasonography, increased heterogenous echogenecity with hypoechoic lesion was found within pancreatic parenchyma. Based on these findings, the dog was presumptively diagnosed to insulinoma. Hypoglycemic seizure was resolved with higher dose of PDS (1 mg/kg, q12h). At 688 days after first presentation, the patient was still alive without recurrence of hypoglycemic seizure. This case describes long-term management with PDS monotherapy in a Maltese dog with insulinoma.
Background: Pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum(PA/IVS) is an anatomically heterogenous anomaly with a variety of surgical strategies possible. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the influence of right ventricular size on the early and midterm results of surgical repair of PA/IVS. Material and method: Medical records of 20 consecutive patients with PA/IVS operated on between January 1993 and August 1999 were retrospectively reviewed. There were 12 boys and 8 girls whose ages ranged from 2 days to 14.5 months (median 6 days). Their body weight ranged from 2.52kg to 9.35 kg(median 3.18kg). The preoperative Z-value of the diameter of the tricuspid valve(T-valve) was less than or -4 in 5 patients, between -4 and -2 in 1, between -2 and 0 in 7, between 0 and 2 in 6, and greater than or 2 in 1. All patients who had z-value of tricuspid valve greater than -2.05 were attempted biventricular repair(n=15) and all patients who had it smaller than -4.4 underwent systemic-pulmonary shunt operation only(n=3) or bidirectinal cavopulmonary shunt with right ventricular reconstruction(n=2). Result: Two early deaths(2/20, 10%) occurred. Both were infants who underwent transannular patch with shunt. One of these two had huge right ventricle(Z-value of tricuspid valve = 5). There were 2 late non-cardiac deaths 3 and 7 months after operations respectively. Follow-up was completed in all children at a mean of 35.3 months(range, 5 to 54 months). 10 of 11 survivors who underwent transannular patch or valvotomy with or without shunt procedure were in NYHA functional class I even though some of them had small interatrial communication or patent shunt. All three patients who had shunt procedure only at initial palliation completed Fontan procedures with no death. Two patients who underwent right ventricular outflow reconstruction with bidirectional cavopulmonary shunt were also in good condition. Conclusion: The transanular RVOT patch or valvotomy with or without systemic-pumonary shunt as an initial palliative procedure to achieve biventricular repair for the patients who had neither too small nor too large right ventricle(-2.05$\leq$Z-value of T-value of T-valve$\leq$2) could be performed at low operative risk(1/14 7.1%). Systemic-pulmonary shunt procedure and bidirectional cavopulmonary shunt procedure for the patients who had small right ventricle(Z-value of T-valve$\leq$4.4) could be also performed with low risk. But a patient with huge right atrium and ventricle(Z-value of t-valve=5) had poor operative result.

Introduction: Uterine sarcomas are a group of heterogenous and rare malignancies of the female genital tract and there is a lack of consensus on prognostic factors and optimal treatment. Objective and Methodology: To perform a retrospective evaluation of clinicopathological characteristics, prognostic factors and treatment outcomes of 93 patients with uterine sarcomas who were diagnosed and treated at 4 different centers from November 2000 to October 2010. Results: Of the 93 patients, 58.0% had leiomyosarcomas, 26.9% malignant mixed Mullerian tumors, 9.7% endometrial stromal sarcomas, and 5.4% other histological types. According to the last International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging, 43.0% were stage I, 20.4% were stage II, 22.6% were stage III and 14.0 % were stage IV. Median relapse free survival (RFS) was 20 months (95% confidence interval (CI), 12.4-27.6 months), RFS after 1, 2, 5 years were 66.6%, 44.1%, 16.5% respectively. Median overall survival (OS) was 56 months (95% CI, 22.5-89.5 months), and OS after 1, 2, 5 years was 84.7%, 78%, 49.4% respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that age ${\geq}60$ years and high grade tumor were significantly associated with poor OS and RFS; patients administered adjuvant treatment with sequential chemotherapy and radiotherapy had longer RFS time. Among patients with leiomyosarcoma, in addition to age and grade, adjuvant treatment with sequential chemotherapy and radiotherapy after surgery had significant effects on OS. Conclusion: Uterine sarcomas have poor progrosis even at early stages. Prognostic factors affecting OS were found to be age and grade.
Background: The discovery that microRNA (miRNA) regulates metastasis provide a principal molecular basis for tumor heterogeneity. A characteristic of solid tumors is their heterogenous distribution of blood vessels, with significant hypoxia occurring in regions (centers of tumor) of low blood flow. It is necessary to discover the mechanism of breast cancer metastasis in relation to the fact that there is a differential distribution of crucial microRNA in tumors from centers to edges. Methods: Breast tissues from 48 patients (32 patients with breast cancer) were classified into the high invasive and metastatic group (HIMG), low invasive and metastatic group (LIMG), and normal group. Samples were collected from both the centers and edges of all tumors. The first six specimens were detected by microRNA array, and the second ten specimens were detected by real-time qRT-PCR and Western blot analyses. Correlation analysis was performed between the miRNAs and target proteins. Results: The relative content of miR-20a and miR-20b was lower in the center of the tumor than at the edge in the LIMG, lower at the edge of the tumor than in the center in the HIMG, and lower in breast cancer tissues than in normal tissues. VEGF-A and HIF-1alpha mRNA levels were higher in the HIMG than in the LIMG, and levels were higher in both groups than in the normal group; there was no difference in mRNA levels between the edge and center of the tumor. VEGF-A and HIF-1alpha protein levels were higher in the HIMG than in the LIMG, and protein levels in both groups were higher than in the normal group; there was a significant difference in protein expression between the edge and center of the tumor. Correlation analysis showed that the key miRNAs (miR-20a and miR-20b) negatively correlated with the target proteins (VEGF-A and HIF-1alpha). Conclusions: Our data suggest that miR-20a and miR-20b are differentially distributed in breast cancer, while VEGF-A and HIF-1alpha mRNA had coincident distributions, and VEGF-A and HIF-1alpha proteins had uneven and opposing distributions to the miRNAs. It appears that one of the most important facets underlying metastatic heterogeneity is the differential distribution of miR-20a and miR-20b and their regulation of target proteins.

Due to advances in wireless communication technology and increasing demand for various types of wireless access, cellular, WLAN, and portable internet(such as WiBro and IEEE 802.16) systems are likely to be integrated into a unified wireless access system. This expectation premises the availability of multi-mode handsets and cooperative interworking of heterogenous wireless access networks allied by roaming contracts. Under such environments, a user may lie in the situation where more than one wireless accesses are available at his/her location, and he/she will want to choose the 'best' access among them. In this paper, we define the 'best' access(es) as the access(es) that charges minimum cost while fulfilling the required QoS of wireless access, and address the problem of choosing the optimal set of accesses theoretically by introducing a graph representation of service environment. Two optimal selection algorithms are proposed, which individually consider cases where single or multiple wireless access can be supported by multi-mode handsets.

Chronic acquired hepatocerebral degeneration(CAHD) is a heterogenous that can occur with a primary neurologic, hepatic, or combined presentation. Symptoms and signs of that included progressive dementia, dysarthria, involuntary movements(including tremor, asterixis, and choreoathetosis), ataxia of limb and gait, typically in a patient with chronic liver cirrhosis. Characteristic radiologic findings is high signal on globus pallidus on T1W1 MRI. Recently, we experienced a patients, a 73-year-old female with CAHD presenting mental change, cognitive deficits, and various involuntary movement. In our patient, T1 weighted MRI of the brain showed symmetric high signal intensity in both basal ganglia. Increased ammonia $level(226{\mu}g/dl)$ in whole blood and a multiple anomalous vessels with spleno-renal shunt on abdominal CT were found. But, liver cirrhosis is absent. In admission care, these mental change and involuntary movements had a good response to herbal medication. We report on patient with CAHD which had a spontaneous spleno-renal shunt without liver disease.
To diagnosis and understand the pathophysiologic status of thyroid disease, not only hormonal measurments but also thyroid scan is believed to have a unique role. Especially in the cases of the change of the thyroid function by thyroiditis, it is emphasized that thyroid scan can be helpful in differential diagnosis. Discordant results of thyroid hormone levels and thyroid scan are found in transient hyperthyroidism, or in transient hypothyroidism. We analysed and reevaluated thyroid scan to look at the importance of thyroid scan. The results are summerised as folows: 1) 80% of hyperthyroid patients had hyperthyroidism increased RAIU with even density. they are compatible with Graves' disease. 2) 2.1% of hyperthyroid patients had normal or decreased RAIU, which are classfied as high iodine turn over genuine hyperthyroidism. 3) 8.5% of hyperthyroid patients had markedly decreased RAIU at both 2 hour and 24 hour, whose patholgic processes are suggested to be heterogenous namely subacute thyroiditis, postpartum thyroiditis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and painless thyroiditis. 4) 45% of hypothyroid patients had increased 24hr RAIU, 30% of hypothyroid patients were normal, 25%, decreased. In conclusion, thyroid scan should be reevaluated its useful role to asses the pathophysiologic status of thyroid disease. Especially in cases of transient thyrotoxicosis, thyroid scan is essential to diagnose and follow up the disease process.
The present study was performed to investigate the distribution of neuropeptide Y immunoreactivities in the corpus striatum of the Korean squirrels. The animals were perfused with 4%-paraformaldehyde and the brain was cut serially into $40{\mu}m$ thick coronal sections. Sections either were stained with cresyl violet or were stained immunohistochemically. The corpus striatum was divided into the caudate nucleus, putamen and globus pallidus. Anterior part. however, of the striatum was observed as the combined caudate-putamen. NPY immunoreactive (NPY-IR) neurons were medium-sized. The corpus striatum contained a low level of NPY-IR fibers, whose distribution appeared to be related to the immunoreactive perikarya. Large numbers of NPY-IR neurons in the caudate-putamen and caudate nucleus were expressed in medial and ventral parts. In the anterior part of the putamen NPY-IR neurons were scattered throughout the nucleus; in posterior part were found generally in the lateral and ventral parts. The density of NPY-IR fibers of the putamen were low, whose distribution appeared to be related to the perikarya. The globus pallidus contained NPY-IR fibers only in the lowest density. In brief, NPY-immunoreactivities in the corpus striatum are heterogenous in distribution. These findings may reflect innate characteristics of the specific neural circuit in the corpus striatum itself.
Mast cells (MCs) are granulated cells that play a pivotal role in allergic reaction and inflammation. The granules of mast cells are known to be rich in zinc (Zn). Male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. We injected $200{\mu}L$ of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) subcutaneously in the dorsal aspect of one hindpaw Finally, zinc selenium autometallography(AMG) was done by Danscher's method. The present study showed the ultrastructures of zinc-containing mast cells found in inflammatory area following an complete freund's adjuvant (CFA) inoculation into the rat hindpaw. At light microscopic level, mast cells were round or oval, at average $12{\mu}m$ in diameter, with many filopodia extending from the cell surface. Because the rather small and spherical nucleus was centrally placed; it was frequently obscured by the cytoplasmic granules, it sometimes could not be seen. Mast cells were distributed chiefly in the vicinity of small blood vessels. In most preparation many mast cells were ruptured and their granules escaped into the surrounding tissue. In electron micrographs, The secretory granules were at average $0.5{\mu}m$ in diameter and were limited by a membrane. The cell surface contained numerous microvilli and folds. Their interior was heterogenous in appearance. The nucleus was surrounded by large numbers of prominent vesicels and a well developed Golgi apparatus, but scant endoplasmic reticulum.
