  • We propose a general framework for studying resource allocation problem and the tradeoff between spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) for downlink traffic in power domain-non-orthogonal multiple access (PD-NOMA) and device to device (D2D) based heterogeneous cloud radio access networks (H-CRANs) under imperfect channel state information (CSI). The aim is jointly optimize radio remote head (RRH) selection, spectrum allocation and power control, which is formulated as a multi-objective optimization (MOO) problem that can be solved with weighted Tchebycheff method. We propose a low-complexity algorithm to solve user association, spectrum allocation and power coordination separately. We first compute the CSI for RRHs. Then we study allocating the cell users (CUs) and D2D groups to different subchannels by constructing a bipartite graph and Hungrarian algorithm. To solve the power control and EE-SE tradeoff problems, we decompose the target function into two subproblems. Then, we utilize successive convex program approach to lower the computational complexity. Moreover, we use Lagrangian method and KKT conditions to find the global optimum with low complexity, and get a fast convergence by subgradient method. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that by using PD-NOMA technique and H-CRAN with D2D communications, the system gets good EE-SE tradeoff performance.

  • This work presents a comparative study of four Double Gate tunnel FET (DG-TFET) architectures: conventional p-i-n DG-TFET, p-n-p-n DG-TFET, a gate dielectric engineered Heterogate (HG) p-i-n DG-TFET and a new device architecture with the merits of both Hetero Gate and p-n-p-n, i.e. HG p-n-p-n DG-TFET. It has been shown that, the problem of high gate capacitance along with low ON current for a p-i-n TFET, which severely hampers the circuit performance of TFET can be overcome by using a p-n-p-n TFET with a dielectric engineered Hetero-gate architecture (i.e. HG p-n-p-n). P-n-p-n architecture improves the ON current and the heterogeneous dielectric helps in reducing the gate capacitance and suppressing the ambipolar behavior. Moreover, the HG architecture does not degrade the output characteristics, unlike the gate drain underlap architecture, and effectively reduces the gate capacitance.

  • For smart mobile devices, the wireless communication module is one of the hardware modules that consume the most energy. If we can build a multi-channel multi-interface environment using heterogeneous communication modules and operate them dynamically, data transmission performance can be highly improved by increasing the parallelism. Also, because these heterogeneous modules have different data rates, transmission ranges, and power consumption, we can save energy by exploiting a power efficient and low speed wireless interface module to transmit/receive sporadic small data. In this paper, we propose a power efficient data transmission method using heterogeneous communication networks. We also compared the performance of our proposed scheme to a conventional scheme, and proved that our proposed scheme can save energy while guaranteeing reasonable data delivery time.

  • Purpose: Focused ultrasound is an emerging technology for treating the brain locally in a noninvasive manner. In this study, we have investigated the influence of skull properties on simulating transcranial pressure field. Methods: A 3D computational model of transcranial focused ultrasound was constructed using female and male CT data to solve for intracranial pressure. For heterogeneous model, the acoustic properties were calculated from CT Hounsfield units based on a porosity. The homogeneous model assigned constant acoustic properties for the single-layered skull. Results: A computational model was validated against empirical data. The homogeneous models were then compared with the heterogeneous model, resulted in 10.87% and 7.19% differences in peak pressure for female and male models respectively. For the focal volume, homogeneous model demonstrated more than 94% overlap compared with the heterogeneous model. Conclusion: Homogeneous model can be constructed using MR images that are commonly used for the segmentation of the skull. We propose the possibility of the homogeneous model for the simulating transcranial pressure field owing to comparable focal volume between homogeneous model and heterogeneous model.

  • In this paper, we review studies attempting to triumph over the limitation of Si-based semiconductor technologies through a heterogeneous integration of high mobility compound semiconductors on a Si substrate, and the co-integration of electronic and/or optical devices. Many studies have been conducted on the heterogeneous integration of various materials to overcome the Si semiconductor performance and obtain multi-purpose functional devices. On the other hand, many research groups have invented device fusion technologies of electrical and optical devices on a Si substrate. They have co-integrated Si-based CMOS and InGaAs-based optical devices, and Ge-based electrical and optical devices. In addition, chip and wafer bonding techniques through TSV and TOV have been introduced for the co-integration of electrical and optical devices. Such intensive studies will continue to overcome the device-scaling limitation and short-channel effects of a MOS transistor that Si devices have faced using a heterogeneous integration of Si and a high mobility compound semiconductor on the same chip and/or wafer.

  • Heterogeneous computing is a technology that utilizes different types of processors to perform parallel processing. It maximizes task processing and energy efficiency by leveraging various computing resources such as CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs. On the other hand, edge computing has developed with IoT and 5G technologies. It is a distributed computing that utilizes computing resources close to clients, thereby offloading the central server. It has evolved to intelligent edge computing combined with artificial intelligence. Intelligent edge computing enables total data processing, such as context awareness, prediction, control, and simple processing for the data collected on the edge. If heterogeneous computing can be successfully applied in the edge, it is expected to maximize job processing efficiency while minimizing dependence on the central server. In this paper, experiments were conducted to verify the feasibility of various parallel programming models on high-end and low-end edge devices by using benchmark applications. We analyzed the performance of five parallel programming models on the Raspberry Pi 4 and Jetson Orin Nano as low-end and high-end devices, respectively. In the experiment, OpenACC showed the best performance on the low-end edge device and OpenSYCL on the high-end device due to the stability and optimization of system libraries.

  • Recently, IoT can provide a service considering user's convenience by configuring the inside of the home as a smart environment. However, the existing system can not change the configuration of the home smart environment by the user, and there is a problem in compatibility between the server and the heterogeneous device. In this paper, we propose a system to reconfigure the relationship between the device and the server in the smart home environment to solve that. In a smart home environment, The user can add and delete devices through the application. In addition, when a new device is added, the server searches the schema for the device and establishes an automatic relationship. This makes it possible for the user to easily change the configuration of the smart home environment.

  • The objective of cache is to reduce I/O access of physical storage device so that user accesses their data faster. Traditionally, the most important metric to measure the performance of cache is hitratio. Thus, when the cache maintains hitratio high, it is regarded as a good cache replacement policy. However, the cache miss latency is different when the storages are heterogeneous. Though the cache hitratio is high, if the cache often misses with low performance disk, then the user experiences low performance. To address this problem we proposed eviction cost estimation based cache management. In our result, the eviction cost estimation based cache management has 10~30% throughput improvement compared with LRU cache management.
