Studies on Damage Properties of MgO-C Refractories through Hertzian Indentation at Room and High Temperatures

  • MgO-C refractories are used in basic furnaces and steel ladles due to their many desirable properties, such as excellent thermal shock resistance via low thermal expansion, and high thermal conductivity. However, the mechanical and thermal properties of the refractory continuously deteriorate by spalling phenomena and pore generation due to the oxidation of graphite, used as a carbon source, indicating that the characteristics and performance of MgO-C refractories need to be improved by using a new material or composition. In this study, the use of a Hertzian indentation test as a method for determining the damage and fracture behavior of an MgO-C refractory is described. The results highlight that Hertzain indentation tests can be one of the important evaluation tools for quasi-plastic damage accumulation of MgO-C refractories during falling process of scrap metal.

  • 본 연구에서는 전보에서 수행한 이론해석의 결과를 실험결과에 적용하여 세라 믹의 마멸형태를 파괴역학적 견지에서 고찰하고, 새로운 세라믹의 마멸이론과 마멸평 가를 위한 파라메타를 제안하고자 한다.

인공치아용 세라믹 임플란트 상부구조물의 반복하중 피로특성 (Hertzian contact fatigue of dental ceramic implant abutment)

  • 유사구강 분위기인 인공타액 조건하에서 인공치아용 상부구조물 재료 중 하나인 3Y-TZP를 500~3000 N의 하중 조건으로 $10^6$ 횟수까지 헤르찌안 반복하중을 가하여 그 피로특성을 압입손상과 강도저하현상으로 관찰하였다. 500 N의 하중에서 $5\times10^5$ 반복 횟수까지 피로실험결과, 강도저하 및 균열현상은 관찰되지는 않았지만 반복하중 값이 증가함에 따라 링 균열에서 방사상 균열로 전이되었을 때 급격한 강도 저하현상이 관찰되었다. 또한 강도 저하 현상은 유사 구강분위기하에서 반복 하중 접촉시 발생한 균열을 통해 침투한 인공타액의 화학적 침식으로 가속화 되었다.

  • Effect of elastic/plastic mismatch on the fracture of Si3N4 coating in Si3N4/Si3N4 -BN bilayer was investigated by Hertzian indentation testing. A different amount of mismatch between two layers was induced by different BN addition in the substrate layer, and Hertizian cracks were induced by using WC ball indenter. As a result, as the elastic/plastic mismatch between coating and substrate layer increased, the coating fracture easily occurred. A bending stress induced by different elastic/plastic mismatch was main reason to cause the fracture of coating.

  • Mechanical properties of polycrystalline{{{{ {Ti }_{3 }{SiC}_{2 } }} were investigated. Hertzian indentation test using a spher-ical indenter was used to study elastic and plastic behavior in{{{{ {Ti }_{3 }{SiC}_{2 } }} A high ratio of hardness to elastic mo-dulus indicated that mechanical properties of{{{{ {Ti }_{3 }{SiC}_{2 } }} are somehow similar to those of metals. Indentation stress-strain curve deviated from an ideal elastic limit indicating exceptional plasticity in this material. De-formation zones were formed below the contact as well as around the contact area. Intragrain slip would ac-count for high plasticity.

  • 본 논문에서는 PDP 시스템에서의 새로운 EMI(전자파) 예측 방법을 제시한다. AC PDP 시스템을 정확하게 기술할 수 있는 새로운 AC PDP 셀 회로 모델을 개발하였다. 개발한 모델과 Hertzian 다이폴 안테나 모델을 결합하여 PDP 시스템에서 방출되는 EMI를 정량적으로 계산하였다. 시뮬레이션 결과는 테스트 패널을 이용한 실험을 통하여 검증되었다. AC PDP 시스템은 CISPR 13에 준거하여 반 무반향실에서 30㎒∼300㎒의 주파수 대역에서 측정하였다. 따라서 제시된 EMI 예측방법은 EMI와 관련한 PDP 시스템 설계에 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.

  • Mechanical properties of two types of polycrystlline {{{{ { { Ti}_{3 }SiC }_{2 } }} with different grain size were investigated. A fine grain {{{{ { { Ti}_{3 }SiC }_{2 } }} has a higher fracture strength and hardness. Plot of strength versus Vickers indentation load indicated that {{{{ { { Ti}_{3 }SiC }_{2 } }} has a high flaw tolerance. Hertzian indentation test using a spherical indenter was used to study elastic and plastic behavior in {{{{ { { Ti}_{3 }SiC }_{2 } }}. Indentation stress-strain curves of each material are made to evaluate the plasticity of {{{{ { { Ti}_{3 }SiC }_{2 } }} Both find and coarse grain {{{{ { { Ti}_{3 }SiC }_{2 } }} showed high plasticity. In-dentation stress-strain curve of coarse grain {{{{ { { Ti}_{3 }SiC }_{2 } }} deviated even more from an ideal elastic limit in-dicating exceptional plasticity in this material. Deformation zones were formed below the contact as well as around the contact area in both materials but the size of deformation zone in coarse grain {{{{ { { Ti}_{3 }SiC }_{2 } }} was much larger than that in fine grain {{{{ { { Ti}_{3 }SiC }_{2 } }} Intragrain slip and kink would account for high plasticity. Plastic behavior of {{{{ { { Ti}_{3 }SiC }_{2 } }} was strongly influenced by grain size.

  • Tappet is the part which consists of valve train system in Over Head Valve type diesel engine. The role of tappet is to open and close the intake/exhaust valve by rotating with cam. There are wear problems like scuffing or pitting in cam/tappet system because of the higher Hertzian contact stress and sliding wear characteristics between cam and tappet. In this paper, to find optimal materials combination in cam/tappet system, wear test and rig test were performed. $Si_3N_4$, chilled cast iron, sintered alloy were selected for tappet materials. As the result of test, it is found that $Si_3N_4$ tappet has the excellent wear properties.

  • A new EMI estimation technique concerned with a PDP system is presented. A physical circuit model is developed which can fairly well describe the AC-PDP system. Then EMIs are determined by exploiting Hertzian dipole antenna model. The simulation results are experimentally verified with the test panel. The AC PDP system was measured in the frequency range of 30MHz ~ 300MHz in a semi-anechoic chamber, according to CISPR 13 code. Thereby, it is shown that the proposed technique can be usefully employed for EMI reduction.

  • Urethane is a high polymeric and elastic material useful in designing mechanic parts that cannot be molded in rubber or plastic material. Especially, urethane is high in mechanical strength and anti-abrasive. Hereby, an urethane coated aluminum wheel is used for supporting of OHT vehicle moving back and forth to transport products. For the sake of verifying the safety of the vehicle, structural safety for applied maximum dynamic load on a urethane wheel needs to be carefully examined while driving. Therefore, we have performed the dynamic simulation on the OHT vehicle model. Although the area definition of applied load can be obtained from the previous study of Hertzian and Non-Hertzian contact force model when having exact properties of contact material, static analysis is simulated, since the proper material properties of urethane have not been guaranteed, after we have performed the actual contact area test for each load. In case of this study, the method of distributing load for each node is included. Finally, in comparison with result of analysis and load-displacement curve obtained from the compression test, we have defined the material properties of urethane. In the analysis, we have verified the safety of the wheel. After all, we have performed a mode analysis using the obtained material properties. With the result, we have the reliable finite element model.
