A numerical procedure for contact analysis and calculating subsurface stress was developed. The procedure takes the advantage of signal processing technique in frequency domain to achieve shorter computing time. Boussinesq's equation was adopted as a response function in contact analysis. The validity of this procedure was proved by comparing the numerical results with the exact solutions. The fastness of this procedure was also compared with other algorithm.
In this study, a numerical procedure to solve a contact problem has been developed. The procedure takes the advantage of signal processing technique in frequency domain to achieve the shorter computer processing time. The Boussinesq's equation was adopted as the response function. This procedure is applicable to the non-periodic surface profile as well as the periodic one. The validity of this procedure has been established by comparing the numerical results with the exact solutions. The effectiveness of this procedure is lied on the shorter computing time than any other contact analysis algorithm.
An analytical method has been developed to estimate the dynamic contact force between wheel and rail when trains are running on rail with vertical irregularities. In this method, the effect of Hertzian deformation at the contact point is considered as a linearized spring and the wheel is considered as an sprung mass. The rail is modelled as a discretely-supported Timoshenko beam, and the periodic structure theory was adopted to obtain the driving-point receptance. As an example, the dynamic contact force for a typical wheel/rail system was analysed by the method developed in this research and the dynamic characteristics of the system was also discussed. It is revealed that discretely-supported Timoshenko beam model should be used instead of the previously used continuously-supported model or discretelysupported Euler beam model, for the frequency range above several hundred hertz.
Contact between solid surfaces is one of the most important factors that influence dynamic behavior in micro/nanoscale. Although numerous theories and experimental results on contact behavior have been proposed, a thorough investigation for nanomaterials is still not available owing to technical difficulties. Therefore, molecular dynamics simulation was performed to investigate the contact behavior of nanomaterials, and the application of conventional contact theories to nanoscale was assessed in this work. Particularly, the contact characteristics of cylindrical nanowires were examined via simulation and contact theories. For theoretical analysis, various contact models were utilized and work of adhesion, Hamaker constant and elastic modulus those are required for calculation of the models were obtained from both indentation simulation and tensile simulation. The contact area of the cylindrical nanowire was assessed directly through molecular dynamics simulation and compared with the results obtained from the theories. Determination of the contact area of the nanowires was carried out via simulation by counting each atom, which is within the equilibrium length. The results of the simulation and theoretical calculations were compared, and it was estimated that the discrepancy in the results calculated between the simulation and the theories was less than 10 except in the case of the smallest nanowires. As the result, it was revealed that contact models can be effectively utilized to assess the contact area of nanomaterials.
Effect of elastic/plastic mismatch on the fracture of Si3N4 coating in Si3N4/Si3N4 -BN bilayer was investigated by Hertzian indentation testing. A different amount of mismatch between two layers was induced by different BN addition in the substrate layer, and Hertizian cracks were induced by using WC ball indenter. As a result, as the elastic/plastic mismatch between coating and substrate layer increased, the coating fracture easily occurred. A bending stress induced by different elastic/plastic mismatch was main reason to cause the fracture of coating.
Hertzian indentation tests with sphere indenters were used to study the mechanical properties of glass-in-filtrated alumina and spinel composites and evaluated the effect of preform microstructure and evaluated the effect of preform microstructure and glass con-tents on contanct damage and strength. The spinel composite showed more brittle behavior than the alumina composite which is verified from indentation stress-strain curve cone cracks and quasi-plastic deformation developed at subsurface. Failure originated from either cone cracks(brittle mode) or deformation zone(quasi-plastic mode) above critical load for cracking(Pc) and yield ({{{{ {P }_{Y } }}) with the brittle mode more dominant in the spinels and the quasi-plastic mode more dominant in the aluminas. Even though brittle mode was dominant in the spinel composites the strength degradation from accumulation of damage above these critical loads was conspicuously small suggesting that the glass-infiltrated composites should be highly damage tolerant to the blunt contacts.

Using a low viscosity synthetic traction oil and a low viscosity mineral oil with nearly equal viscosity grade of ISO VG 32, the effect of kind of oil on the fatigue life of bearing steel rollers was examined. A pair of rollers finished the contact surfaces to a mirror-like condition were driven under rolling with sliding conditions of s = -3.2% and a maximum Hertzian stress in the range of $P_H=2.8GPa{\sim}4.0GPa$ was applied in point contact condition. As a result of experiments, the fatigue life with a mineral oil was longer than that with a traction oil under higher stress conditions above $P_H=3.4GPa$. Based on the numerical calculation results of the thermal EHL which simulates the present experiment, the authors discuss the reason why such a difference in the fatigue life comes out.
The role of elastic/plastic mismatch on the contact crack initiation is investigated for designing desirable surface-coated asymmetric layered composites. Various layered composites such as $Si_3N_4$ ceramics on $Si_3N_4+BN$ composite, soda-lime glass on various substrates with different elastic modulus for the analysis. Spherical indentation is conducted for producing contact cracks from the surface or interface between the coating and the substrate layer. A finite element analysis of the stress fields in the loaded layer composites enables a direct correlation between the damage patterns and the stress distributions. Implications of these conclusions concerning the design of asymmetric layered composites indicate that the elastic modulus mismatch is one of the important parameter for designing layered composite to prevent the initiation of contact cracks.
It is important to have exact informations on the real contact mechanism between spheres and rough plates under various normal loads, sphere diameters and combined surface roughnesses. Most previous papers have proposed the questions of the errors which might be incurred when the Hertzian theory is used to calculated the contact deformation and the contact pressure of practical higher pair. So, this study investigates the real contact deformation between a rough sphere and a rough plate by three experimental methods far from any assumptions and theorems. The soot coating method among them is used successfully. Accordingly, this study presents the simple dimensionless parameter to predict such errors to occur in the design of high pair members and to govern the real mechanism of two-body higher pair.
