A gas turbine blade with thermal barrier ceramic coating is operated at high temperature to increase engine efficiency. Recently, thermal barrier characteristics have been improved by advanced coating technology through microstructure control and increase of adhesion force of the coating layer. More advanced coating materials, rare earth zircon ate ceramics have been studied for replacing YSZ coatings as thermal barrier coatings. In this study, $La_2O_3,\;HfO_2,\;CeO_2,\;Gd_2O_3$ and pure or yttria stabilized zirconia were prepared. Microstructure analysis and the evaluation of mechanical properties such as Hertzian indentation and hardness test were performed.
It is important to have exact information about the contact pressure distribution in the design of connected parts of machines and structures. In previous works, stress analyses on a two body contact problem have been carried out in large numbers. Besides, the measurement of contact stress is important to confirm the adequateness of the theoretical analysis, to verify appropriateness of Hertzian contact theory and to know the practical pressure distribution, but an excellent measuring method con't be found at present. Therefore, a quantitative measurement of contact pressure by means of ultrasonic waves using a normal probe and an angle has been proposed to measure the contact pressure distribution between two rough flat surfaces. At first, in a new proposed calibration method, the relation between mean contact pressure and sound pressure of reflected waves is obtained by using calibration blocks with various surface roughnesses made of the same material as the rectangular section beams And then, this experimental results are compared with the analytical ones, and the utility of this method is discussed.
It is very difficult to analyze the dynamic characteristic because tilting vehicle is a very complex system which are connected various mass element with tilting system. To realize and analyze actual phenomenon has restriction that usual commercial software calculates creep force under creep theory about wheel -rail contact mechanism as basic analyzing, and approach about contact point are based on two dimensional non-linear contact theory and simplified Hertzian contact which considers just displacement change on the YZ plain. Therefore, to solve these problems there should be a new approach difference with existing one. In this research, a new algorithm for finding wheel-rail contact position, calculation method of contact force and applied force will be presented.
In this study, we investigated the mechanical behaviors of layered thermal barrier coatings by indentations. Various single and double-layered thermal barrier coatings were deposited by air plasma spray process using different type of commercialized YSZ (Yttria stabilized zirconia) starting powders. Indentation stress-strain curve, load-displacement curve and hardness of the single and the double-layered thermal barrier coatings were obtained experimentally and analyzed. The indentation damages at the same loads were compared, and thus, the results depend on the structure of each coating. The result indicates improvement in damage resistances from tailoring of layered structures in the component of gas turbine system is expected.

The electric contact resistance between ball and disk was measured to estimate the real area of contact under dry and lubrication conditions. The results from the measured constriction resistance using the hypothesis of a single circular contact was compared with those of Hertzian contact theory and hardness. The resistance correlated well with the asperity contact area and friction when the ball slides on the flat disk spreaded with lubricant film. Therefore, the constriction resistance method was useful to identify the lubrication regimes with respect to various loads and speeds. The results of this work will aid in better prediction of lubrication regimes with respect to the operating conditions.
A general and efficient algorithm is proposed for the analysis of the frictionless elastic contact problems. It utilizes a simplex-type algorithm with a modified entry rule and incoporates finite element method to obtain flexibility matrices. The algorithmic solution is compared with the Hertzian solution for the contact problem between two cylinders to prove its accuracy and the contact problem between pin and piston rod is solved and compared with the numerical results of Frankavilla and Zienkiewicz to demonstrate the generality and effectiveness of the suggested algorithm. The contact problem between mating involute gear teeth at the worst load position is considered. The computed contact stress is smaller than the result of Hertz's theory applied to the contact between two kinematically equivalent discs and the contact area is larger than that of Hertz's theory.
The fracture behavior of $Si_3N_4N$, coated $Si_3N_4N$-BN composite was studied by the Hertzian indentation technique. New types of contact-induced cracks were found, and it was confirmed that these cracks have cone crack geometry. Contact damage was distributed in the substrate layer, which can absorb energy, as well as in the coating layer, so the propagation of initiated cracks in the coating layer were suppressed.

In this paper, the rolling-sliding contact problem of a layered semi-infinite solid compressed by a rigid surface is solved by finite element method based on the elasto-plastic theory. The purpose of this paper is to present the standard that is needed the later design. For this analysis, the principal parameters are layer thickness. Young's modulus ratio of layer and substrate and friction coefficient. In particular, this paper is interested in effect that layer thickness have influence upon displacement and shear and tensile stress at interface. For the layered material, the layer and the substrate behave elastic and linear-strain hardening respectively. For law friction, a relatively thin layer reduce the undesired maximum tensial stress but, for high friction, act contrary to the case of low friction.

This paper presents the fabrication procedure and the experiments for the 3-axis fine positioning stage proposed in[1]. First, the dynamic characteristics of the actuator and the stage are tested with the preload changed in order to validate the stage design specifications. Secondly, the performance of the stage is also evaluated on the accuracy associated with linear positioning, angular error, and straightness error. Experimental results show that the developed stage is accurate enough to be used for nanometer positioning. Through the analysis and experiment, the developed fine positioning stage are found to have a long stroke due to the magnetically preloaded PZT actuators, the minimum motion crosstalk due to the use of a ball contact mechanism and the compact design.

Roughness of curved surfaces finished with flexible tools depends on the tool/work contact pressure and area. In this study, non-Hertzian closely conforming elastic contact theory is employed to analyze the tool/work contact and to generate a tool path producing a constant pressure at initial contact points. Finishing experiments on curved surfaced are conducted using the tool path. For comparison, curved surface finishing is also performed along the tool path producing a constant tool/work interference depth. It is demonstrated that the tool path of constant contact pressure improves the finished surface roughness.
