Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Korean medicine treatment in a patient with Herpes Zoster (HZ) during pregnancy. Methods: During 12 days of hospitalization, a patient was treated by Korean medicine treatment such as herbal medicine including Gami-danggui-san, acupuncture, cupping and fumigation. To evaluate the effect of treatment, we took pictures of skin lesion and symptoms were measured by Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ) and 36 item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). Results: After Korean medicine treatment, most of vesicles disappeared. NRS of chief complaints such as neuralgic pain and itchness changed 7-8 to 0 and therefore, quality of life of the patient was elevated sharply. Conclusions: This case shows that Korean medicine treatment is beneficial and safe for the patients who suffered from Herpes Zoster during pregnancy.

Objectives : The aim of this study is to report the effect of Korean-western combination treatment in two patients with Herpes Zoster. Methods : During hospitalization, two patients were treated with Galgeunkilkyung-tang, acupucture, pharmacopuncture, antiviral agents, painkiller. To evaluate the effect of this treatment, we used Numeric Ration Scale(NRS) and Quality of Sleep(QSP). Results : After treatment, NRS and QSP of 2 patients were improved remarkably. Conclusions : According to the result, these finding suggest that Korean-western combination treatment can be effective for the treatment of herpes zoster.

Objectives Post-herpetic neuralgia(PHN) is one of the common complications in patients diagnosed with herpes zoster. The purpose of this case study is to suggest the effect of Galgunhaegui-tang and korean medicine treatment for post-herpetic neuralgia patient. Methods A 62-year-old Herpes Zoster patient suffered from rash with post-herpectic neuralgia was identified as Taeeumin Gansuyolriyolbyong. The patient's chief complaint was assessed by counting the number of oral analgesics taken and using Visual Analog Scale(VAS) score. The patient was treated with Galgunhaegui-tang and Korean medicine treatment. Results After 9 days of admission treatment including Galgunhaegui-tang, VAS of PHN was decreased from 7.5 to 4 and the number of taking oral analgesic was decreased from 2 to 1. Conclusions This case study indicates that Galgunhaegui-tang and Korean medicine treatment may improve the pain of PHN.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Korean-Western medicine combination treatment administered to two patients with acute herpes zoster. Methods : During hospitalization, the two patients were treated with Hyeonggaeyeongyotang-gagam, Hwangryunhaedok-tang wet dressing, pharmacopuncture, acupuncture, and other western medications including antiviral and analgesic agents. Photographs of skin lesions, numeric rating scale(NRS), and visual analog scale(VAS) were used to assess the improvement of symptoms. Results : At the time of discharge, both patients showed remarkable improvement in skin lesions, NRS for pain, and VAS for pruritus and insomnia. Conclusions : The results demonstrated that Korean-Western medicine combination treatment may be effective for treating herpes zoster.

An attractive target for anti-herpes chemotherapy is the herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) protease encoded by the UL26 gene. HSV-1 protease is essential for DNA packaging and virus maturation. To perform high throughput for potent inhibitors, the efficient production of larger amounts of highly purified enzyme and protease activity assay method must be established. In this report, expression in E. coli and purification of the protease gene of HSV-1 strain F was investigated. The protease gene was cloned pET28, and the nucleotide sequence of protease catalytic domain of HSV-1 compared strain F with other strains (KOS and CL101). In these results the F strain was different in base sequence. However, the amino acid sequence was identifical. The HSV-1 protease was purified with His-tagged affinity column. The analysis of HSV-1 protease activity was performed by high performance liquid chromatography.

Herpes simplex is caused by viruses of the herpesvirus hominus family. HSV have four categories: type 1, 2, 6, and 8. Generally HSV-1 affects the mouth. Once infected by HSV, the person's infection is permanent. Retrograde transport through adjacent neural tissue to sensory ganglia leads to a lifelong latent infection. Recently, we treated a patient with recurrent herpes-stomatitis mimicking acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG). The results were satisfactorty so we report this case. 31 years old male patient showed sore throat, gingival ulceration, palpable both submandibular lymph node, and sulcular pus formation around posterior decayed teeth. This is the third time he has suffered from this symptom. Tentative diagnosis was acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis. Antibiotic therapy was started. But, intraoral symptom got worse in process of time. Especially ulcer of marginal gingiva got worse. Viral disease was suspected. We carried out viral cultivation. At the same time topical application of antiviral ointment (herpecid$^{(R)}$) was performed on oral ulcer unilaterally for the purpose of diagnosis and reducing pain experimentally. The next day pain was decreased dramatically on application area. Basing on the viral cultivation and clinical effect of antiviral ointment (herpecid$^{(R)}$), we have diagnosed it as a recurrent herpes-stomatitis and concluded that viral infection was major cause of disease and bacterial infection was secondary.

Objectives : There were few reports on Erysipelas, from Secondary Skin Infection after Herpes Zoster. We treated Erysipelas, from Secondary Skin Infection after Herpes Zoster with Oriental medical approach, and got a significant results. So We are reporting this case. Methods : Herb medication, acupuncture treatment were applied for treating patient`s chief symptoms (erythema, heat sensation, swelling, pain, itching and general weakness) Results : The patient was 5-year-old boy who had the symptoms caused by Erysipelas, which was caused by secondary skin infection after herpes zoster. He had erythema, heat sensation, swelling, pain, itching and general weakness. We judged him as Soyangin(少陽人), and prescribed Hyeongbangsaback-san. After he took Hyeongbangsaback-san, the symptom and general condition were improved. In this report, we want to explain the healing process and the result of the treatment of Erysipelas. Conclusions : More study about oriental treatment on Erysipelas, from Secondary Skin Infection after Herpes Zoster is needed.

Objectives : This study was designed to evaluate the effects of oriental medical treatments on the facial nerve palsy in Herpes Zoster Oticus. Methods : Subjects were 1 patients with the facial nerve palsy in Herpes Zoster Oticus. She had improved slightly still she had be gotten the medical services on inpatient states for 2 month. We gave Kamiligigepung-san to the patient 90 minutes after each meal and tried acupuncture 2 times every day. And we had evaluated the conditions of the patient using VAS, House-Brackmann Grade and Yanagihara scale. Results : After the comparison between an admission and discharge date at VAS, House-Brackmann Grade and Yanagihara scale, the facial nerve palsy of the patient had improved. Conclusions : It is effective the Kamiligigepung-san and Acupuncture on the facial nerve palsy in Herpes Zoster Oticus.

Herpes simplex virus pneumonia in immunocompromised host is difficult to diagnose with non-invasive method, and has high mortality rate. Because early diagnosis and early treatment can significantly decrease the mortality rate, the enthusiastic efforts for the early diagnosis should be done. A 41-year-old woman who took prednisolone due to mixed connective tissue disease developed gradually increasing dyspnea with radiological features of interstitial lung disease. Initially, we treated her with empirical antibiotics, but failed to improve her dyspnea. So we performed bronchoalveolar lavage and open lung biopsy. Open lung biopsy specimen showed herpes simplex virus pneumonia. Herpes simplex virus was also isolated from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. There was both clinical and radiological improvement after treatment with acyclovir for 14 days.

Herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1)의 감염에 따른 세포내 유리 칼슘농도의 변화에 대한 실험을 수행한 결과, HSV-1이 Vero 세포에 감염한 후 4시간째에 세포내 칼슘농도가 최대로 감소한 것을 알았으며 이러한 세포내 유리 칼슘농도의 감소는 감염성 바이러스의 양에 따라 커지며, 유전자 발현 억제제의 처리나 바이러스의 불활성화에 의해 극복되었다. 따라서 바이러스의 유전자발현이 세포내 유리 칼슘농도의 감소에 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한 Vero 세포에 바이러스를 감염시키고 미세소관 안정제인 taxol을 처리하여 4 시간째의 세포내 유리 칼슘농도의 감소가 극복된다는 사실로부터 바이러스이 유전자 물질의 이동에는 미세소관이 관여한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이와 같은 실험 결과로부터 Vero 세포에서 HSV-1에 의해 유도되는 세포내 유리칼슘 농도의 감소는 HSV-1 증식과 밀접한 관계를 가진다고 생각된다.
