Objectives : HERBA EPHEDRAE (HE) has been used cough and asthma for long time in korea. In the present study, we examined the effect HE on the ovalbumin (OVA)-induced airway hyper-reactivity (AHR). Methods : To examine the effect of HE on AHR, mice were sensitized with 100 mg of OVA and 1mg of alum intraperitoneally on day 0 and 14. On day 28, mice were challenged on 3 consecutive days with 3% OVA and AHR was assessed 24 h after the last challenge. To examine severity of airway hyper-reactivity, we examined eosinophil population and cytokine production in bronchoaveloar lavage fluid(BALF) and stained with hematoxylin and eosin in lung. Results : HE potently inhibited the development of airway hyper-reactivity and also reduced the number of eosinophil during OVA-induced airway hyper-reactivity. HE also inhibited cytokines production such as IL-4, IL-5, IL-13 in BALF. Furthermore, HE inhibited proliferation of eosinophil in a dose dependent manner. Conclusions : These results suggest that HE may be beneficial oriental medicine for AHR.
Objectives : This study was aimed to assess the current educational environment of herbology and the possibility of collaborative learning of herbology with another discipline. This study will present information that can be used to find the direction of further researches and can be applied to the education of herbology. Methods : An online questionnaire was developed with and sent through SurveyMonkey to 242 korean medicine college students in Korea. The questionnaire comprised questions pertaining to herbology education in Korean Medicine universities and international healthcare cooperation education. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were evaluated, and Spearman's correlation coefficients for two types of questions were evaluated. Results : Among the questions about herbology education, those regarding the necessity of learning clinical cases using herbal medicines for preventing infectious diseases were scored the highest. Students were mostly interested in the effects and indications of herbal drugs. Even students answered they did not learn about official development assistance, 79.85% students answered that they were interested in careers related with the international cooperation or willing to participate in the international cooperation. Three types of correlations showed a statistically significant correlation. Conclusions : This study suggests that herbology education about its effects and indications needs further improvement for competency-based education. Furthermore, herbology can play a critical role in competency-based education for Korean medicine students if a well-designed career program is developed for them.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the TLR-4 mediated anti-inflammatory effects of extract from Xanthii Fructus(XF) on the peritoneal macrophage. Methods : To evaluate of TLR-4 mediated inflammatory of XF, we examined NO and cytokine production in TRL-4 ligand(LPS-lipopolysacchride) induced macrophages. Furthermore, we checked molecular mechanism using western blot. Results : l.Extract from XF reduced LPS-induced Nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a), interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-12 production in peritoneal macrophages 2.Extract from XF itself does not have any cytotoxic effect.XS inhibited degradation of IkBa in the TLR-4 mediated peritoneal macrophages Conclusion : XF down-regulated TLR4 ligand(LPS)-induced NO and cytokine productions.
Objective : Patriniae Herba (PH) has long been used as a remedy for treating infectious diseases in Korea. In the present experiments, the author examined the effects of PH on the cholecystokinin-octapeptide (CCK)-induced acute pancreatitis (AP) in rats. Methods : Male Wistar rat weighing 200 to 250 g were divided into three groups. Normal untreated group, in treatment with PH group; PH (1g/kg) was administered orally, followed by $75\;{\mu}g/kg$ CCK subcutaneously three times, after 1, 3 and 5 h. This whole procedure was repeated for 5 days. In treatment with saline group, the protocol was the same as in treatment group with PH. The author determined the pancreatic weight/body weight ratio, the levels of pancreatic HSP60, HSP72 and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Methods : Repeated CCK treatment resulted in the typical laboratory and morphological changes of experimentally induced pancreatitis. PH was significantly decreased the pancreatic weight/body weight ratio in CCK-induced AP. Futhermore, the author demonstrated that PH increased HSP60 and HSP72 compared with CCK-induced AP. Additionally, the secretion of $TNF-{\alpha},\;IL-1{\beta}$ and IL-6 the levels of amylase and lipase were lower than that saline. Conclusions : These results suggest that PH may has a inhibitory effect against CCK-induced AP.
Objective : Daehwangmokdanpi-Tang (DWT) has been frequently used as a remedy for antiinflamation. To evaluate effect of acute pancreatitis by DWT, we examined the effects of DWT on the cholecystokinin-octapeptide (CCK)-induced acute pancreatitis (AP) in rats. Methods : Male Wistar rats weighing 200 to 250 g were divided into three groups. Normal untreated group, in treatment with DWT group; DWT was administered orally, followed by $75\;{\mu}g/kg$ CCK subcutaneously three times, after 1, 3 and 5 h. This whole procedure was repeated for 5 days. In treatment with saline group, the protocol was the same as in treatment group with DWT. Results : The author determined the pancreatic weight/body weight ratio, the levels of pancreatic HSP (heat shock protein)60 and HSP72 and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Repeated CCK treatment resulted in the typical laboratory and morphological changes of experimentally induced pancreatitis. DWT was significantly decreased the pancreatic weight/body weight ratio in CCK-induced AP. Futhermore, The author demonstrated that DWT increased HSP60 and HSP72 compared with CCK-induced AP. Additionally, the secretion of $IL-1{\beta}\;and\;TNF-{\alpha}$ and the levels of amylase and lipase were lower than that saline. Conclusions : These results suggested that DWT may has a protective effect against CCK-induced AP.
