  • Spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee (SONK) is a common form of osteonecrosis of the knee and mainly affects the medial condyle due to localized vascular insufficiency. We report a case of SONK in a 65-year-old woman who had severe knee pain in her left knee whichimpeded her capacityto walk beyond 10 minutes. Bilateral knee X-rays revealed degenerative osteoarthritis of both knees and magnetic resonance imaging revealed R/O SONK in the lateral aspect of the medial femoral condyle, as well as a medial meniscal posterior horn root tear, and a Grade 1 medial collateral ligament injury. She was hospitalized at Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine for 21 days and receivedcombination therapy includingacupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and herbal medicine. Patient-reported scales indicated that her pain and physical functional limitations were alleviated. Combination therapy consisting of Korean traditional medicine may bean alternative nonoperative treatment approach for patients with SONK.

But the treatment conducted on the patient admitted to the Sangji Oriental Medicine Hospital from January 9, 2001 to February 23, 2001, a significant treatment result was yielded and would like to suggest treatment plan for the future treatments. Methods : Under the assumption that Korean Bee-Venom Therapy may be affective for treating FSH Muscular Dystrophy, the following points were administered : SI10(노유), SI11(天宗), BL23(腎兪), BL26(關元兪), ST36(足三里), LI4(合谷), Liv3(太衝), SI9(肩貞). CFC(Carthami Flos;紅花 and Cervi Pantotrichum Cornu;鹿茸) herbal extract was treated on the other acupuncture points. Sa-Am(Four needle technique) Acupuncture (tonifying SI5 and ST42, sedating GB41 and ST43) was done every day. For herbal medicine, TaeEumIn ChoWiSeungChung-Tang was given based on the constitutional diagnosis. Results : After 7 weeks of treatment, a remarkable improvement was made for facial muscular movement and muscular strength of the scapular and another regions. Conclusions : 1. Significant improvement in the muscular strength for the case of FSH Muscular Dystrophy was obtained with through Korean Bee-Venom Therapy, Four needle technique, and herbal medication. 2. For progressive muscular dystrophy, it is necessary to practice muscular strength recovery exercise in conjunction with Korean Bee-Venom Therapy. 3. Although this case yielded favorable result, further observation and study must be made to concretely prove the effectiveness of Korean Bee-Venom Therapy for treating muscular dystrophies.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this case is to report the improvement after the acupuncture therapy and herbal medicine about two patients with senile oro-facial dyskinesia. Methods : We treated the patient with acupuncture therapy and herbal medicine by evaluating facial, lips, jaw and tongue expression of AIMS(Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale) and clinical symptom progress. Results : We have recently experienced two cases of senile oro-facial dyskinesia. Two patients were improved significantly through the acupuncture therapy and herbal medicine, so we report it for the better treatment. Conclusion : Oro-facial dyskinesia is stereotyped movements, consisting of smacking and pursing of the lips, lateral deviation and protrusion of the tongue, and occasionally lateral deviation and protrusion of the jaw. Spontaneous oro-facial dyskinesias occur in the elderly and had been said to result from edentulousness. Oriental medical treatment for oro-facial dyskinesia resulted in satisfactory results by diminishing the symptoms progressively during the admission periods. More research of oro-facial dyskinesia is needed.

  • Objective : Sono-acupoint (SA) therapy is a new therapeutic technique that combined with acupuncture points, herbal medicine and ultrasound therapy. This study was carried out to investigate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of sono-acupoint therapy. Methods : We performed the tail-flick test with normal rats to examine the tail-flick latency (TFL), and the Freund's adjuvant-induced arthritis rat model to examine the edema, skin temperature and serum concentration of c-reactive protein and rheumatoid factor (RF). Herbal SA (HSA) treatment was performed at bilateral Zusanli (ST36) with the hanbang-gel made of several selected herbal drugs in Sprague-Dawley rats (male, $250{\pm}30g$). General SA (GSA) treatment was performed at bilateral Zusanli (ST36) with the gel used in ultrasound therapy. In arthritis rat model, Freund's adjuvant (50mg/ml) was injected in dorsal part of right foot, and these treatments were performed after 15 days. Results : TFL was lengthened after SA treatments. Skin temperature and RF concentration that were the evidence of arthritis in rats were decreased by HSA treatment (P < 0.05). Conclusion : These results indicate that HSA has the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects in rats, and further developments will produce the advance of this new therapeutic skill.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to look into the methods of acupuncture for spastic cerebral palsy. Methods 27 cases of the clinical literature were selected from 43 studies about cerebral palsy and spastics. Theses literature were published between the January 2010 to September 2015 by using the China Academic Journal (CAJ) of China National Knoweldge Infrastructure (CNKI). Results Most studies mentioned the effect of acupuncture (scalp, general) or acupoint-injection, derma needle, warm acupoint. It was more effective with other herbal complex rehabilitation therapy such as acupuncture, physical therapy occupational therapy, rehabilitation, and the complex speech therapy than just the herbal therapy alone. Acupuncture of acupoint-injection has overall 86~96% of rehabilitation rate. The acupuncture was often used with the general acupuncture and scalp acupuncture. Commonly used major acupuncture points were sishencong (四神總), bohui (百會), yundongqu (運動區), and pinghengqu (平衡區), Li11, Li04, Gb39, St41. The main acupoint-injection points were fengchi (Gb21) and jiexi (St41). For the injection, brain actiator, astragalus injection, cerebroprotein hydrolysate, Vit B1, Vit B2 were commonly used. Conclusion Acupuncture and acupoint-injection have been shown as an effective treatment on spastic cerebral palsy. The acupuncture was used often with the general acupuncture and scalp acupuncture all together.

  • Objectives : Terminal stage cancer patient from primary hepatocellular carcinoma metastasized into lungs was administered with cultivated wild ginseng herbal acupuncture for 5 months and observed progression. Methods : Cultivated wild ginseng herbal acupuncture was administered 5 times a week at about 150cc dosage per week. Dynamic CT was taken and interpreted at a university hospital. Results : Above patient was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma and received one procedure of lobectomy and three procedures of TACE, but because of metastasis, chance of improvement was very obscure. Intensive treatment of cultivated wild ginseng herbal acupuncture five times a week for five months in association with moxibustion was done on the patient. Near elimination of the cancer cells metastasized into lungs were confirmed in terms of radiological impression through dynamic CT. Conclusion: From the results obtained in this study, cultivated wild ginseng herbal acupuncture can be an effective measure against terminal stage cancer. But this is a single case study and lack of extensive follow-up must be compensated by further researches.
