The purpose of this study was to develop the best methods to sterilize herbal medicines which is frequently used and known to have high susceptibility to microbial contamination. We used dry heat, gamma irradiation and alcohol gas treatment for sterilization, and evaluated these methods in terms of the followings; i) the efficacy of sterilization, and ii) the chemical alteration of index constituents of herbal medicines. Treatment with dry heat effectively eliminated the contaminated microorganisms, and did not significantly alter the content of berberine chloride, paeoniflorin and amygdalin in Phellodendron Bark, Peony Root and Apricot Kernel, respectively: However it seriously changed the color and morphology which are essential criteria to estimate a measure of quality of herbal medicines. Treatment with gamma irradiation showed a strong sterilizing effect, and no alteration of the content of index constituents, color and morphology: Alcohol gas treatment resulted in similar effects as those in gamma irradiation. Collectively; these results suggest that treatment with gamma irradiation or alcohol gas may be useful methods for sterilizing herbal medicines without a decrease in their microbial quality.

Objectives This study aims to find out the recent trend of the herbal medicine treatment in children's stomatitis in China, and propose better methods to treat children's stomatitis in Korea. Methods The randomized controlled trials (RCT) relevant to 'Herbal medicine treatment on children's stomatitis' were searched using China Academic Journal (CAJ). The search method we used included search formula, (SU = '口內炎' + '口腔炎' + 'stomatitis') and (SU = '儿童' + '小儿' + 'children' + 'child') from 2000 to September 2021. Results A total of 9 RCTs were selected and analyzed. All reports showed that oral administration of herbal medicine were effective and improved clinical symptoms. The most-used herbal medicine category was Heat-clearing medicine (淸熱藥). Conclusions The literatures from China have shown that herbal medicine improves children's stomatitis. These outcomes may be helpful for the treatment of children's stomatitis in Korea. However, further studies are needed to develop treatment guidelines for children's stomatitis.

Objectives: This review is aimed to figure out the effectiveness of herbal medicine for treating threatened abortion by analyzing randomized controlled trials. Methods: We searched relevant studies using seven databases including 4 domestic databases and 3 foreign databases. Data retrieval was conducted on May 18, 2022. and the papers published from January 1, 2018 to May 18, 2022 were included. The risk of bias was assessed by using Cochrane's risk of bias tool. Results: 182 studies were searched in domestic and foreign databases, and 9 studies were finally selected. Among 9 studies, the treatment group was treated with only oral herbal medicine in 4 studies and with combined treatment of herbal medicine and western medicine in 5 studies. On the other hand, the control group was treated with only western medicine. In all 9 studies, evaluation indexes in the treatment group showed more effectiveness than those of the control group, evaluation indexes were different for each study though. Conclusions: Herbal medicine was more effective for treating threatened abortion whether using it alone or combining with western medicine compared to using western medicine alone. Additional studies which include large number are needed to confirm long-term effectiveness and safety of herbal medicine treatment.

Objectives : The purpose of this review is to investigate the effect of herbal medicine treatment on cytokines and symptom improvement in patients with psoriasis. Methods : We searched four web databases for studies on psoriasis treated with herbal medicines published from 2000 to April 2023. After searching for studies, we analyzed selected studies based on inclusion criteria. Results : Seven randomized controlled trials have been found and analyzed. All of research which selected have reported that herbal medicine treatment for psoriasis patients have an effect on cytokines and was effective in improving symptoms, and all were statistically significant. Conclusions : According to the results, herbal medicine treatment can be an effective treatment for improving symptoms and cytokines in patients with psoriasis. This study will be helpful for future research in herbal medicine.

Objectives : The objective of the study was to summarize randomized clinical trials(RCTs) that have assessed the effectiveness of herbal medicine on treatment of obesity and to propose better process of study. Methods : NLM Medline(pubmed), EMBASE, the Cochrane library, Science Direct, EBSCO, 4 Korean medical databases were systematically searched and 4 Korean medical journals were manually searched for clinical trials investigating the efficacy of herbal medicines on treatment of overweight or obese people from 1998 to 2008. The methodological quality was assessed using a Jadad score and validity was assessed using Oxford Pain Validity Scale(OPVS). Results : 14 RCTs met all the inclusion criteria. The methodological and ethical quality of the trials was generally low. The mean score by Jadad was 2.6 and the mean score of validity was 11.2. Complex herbal medicine was used in 8 RCTs and single herbal medicine was used in 6 RCTs. Except 1 RCT, the other RCTs reported positive effects of herbal medicine on treatment of obesity. Herbal medicines didn't seem to affect toxicity. In general adverse events relevant with the therapy were minor, but more than half of RCTs did not report about the safety or adverse events of herbal medicine, questioning their reliability. Conclusions : Although most RCTs concluded the efficacy and safety of herbal medicines on treatment of obesity, the quality of trials was low in general. Further rigorous clinical trials using complex herbal medicine should be performed.

Background and Objectives : This case report aims to determine the effect of acupuncture and herbal medicine as a treatment for tinnitus. Subjects and Methods : 11 patients with tinnitus were treated by acupuncture combined with herbal medicine. Patients were evaluated with verbal numerical rating scale scores for loudness, annoyance, and awareness of tinnitus before and after treatment. Results : 9 patients reported reduction of loudness, annoyance, and awareness of tinnitus after treatment. Among them, complete suppression of the tinnitus was obtained in 1 case. 2 patients reported no improvement. Conclusions : This case study presents clinical possibility of acupuncture and herbal medicine for the treatment of tinnitus.

This case report details induction and maintenance of remission in a 34-year-old female patient with ulcerative colitis (UC) after Korean herbal medicine treatment. The patient diagnosed as UC after a series of examinations including endoscopy in a western medical hospital mainly presented bloody diarrhea and dyspepsia and symptoms were persistent even with medications. She was given individualized Korean herbal medicine prescriptions for 7 months and the symptoms were monitored during treatment and no adverse events were reported. After clinical remission, endoscopic remission was also confirmed by colonoscopy. Clinical remission was maintained for 30 months after treatment without Western medication for UC. This case report shows that Korean herbal medicine treatment may have the potential for complete remission of UC and further research is warranted.

The purpose of this study is to report the effects of Korean medicine treatment, especially herbal medicine on vaginitis in menopausal woman. The patient suffered from vaginitis was treated with herbal medicine such as Yongdamsagan-tang and Jibaekjihwang-tang. The effect of treatment was evaluated through questionnaire. After treatment, symptoms of vaginitis were reduced. This case report shows that herbal medicine treatment may be effective for vaginitis.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze Chinese randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the oral herbal medicine treatment for pediatric chickenpox. Methods We searched RCTs after 2000s from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Afterwards, the year of publication, demographic information, duration of chickenpox, intervention, treatment duration, outcome measure, results and adverse events were investigated and analyzed for this study. Results 21 RCTs out of 219 studies were collected and analyzed. Although each composition of the herbal medicine was different, they have common ingredients such as 清熱解毒, 散結消腫, 疏散風熱, 涼血解毒, 解表散風 in order to make efficacy of 清熱解毒, 散結消腫, 疏散風熱, 涼血解毒, 解表散風. The oral herbal medicine showed better efficacy and safety to improve clinical symptoms such as total efficacy, cure rate, antipyretic time, antipruritic time, scab time, anti-rash time, hospitalization period and herpes recovery time compared to the western medicine treatment. Conclusions These results show that the oral herbal medicine treatment on chickenpox in children may be more effective in reducing of clinical symptoms compared to the western medicine treatment.

Objectives : According to 2013 statistics, the primary infertility rate is 13.5%. The current situation is much worse than that reported, so it is even emerging as a social problem. The purpose of this study is to analyze the 5 cases of successful infertility treatment with herbal treatment and to give hope to the infertile couple to become pregnant and to suggest the possibility of herbal treatment in infertility treatment. Methods : We administered Jokyungjongok-tang gamibang as a herbal medicine and treated with acupuncture, moxibustion. Treatment was done once or twice a week. The herbal medicines were taken 30 minutes after meals and 3 times a day. While taking the herbal medicine, they were prohibited from eating flour, pork, liquor, tobacco and coffee. Patient status was assessed by consultation through pulse, tongue and abdominal diagnosis. The diagnosis of pregnancy was confirmed by ultrasonography at hospitals and the success of the treatment was judged based on healthy birth. Results : Patients had common features, such as lower abdominal pain, menstrual cramps, and blood clots during menstruation. Herbal medicine combined with acupuncture, moxibustion improved patients' overall fatigue and reduced the body's coldness. Since then, the dysmenorrhea and blood clots have decreased, and the digestion condition has improved. Therefore they became pregnant and gave birth to a healthy baby. Conclusion : Jokyungjongok-tang gamibang was effective in improving the body's coldness and uterine condition and was successful in pregnancy and helped to give birth to a healthy baby.
