  • Idopathic thrombocytopenic purpura(ITP) is the most common autoimmune hematologic disorder. The use of glucocorticoids and splenectomy have been the mainstays of treatment of ITP Some studies have shown that chinese herbal medicine treatment increase platelet count level of ITP patients. However, there is a lack of research considering oriental herbal medicine with ITP, in korea. A 33-year-old female who had diagnosed ITP on Mar 1999, was treated herbal medicine for decreased platelet count level$(34000/{\mu}l)$ that was identified on regular follow-up. this patient's platelet count level was get to normal$(139000/{\mu}l)$ by BuQiSheXue(補氣攝血) pattern herbal medicine that composed with Radix Astragali(黃?), Herba Agrimoniae(仙鶴草), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae(白朮), Radix codonopsis(黨參), etc. I report the case with a review of literature.

  • Objectives: This study aims to find out the effect of herbal medicine on sleep disorder in developmental delayed children. Methods: 2 patients were treated by herbal medicine. For the progress evaluation, we used The Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). Results: The clinical symptoms were improved after the treatment. Conclusion: This study reports that the herbal medicine improved sleep disorder in developmental delayed children, but further studies are needed to clarify the effectiveness of the treatment.

A Clinical Study on the Effect of Crossing over Treatment of Acupuncture and Herbal Medication for Primary Dysmenorrhea (침(鍼)-한약(韓藥)의 교차(交叉) 치료(治療)가 원발성(原發性) 월경통(月經痛)에 미치는 효과(效果)에 대한 연구(硏究))

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study is to identify the clinical effects of acupuncture and herbal medication in the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea during five or seven days before menstruation. Methods : This study was carried out to the 17 female students in kyungwon university without pelvic or other systemic disease and its history. We investigated general and menstrual characteristics through questionnaires and treated sample patients with crossover acupuncture treatment(Sojangjeonggyeok & $SP_6$) and herbal medication(Hyunburikyungtang-gagam) during five or seven days before menstruation two times. And the change of pain was measured by the method of VAS after menstration monthly two times. Results : The improvement frequency of pain after treatment according to VAS all got better after one, two months of treatment. Especially, the mean${\pm}$S.E. of VAS score after 2nd month treatment was decreased significantly compared with that of 1st month treatment(p<0.05). And Between acupuncture treatment and herbal medication groups had no significant differences on the efficacy of treatment. Conclusion : The acupuncture treatment or herbal medication during five or seven days before menstruation will be efficacious against primary dysmenorrhea.

Network Analysis on Herbal Combinations in Korean Medicine for Insomnia (불면 처방 활용 본초의 네트워크 분석)

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to diversify the interpretation of formulas used for insomnia treatment by searching and analyzing herbal combinations in formulas used for insomnia treatment in Korean medicine. Methods : Frequency analysis was conducted on herbal combinations of 255 formulas related with insomnia, along with network analysis using Netminer 4.2.1. Results : This study has found herbal combinations used frequently in Korean medicine formulas used for insomnia treatment, and a result of network analysis composed of four communities. Each community consisted of herbs in affiliation of Yookmijihwangtang(六味地黃湯) and Samultang(四物湯), Bohyulchunghwatang(補血淸火湯) and Ondamtang(溫膽湯), Jungjihwan(定志丸) and Sanjointang(酸棗仁湯). Conclusions : This study could help in assisting researchers to diversify formula analysis in future studies. Moreover, the herbal combination in insomnia formulas could be used to search for insomnia formulas in other databases or creating a new prescription.

Review of Clinical Research about Herbal Medicine Treatment on Recurrent Respiratory Tract Infection in Children (소아 반복성 호흡기 감염의 한약 치료에 대한 임상 연구 동향: 중의학 논문을 중심으로)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate recent clinical studies on effect of herbal medicine treatment for recurrent respiratory tract infection in children. Methods We searched some clinical studies about recurrent respiratory tract infection in children from the China Academic Journal (CAJ) of China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) (January 2011 to December 2015). Results 50 papers were selected from 168 studies. The herbal decoction was main herbal medicine treatment for recurrent respiratory tract infection in children. Commonly used herbs were Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba, Glycyrrhizae Radix, Astragali Radix, Saposhnikovia Radix and Pseudostellariae Radix. Yupingfeng keli was the most frequently used herbal compound. Total effective rate was 66.4-100%, experimental group was significantly higher than control group in 45 papers (P<0.05). Immune index (in 22 papers) and curative effect of TCM syndrome (in 7 papers) were significantly higher than those of control group after treatment (p<0.05). Conclusions Herbal medicine has been shown as an effective treatment on recurrent respiratory tract infection in children. These research results can be utilized in other clinical studies and in treatment of recurrent respiratory tract infection for children.

Review of the Recent Clinical Study Trends on Korean Medicine Treatment for Vaginitis during Pregnancy (임신 중 질염에 대한 한의학적 치료 최근 연구 동향 분석)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to review the recent clinical study trends on Korean Medicine treatment for vaginitis during pregnancy. Methods: We searched articles published from electric databases including Oasis, KISS, Pubmed, and CNKI. The period was set from 2012 to 2021. Searched keywords were "임신 중 질염", "한약", "Vaginitis during pregnancy", "Herbal medicine", "妊娠合并阴道炎", "中药". Results: 34 articles were finally selected. Except 1 case series study, there were 33 RCTs, 1 article of which used both herbal decoction and herbal fumigation for treatment group (TG) ; 18 employed herbal fumigation only, and 14 took both herbal fumigation and western medicine. The total effective rate or cure rate in TGs, regardless of treatment methods, was higher than that of control group in all RCT studies. Conclusions: Our review found that Korean medicine alone or combined with western medicine is more effective for alleviating symptoms of vaginitis during pregnancy than the control group.

Analysis of Korean Herbal Medicine Used in Case Studies of Treating Urticaria (두드러기 증례 연구에서 사용된 한약 처방 분석)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze the use of herbal medicine for the treatment of urticaria in case studies and to find the general tendency of herbal medicine treatment and to establish the primary treatment direction of urticaria. Methods : In the domestic databases, Oriental medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS), Korean Traditional Knowledge Portal (KTKP), National Discovery for Science Leader (NDSL), Research Information Sharing Service (RISS), we selected among the case study papers published in the last 20 years using search terms related to "urticaria". Reports related to Sasang Constitutional medicine were excluded and total of 15 papers were finally selected. Results : 23 prescriptions were retrieved from 15 papers. The most commonly used prescription was Seungmagalgeun-tang (升麻葛根湯), and Bangpoongtongsung-san (防風通聖散) and Pyeongwi-san (平胃散) were presented twice. Commonly used herbs are Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (甘草), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (生薑), and Scutellariae Radix (黃芩). 18 out of 78 herbs are belonging to heat-clearing medicinal (淸熱藥) and 16 out of 78 herbs are belonging to exterior-releasing medicinal (解表藥). Concurrent therapies such as acupuncture, pharmacoacupuncture, moxibustion, cupping therapy, ice pack applying therapy were performed and several evaluation methods were used, patient's subjective remission rate was the most used. Conclusions : Through this study, we were able to discover the tendency of herbal medicine prescription for the treatment of urticaria.

Clinical Study on the case of Lumbar compression fracture with Traditional Korean Medicine, Especially the SAAM Acunpture, Carthami-Flos Herbal Acupuncture (사암 어혈방과 홍화약침요법을 병행한 요추압박골절 1례에 관한 고찰)

  • There are little report on treatment of compression fracture with Traditional Korean Acupuncture Therapy. We suggest to treat Lumbar compression fracture with the SAAM(사암) Acunpture, Carthami-Flos Herbal Acupuncture Therapy. The Treatment methods of the SAAM(사암). Acnpucture, Eliminating extravasated Blood, was apllied at SP3, LU9, LI11 and Carthami-Flos Herbal Acupuncture at the waist. We treated the patient who was diagnosed as lumbar compression fracture by MRI. After 15 days of Treatment, SAAM Acupuncture and Carthami-Flos Herbal Acupuncture, a remarkable improvement was made for Lumbar compression fracture. There was reports about SAAM Acupuncture and Carthami-Flos Herbal Acupuncture of Patient with Lumbar Compression Fracture. It is very effective to reduce the pain and shortening the period of therapy.

A Review of Current Clinical Research on Herbal Monotherapy for Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of traditional herbal medicine as a stand-alone treatment group through major English databases due to the lack of RCTs in Korea, and to provide a review of the herbal interventions used. Methods: Using four databases (Pubmed, EMBASE, OASIS, RISS), combination of words such as "Coronavirus" "RCT" "Herb" "Decoction" "TCM" were used. RCTs using herbal medicines to treat coronavirus were searched. Final 4 studies were selected by two authors according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: A total of 1,435 patients were studied. The Chinese herbs used in the treatment group were Shengmai Yin, JingYinGuBiao granules, Jinhua Qinggan granules, and Bufei Huoxue capsules. The intervention group showed greater attenuation of pneumonia lesions on CT. Also, improvement in 6-min walk distance (6MWD), and negative conversion rate in treatment group were reported. Furthermore, scores on the Fatigue Assessment Inventory (FAI) were lower in the herbal group than in the placebo group. The median time to recovery of COVID-19 related symptoms was shorter in TCM group compared to the control group. Reported adverse effects were diarrhea, liver dysfunction, and excessive menstruation, and two papers did not mention side effects in detail. Conclusion: Herbal medicine alone can increase the conversion rate of viral negativity and relieve COVID-19 related symptoms without significant adverse effects.

A Philological Study on Poisoning of Mind-tranquilizing Herbal Medicines(安神藥) (안신약(安神藥)의 독성(毒性)에 관한 문헌적 고찰)

  • Objectives & Method : We investigated toxicity, poisoning symptoms, poisoning treatment and prevention against poisoning of mind-tranquilizing herbal medicines(安神藥) in order to use herbal medicines accurately. Result : Cinnabaris(朱砂), Zizyphi Spinosae Semen(酸棗仁), Polygalae Radix(遠志), Ganoderma(靈芝) and Polygoni Multiflori Ramulus(夜交藤) may give rise to some side effects or toxic symptoms in mind-tranquilizing herbal medicines(安神藥). The representative methods of poisoning treatment in western medicines are washing out the stomach, promotion of vomiting, causing diarrhea, supplies of grape sugar and symptomatic treatment, etc. The representative methods of poisoning treatment in oriental medicine take advantage of herbs. And Oriental medical doctor should meet symptoms as patients call for attention. In order to prevent against poisoning of mind-tranquilizing herbal medicines(安神藥), the patients should keep usage, dosage and notes and oriental medical doctors should do processing drugs. Conclusion : We should pay attention to clinical using of Cinnabaris(朱砂), Zizyphi Spinosae Semen(酸棗仁), Polygalae Radix(遠志), Ganoderma(靈芝) and Polygoni Multiflori Ramulus(夜交藤) in mind-tranquilizing herbal medicines(安神藥).
