Epimedii Herba is an important traditional herb medicine widely used as a tonic. However, the mechanism of action of this drug on the immune system is not well studied. This study was performed to elucidate the effects of the aqueous extract of Epimedii Herba on the production of antibodies in mice. Antibodies in serum were detected in male ICR mice treated with the aqueous extract of Eplmedii Herba (AEEH) at a dosage of 40, 120, and 360mg/kg orally for 2 weeks. Effects of oral administration of AEEH on antibody forming responses were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) of immunoglobulin (Ig) levels in serum. The results were as follows; 1. Epimedii Herba slightly decreased body weight gain. 2. Epimedii Herba significantly increased the relative spleen weight. 3. Epimedii Herba significantly increased total serum IgG levels. 4. Epimedii Herba significantly enhanced total serum IgG1 levels. 5. Epimedii Herba significantly increased total serum IgG2a levels. 6. Epimedii Herba markedly increased total serum IgM levels. These findings demonstrate that Epimedii Herba significantly enhances the production of antibodies at therapeutic concentrations, and suggest that administration of Epimedii Herba may prevent the host from immunologic diseases.
Oldenlandiae Herba has been used for the prevention or treatment of cancer in oriental medicine for years. Experimentally its antitumor activity was reported. However, in order to develop new Korean original plants. we tried to study the antitumor activity of Chinese and Korean origin Oldenlandiae Herba. We first evaluated the cytotoxicity of Oldenlandiae Herba originated from China and Korea on HT1080, U937 and SK-mel tumor cells. MeOH extract of Chinese Oldelandiae Herba was more effective than MeOH extract of Korean Oldenlandiae Herba. Approixmately IC50 of two species of Oldelandiae Herba was 380-450 ug/ml. For evaluation of antiangiogenic activity, proliferation assay with HUVECs(Human umblical vein endothelial cells) was done with three samples. Chinese Herba and Korean Herba and root. Korean root and herba was more effective than Chinese Herba. Thus, we found Korean Oldenlandiae was more effective on angigenic activity than Chiness Oldenlandiae. In an anlytical study on effective compounds from Oldenlandiae, the spot of ursolic acid was more marked by Korean Oldenlandiae than by Chinese Oldenlandiae. whereas the spot of asperuloside was more pronounced by Chinese Oldenlandiaethan by Korean Oldenlandiae by TLC analysis.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the etahnol extract of Saururus Herba and their dermal boiactivity properties related to cosmeceuticals such as depigmentation and radical scavenging effect. Methods : Using B16/F10 Melanin cells, we measured depigmentation effect of the etahnol extract of Saururus Herba. Antioxidant activities of the etahnol extract of Saururus Herba were determined by DPPH radical scavenging activity. Results : The etahnol extract of Saururus Herba showed considerable radical scavenging activity($SC_{50}$ : 25 ${\mu}g$/ml). Antioxidant activity is in a dose dependant manner. The etahnol extract of Saururus Herba down-regulated melanin synthesis effectively. B16 cells incubated with the etahnol extract of Saururus Herba showed reduces melanin formation and tyrosinase activity. The etahnol extract of Saururus Herba alone markedly suppressed melanin content and tyrosinase activity. Conclusions : The results indicate that Artermisiae Capillaris Herbapromotes expression of angiogenic factors but Curcumae Rhizoma, Loranthi Ramulus, and Orostachys Herba inhibit expression of angiogenic factors in HepG2 cells. The result is expected that Curcumae Rhizoma, Loranthi Ramulus, Orostachys Herba have an inhibitive effect of angiogenesis in HCC.
This study was undertaken to define the mechanism of Siegesbeckiae Herba-induced relaxation in rabbit common carotid artery contracted by agonists. In order to investigate the effect of Siegesbeckiae Herba on contracted rabbit carotid arterial strips, transverse strips with intact or damaged endothelium were used for the experiment using organ bath. To analyze the mechanism of Siegesbeckiae Herba-induced relaxation, Siegesbeckiae Herba extract infused into contracted arterial strips induced by agonists after treatment of lanthanum chloride, indomethacin, atropine, $N\omega-nitro-{_L}-arginine$, cobalt chloride or methylene blue. The relaxation effect of Siegesbeckiae Herba was dependent on the presence of endothelium, showing that Siegesbeckiae Herba-induced relaxation was not observed in the strips without endothelium. The endothelium-dependent relaxation induced by Siegesbeckiae Herba was suppressed by the pretreatment of lanthanum chloride, $N\omega-nitro-{_L}-arginine$, cobalt chloride or methylene blue, but it was not observed in the strips pretreated with indomethacin or atropine. These results demonstrated that Siegesbeckiae Herba may inhibit agonist-induced contraction through an increase in the cyclic GMP by the production of nitric oxide in the vascular endothelial cells.
