  • The nutritional survey and blood sampling was conducted from May 23 to 27, 1971, in order to investigate the state of the nutritional intake in relation to blood contents of rural women. This survey covered a total of 47 women residing in Youngam-gun, Cholla-namdo, Korea. The daily diet of these subjects was observed by 24-hour recall method and weighing method for 3 days and hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit(Hct), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), serum protein, serum albumin, A/G ratio, serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin saturation (TS), serum cholesterol and blood specific gravity (SG) were measured. The results were summarized as follows ; The rate of intake of vegetable foods was high, especially cereals, and that of animal foods was low, especially eggs and milk and milk products. The daily intake of niacin was sufficient, and the intakes of energy and iron were also tend to be adequate. On the contrary, the intakes of vitamin A, $B_2$ and C, calcium and protein were insufficient. The mean red blood cell number was $410.8{\pm}26.4{\times}10^{4}/mm^{3},$ the mean values of Hb, Hct and MCHC were $12.5{\pm}0.9gm%$, $37.5{\pm}2.4%$ and $33.2{\pm}0.5%$ thus the anemic prevalences were 21.3%, 12.8% and 93.6% comparing with the anemic criteria of WHO. The levels of serum protein and serum albumin were $7.1{\pm}0.4gm\;%$ and $4.3{\pm}0.3gm\;%$so the A/G ratio was indicated $1.6{\pm}0.2.$. The levels of serum iron and TIBC were $91.9{\pm}27.5{\mu}g/100ml and $297.5{\pm}31.4{\mu}g/100ml,$ so TS was calculated $31.2{\pm}9.7\;%$. The mean value of SG was $1.044{\pm}0.002,$ and the level of serum cholesterol was $164.3{\pm}25.4mg/dl$. In the relation between each of bloood content, Hb showed positive correlation not only with Hct but also protein at the level of significance of 1 per cent and 5 per cent, and protein also showed a positive correlation with serum cholesterol at the 1 per cent level of significance. In the relation between the nutrient intake and blood contents, vitamin C intake showed a positive correlation with Hb, serum protein and serum iron at the level of significance of 1 per cent, iron intake also showed a positive correlation with serum iron and serum cholesterol at the same significant level, and protein intake showed a positive correlation with serum iron at the at the level of significance of 5 per cent.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of mulberry leaf extract supplement on blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin ($HbA_{1C}$) and serum lipids in type II diabetic patients, and also to assess safety in liver function after mulberry leaf extract supplement. The study was a randomized placebo-controlled trial and total 23 type II diabetic patients were divided into a MLE group taking 1,000 mg mulberry leaf extract supplement per day as experimental group and a placebo group taking 1,000 mg cellulose Powder supplement per day for 12 weeks. After 2 weeks of wash-out period, fasting blood glucose, $HbA_{1C}$, serum lipid levels and liver function test were analyzed before and after treatment of 12 weeks. The general baseline characteristics, nutrient intake and life style factors of study subjects were similar between two groups during intervention. The concentrations of fasting blood glucose and $HbA_{1C}$ (p<0.05) decreased significantly after mulberry leaf extract supplement in MLE group, while there were no changes found in placebo group. We also found it showed that mulberry leaf extract supplement for 12 weeks decreased significantly (p<0.05) the fasting blood glucose in poor fasting blood glucose group and $HbA_{1C}$ concentration in poor $HbA_{1C}$ group. The concentrations of LDL-cholesterol (p<0.05) and triglyceride (p<0.01) decreased significantly in MLE group after 12 weeks of taking the supplement, while there were no changes found in placebo group. The mulberry leaf extract supplement for 12 weeks didn't show hepatotoxicity. These results suggested that mulberry leaf extract supplement could be effective in improving fasting blood glucose and $HbA_{1C}$ levels in the diabetic patients, specially having high concentrations of fasting blood glucose and $HbA_{1C}$ among type II diabetic patients.

  • An intravenous pharmacokinetics for a new red cell substitute, PEG-hemoglobin SB1, was studied in SD rats. Total-hemoglobin and its metabolite methemoglobin in the plasma were determined using a spectrophotometer. The limit of quantitation was 0.01g/dL and the C.V for interday assay reproducibility was less than 6%. Upon intravenous administration of anticipated clinical dose, 10 ml(0.7 gHb)/kg, plasma concentration curve of total-hemoglobin was well described by one-compartment model. The $t_{\frac{1}{2}},{\;}CL_{t}$, Vd and $AUC^{0-48hr}$ were $8.23{\pm}0.96{\;}hr,{\;}0.06{\;}{\pm}{\;}0.01 {\;}dL/hr/kg,{\;}0.66{\pm}0.05{\;}dL/lg{\;}and{\;}13.6{\;}{\pm}{\;}1.01g{\cdot}hr/dL$, respectively, in male rats(n=5, $mean{\;}{\pm}{\;}SD$). Those parameters in female rats were $9.21{\;}\pm{\;}2.31{\;}hr,{\;}0.06{\;}{\pm}{\;}0.01{\;}dL/hr/kg,{\;}0.79{\pm}{\;}0.08{\;}dL/kg{\;}and{\;}13.0{\;}{\pm}{\;}2.36{\;}g{\cdot}hr/dL$, respectively. Similar kinetic profiles between males and females were also obtained from other parameters. Small amount of methemoglobin, an oxidative metabolite of SB1, was detected in the plasma of both sexes, where the $AUC^{0-48{\;}hr,m}$ and $t_{{\frac{1}{2}},m}$ were approximately $1.5{\;}g{\cdot}hr/dL$ and 20 hr, respectively. The present work provides a critical kinetic data for the effective clinical applications of PEG-hemoglobin SB1.

  • Twelve Philippine does of 3.5-5.0 years old were used in this study. They were divided into three groups, $T_1$, $T_2$ and $T_3$. Four animals were randomly allocated to each group. Before infection, they were dewormed and housed in individual pens with concrete floors. They were provided with a uniform management. They were infected orally with a single dose of three levels (0, 15,000 and 30,000) of infective Haemonchus contortus larvae. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein of each animal at fortnightly intervals for 17 fortnights. Hemoglobin (Hb) concentration was determined using hemoglobinometer and packed cell volume (PCV) by microhematocrit methods. Animals in infected groups showed significantly (p < 0.05) lower hemoglobin values than the control except during fortnight 1 for group 2 and fortnights 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 for group 3. Hemoglobin concentration did not significantly (p > 0.05) differ between the animals in infected groups throughout the sampling period except fortnight 2. The PCV values of animals in infected groups were significantly (p < 0.05) lower than the control for most of the sampling periods. The PCV values of animals in group 2 did not significantly (p > 0.05) differ from group 3.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Acanthopanax senticosus extract (ASE) (ethanol : DW=1:1, v/v) on inhibition of type 2 diabetes using an OLETF rat model via regulation of HbA1c and AGEs levels. Supplementation with ASE 0.1% and 0.5% effectively lowered levels of glucose, insulin, oral glucose tolerance test, and Homa-insulin resistance, suggesting reduced insulin resistance. Blood levels of HbA1c and AGEs were significantly reduced in a dose-dependent manner. As oxidative stress plays a key role in accelerating production of HbA1c and AGEs, which worsen symptoms of type 2 diabetes, levels of malonaldehyde and pro-inflammatory cytokines were measured. Lipid peroxidation in both blood and liver tissues was significantly reduced, and induction of pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-${\beta}$ and tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$, which elevate production of HbA1c and AGEs, was inhibited (P<0.05). To evaluate the possible cellular events after AGEs receptor activation, genetic expression of protein kinase C (PKC)-${\delta}$ and transforming growth factor (TGF)-${\beta}$ was measured by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Supplementation with both ASE 0.1% and 0.5% significantly inhibited mRNA expression of PKC-${\delta}$ and TGF-${\beta}$, indicating that ASE may have beneficial effects on preventing insulin-resistant cells or tissues from progressing to diabetic complications. Taken together, ASE has potential to improve type 2 diabetes by inhibiting insulin resistance and protein glycosylation, including production of HbA1c and AGEs. Anti-oxidative activities of ASE are a main requisite for reducing production of HbA1c and AGEs and are also related to regulation of the PKC signaling pathway, resulting in suppression of TGF-${\beta}$, which increases synthesis of collagen, prostaglandin, and disease-related proteins.

  • To investigate the genetic polymorphisms and constitutions of blood proteins and enzymes in the Korean native cattle population of National Livestock Cooperatives Federation(NLCF), the genetic variants of transferrin(Tf), post-transferrin-2(pTf-2), albumin(Alb), post-albumin(pAlb), ceruloplasmin(Cp), amylase-I(Am-I) and herroglobin(Hb) were analyzed using the PAGE(polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) and ST AGE(starch gel electrophoresis) methods. On the genetic variants of the serum proteins, the transferrin(Tf) locus was assumed to be genetically controlled by codominant alleles, Tf A, $D_1$, $D_2$ and E alleles, and the gene frequencies of these were 0.249, 0.248, 0.260 and 0.243, respectively. The post-transferrin locus was observed to be controlled by pTf-2 F and S alleles, and the gene frequencies of these were 0.662 and 0.338, respectively. The post-albumin(pAlb) loci were identified to be controlled by two alleles, pAlb F and S alleles for pAlb locus, and the gene frequncies of these were 0.440 and 0.560 for pAlb F and S alleles, respectively. On the genetic variants of the serum enzymes, ceruloplasmin(Cp) and amylase-I(Am-I) loci were found to be controlled by two alleles, Cp F and S for Cp locus, and Am-I B and C for Am-I locus, and gene frequencies of these were 0.319 and 0.681 for Cp F and S, and 0.871 and 0.120 for Am-I Band C, respectively. On the genetic variants of the hemoglobin(Hb), the distributions of genotypes were 76.5, 21.2 and 2.3% for Hb AA, AB and BB types, and the gene frequnecies for Hb A and B were 0.871 and 0.129, respectively. On the effects of genetic variants of blood proteins, Tf $D_1D_1$, $D_2D_2$ and $D_2E$ genotypes were significantly higher on body weight at 6 month and average daily gain than that of other Tf genotypes.

  • The aim of this study was to appraise the influence of conventional periodontal treatment on metabolic control in Korean type 2 diabetic patients. In addition, their periodontal change was compared with non-diabetic patients. Before and after treatment, it was performed to measure periodontal and metabolic indices in thirteen type 2 diabetic patients. Periodontal indices included plaque index, gingival index, bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth, gingival recession, and clinical attachment level. Metabolic indices included glycated hemoglobin(HbA1c), fasting plasma glucose, fasting plasma insulin, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and HDL-cholesterol. Plaque index, gingival index, bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth, and gingival recession showed significant improvements in the statistics. Diabetic patients showed no statistically significant differences in the changes of periodontal indices compared with non-diabetic patients. HbA1c values decreased in five of the thirteen subjects and fasting plasma glucose levels were reduced in four of the seven subjects after periodontal treatment. All five subjects whom HOMA values were calculated in showed the increases of insulin secretions. The results of this study ascertained the possibility of the better glycemic contol after conventional periodontal treatment in Korean type 2 diabetic patients and diabetes were well healed of their periodontal diseases after the treatment.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of Baekhogainsam-tang for type 2 diabetes without complications by systemic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Methods: For a systematic review and meta-analysis, we set a key question in accordance with PICOT-SD. We searched the following up to March 31. 2021: PubMed, EMBASE, The Cochrane Library, CNKI, CiNii, KISS, KMBASE, OASIS, and ScienceON. A meta-analysis was conducted by synthesizing the results, including fasting plasma glucose level, postprandial 2-hour plasma glucose level, and Glycated Hemoglobin (HbA1c). Results: A total of five trials are included in this systemic review. The treatment group (Baekhogainsam-tang plus conventional treatment) showed more statistically significant effect than did the control group (conventional treatment only) in fasting plasma glucose level, postprandial 2-hour plasma glucose level, and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Conclusions: Baekhogainsam-tang showed statistically significant effects in hypoglycemic effect and in improving insulin resistance. However, the number of studies included in the meta-analysis was insufficient, and the BIT used in the included studies was not standardized. This topic requires further attention and more clinical research.

  • Objective: This study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an individually tailored program based on self-measurement of blood glucose on health behavior and HbA1c in diabetes and pre-diabetes patients. Methods: The program consisted of seven sessions for 12 weeks which were carried out every two weeks. Almost all sessions were progressed on untact method except for the first and last session. The 71 subjects were assessed for their knowledge of diabetes, health behavior, the experience of self-measurement of blood glucose, body mass Index (BMI) and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) at before and after the program. They were also evaluated on their degree of utilization of blood glucose measurements after the program. Results: Each mean score on their knowledge of diabetes, health behavior and the experience of self-measurement of blood glucose was significantly increased from 14.77, 25.50, and 2.70 to 15.41, 28.40, and 4.81, respectively. Each mean score on both BMI and HbA1c (n=53) was significantly decreased from 24.47kg/m2 and 7.27% to 24.01kg/m2 and 6.67%, respectively. The post-HbA1c had a significant negative correlation(r=-0.415) with the degree of utilization of blood glucose measurements. The degree of utilization of blood glucose measurements had a significant positive correlation(r=0.581) with post-health behavior. Conclusions: The program shows effectiveness in improving HbA1c in Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes patients. The post-HbA1c might be related to the degree of utilization of blood glucose measurements which might be related to the health behavior.
