Purpose: This study was done to investigate correlations between compliance and physiological parameters of hemodialysis patients. Method: The subjects were 102 patients on hemodialysis at 3 hospitals in B city. Data was collected using Shon(l986)'s questionnaire and measuring physiological parameters (serum urea nitrogen, creatinine, hemoglobin, albumin, potassium, phosphorus, interdialytic weight gain). Result: Mean scores of compliance with the therapeutic regimen was $4.00\pm$ 0.55 on a 5 point scale. The area of visiting hospitals and taking medicines . were shown to have high compliance with therapeutic regimens; on the other hand, the areas concerning diet and symptoms were shown to be low. Interdialytic weight gain and phosphorus were significantly related to the compliance with therapeutic regimens. Conclusion: Hemodialysis patients' therapeutic compliance was related to the physiological parameters(potassium, phosphorus, interdialytic weight gain). Therefore, these findings give hemodialysis patients useful information for raising their therapeutic compliance.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to discover kidney transplant and hemodialysis patients' quality of life(QOL) and provide basic data to improve their QOL. Method: One hundred two hemodialysis patients and 106 kidney transplant patients were given a self-administered questionnaire from Mar. 6 to Mar 31, 2006. The instrument consisted of demographic variables, therapeutic-related characteristics and QOL. Collected data was processed using the SPSS 12.0 statistical program for real numbers, percentages, ANCOVA, t-test, ANOVA, Stepwise multiple regression and the Scheffe test. Results: Kidney transplantpatients' QOL was higher than hemodialysis patients. The demographic variables which showed a significant difference in overall QOL were religion, children and monthly income for kidney transplantpatients and educational background for hemodialysis patients. The therapeutic-related variable which showed a significant difference in overall QOL was the patients' perceived health condition for both groups. The influencing factor on overall QOL for both groups was the health condition perceived by themselves. The total variance of the variable for QOL was 42% for kidney transplant patients and 19% for hemodialysis patients. Conclusion: This study revealed that kidney transplant patients have a higher QOL and how patients perceive their health is the strongest influencing factor for QOL. However, there is a large difference between the demand and supply of kidney donors. To solve this problem the standards for donation should be reviewed and revised.
Hemodialysis is a way of treatment for the patients with acute and chronic renal failure. "Marginal man" depicts the enormous amount of stress that hemodialytic patients suffer. It is known that family with chronic illness get stressed along with the patients and they need nursing care also. This qualitative study was conducted in order to identify the family adaptation process in patients with hemodialysis. 6 dyads of hemodialytic patients and caregivers were interviewed for this research. By way of grounded theoretical strategy the data was collected from October 20, 1999 to November 20, 1999. at a hemodialytic unit that was located in Iksan, Chonbuk by the researcher. The main research questions were "What's the adaptation experience of a patient since after being received with hemodialysis?" to the patients, and "What's the family adaptation experience of hemodialysis?" to the caregivers. The collected data was analyzed by grounded theoretical strategy built by Glaser & Strauss in 1967. Results were as follows; 7 grounded concepts were observed from the patients with hemodialysis and 4 grounded concepts were found from the caregivers. Two categories were derived ; 1) Holding hope that is related with treatment 2) Changing a value system.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of emotional labor, compassion fatigue and occupational stress on the somatization of nurses in hemodialysis units. Methods: The sample consisted of 139 nurses in hemodialysis units from a tertiary hospital, a general hospital, a dialysis clinic, and a care hospital in G province. Data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson's correlation and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: There were significant correlations of the experience of emotional labor, compassion fatigue and occupational stress with the somatization of nurses in hemodialysis units. Factors influencing somatization intention were 'emotional labor' (${\beta}=.37$, p<.001), which explained 28% of the variance (F=10.00, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the factor influencing the somatization of nurses in hemodialysis units was emotional labor. Therefore, strategies to decrease emotional labor of nurses in hemodialysis units are required.
Purpose: This study was attempted to provide the foundations for the nursing intervention program that could improve hemodialysis patient's quality of life by examining influences of family support, self-efficacy and fatigue on quality of life among hemodialysis patients. Methods: We have surveyed 200 patients that aged 18 or older being diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and are receiving hemodialysis treatment in three general hospitals equipped more than 400 beds, one specialized dialysis clinics located in city M. Using the SPSS 17.0 windows program, gathered data were analyzed by number, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan, Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression analysis. Results: We found the factors that had great influences on patient's quality of life were family support (${\beta}=.155$, t=2.18, p=.031), fatigue (${\beta}=-.487$, t=-7.73, p<.001), and monthly income (${\beta}=.147$, t=2.36, p=.019). Explanatory power of this model was 49.6%. Conclusion: The quality of life of the hemodialysis patients on hemodialysis is affected by family support, fatigue, and monthly income. The higher monthly income, family support and the less fatigue, the more likely they can improve their quality of life.
Purpose: This study was designed to explore the effects of providing individualized education for hemodialysis patients on their knowledge of hemodialysis, compliance of patient role behavior, and physiologic parameters. Method: A quasi experimental design with a non-equivalent control group and a non-synchronized design was used. The experiment was conducted with a total of 40 hemodialysis patients (20 in the experimental group and 20 in the control group) at the artificial kidney center, C University Hospital. The experimental group was provided with individualized education, 30 minutes per session, three times per week, for two weeks. Results: The experimental group had significantly higher knowledge of hemodialysis than the control group after the education. The compliance of patient role behavior was more enhanced in the experimental group than the control group. The experimental group showed significantly higher values of blood urea nitrogen, but not the values of blood creatinine, albumin, kalium, and phosphorus. Conclusion: The individualized education was found to be an effective intervention for improving patients' knowledge of hemodialysis and compliance of patient role behavior.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status and to identify factors affecting malnutrition in hemodialysis patients. Methods: Data were collected from a convenience sample of 125 hemodialysis patients who agreed to participate in the study, between August 1 and October 4, 2014. Five structured questionnaires were used: Patient-generated Subjective Global Assessment, Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire, Self-rating Depression Scale, Fatigue Scale, and Family Support Scale. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, ${\chi}^2$-test, and stepwise multiple regression analysis by using SPSS/WIN 22.0 program. Results: Of 125 patients, 30.4% were found to be malnourished. Malnutrition was related to age, family household income, depression, fatigue, social support, appetite, and levels of C-reactive protein and serum albumin. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that appetite, C-reactive protein level, fatigue, and albumin level were significant factors affecting malnutrition in hemodialysis patients. Conclusion: Regular and consistent nutritional assessment is essential in hemodialysis patients. Nurses who care for hemodialysis patients need to consider the factors identified from these findings when assessing their patients' nutritional status and needs.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the time and content of dietary education by analyzing the physiological indicators of hemodialysis patients during their first year and to present baseline data related to dietary education for patients on hemodialysis. Methods: For this retrospective study physiological indicators for 73 patients on hemodialysis were analyzed. Data included levels of potassium, phosphorus, albumin and the IDWG rate, and Kt/V during the first year after starting hemodialysis. Repeated-measure ANOVA was used for statistical analysis. Results: Serum levels of phosphorus (p<.006), albumin (p<.001) and the IDWG rate (p<.001) increased significantly in the 7 months from the start of hemodialysis. Conclusion: The results indicate that the period in which diet related educational intervention is necessary is before physiological changes, that is, after 6 months of dialysis. The contents for effective education should include phosphorus-limited and weight control dietary restrictions at 6 months.

Purpose: Patients on hemodialysis need to manage the stress of having a life-threatening condition. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with stress among patients on hemodialysis. Methods: The research had a cross-sectional, descriptive design using a questionnaire. The participants were 91 adult patients on hemodialysis from four dialysis centers in a large Korean city. Data were analyzed with the SAS 9.2 program using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, and multiple regression. Results: There were statistically significant differences in stress by age, dialysis period, and change in employment status. In hemodialysis patients, stress was significantly positive correlated with fatigue and depression, but negatively correlated with self-esteem. Stepwise multiple regression analysis for stress revealed that the most powerful predictor was depression. Depression and fatigue explained 32.5% of the variance. Conclusion: The results indicate a need to manage the stress of these patients. The findings also suggest that consideration be given to characteristics of age, dialysis period, and employment status in developing strategies to reduce depression and fatigue and developing programs to manage the stress of patients on hemodialysis.

Purpose: In the present study, the difference in patients' nursing demands and nursing performance as perceived by the patients was examined. Methods: The participants were 272 patients on maintenance hemodialysis at five university hospitals. Nursing need and nursing performance were measured using the tool developed by Lee for this study. Results: The mean score for nursing demand was 3.35 points out of 4. The scores were higher for participants with middle school graduation or less, those not professing religion, and those whose medical insurance was of the medicaid type. The mean score for perceived nursing performance was 3.22 points out of 4. Nursing performance as perceived by hemodialysis patients was lower than nursing demand for 22 of 28 items. The item with the largest difference between nursing performance and nursing demand was 'Give a pain-free injection', followed by 'Explain about insurance benefits and supports' and 'Maintain quiet environment in the hemodialysis unit enabling rest during hemodialysis'. Conclusion: The results show that nursing performance as perceived by hemodialysis patients was lower than nursing demand. This result indicates a need to develop appropriate strategies to enhance nursing performance, especially for items that showed low nursing performance.
