  • Seven species of the genus $Melanaphis$ van der Goot are recognized in Korea, including $M.$ $sorini$ Halbert and Remaudi$\grave{e}$re new to Korea. Morphometric analysis is performed based on 27 major characteristics to determine the morphometric correlation between species and to suggest useful diagnostic characters in this species complex. We provide the identification key based on the results of the morphometric analysis.

  • To understand the biological characteristics of Corythucha ciliata occurring in Korea, developmental periods and its susceptibility to several insecticides were examined under growth chamber condition at $25^{\circ}C$. It took 11.1 day from egg to hatch. And duration of each stage up to the 5th nymph after hatching was 4.0, 2.1, 2.0, 2.9, and 4.0 days, respectively. Total duration from egg to adult was 26.1 days, preoviposition period was 12.2 days, and average number of eggs laid by a female was 83.0. Sex ratio of female was 51.6% and lifespan of female adult was 43.2% days. LC50 value of deltamethrin and esfenvalerate were 0.8 and 0.9 ppm, respectively. Insecticidal effects were better in pyrethroids than organophosphates and carbamates.

  • In India, mulberry (Morus spp.), the sole food plant of the silkworm, Bombyx mori (Linn.), is prone to infestation by the pink mealybug, Maconellicoccus hirsutus (Green). Infestation by this pest causes apical shoot malformation, popularly known as 'tukra'. Occurrence of tukra causes an appreciable reduction in leaf yield and quality, leading to low silkworm cocoon productivity. For management of M. hirsutus (Tukra), an IPM package comprising mechanical, chemical and biological measures was demonstrated in the mulberry gardens of five Government Silk Farms in Mysore District (Karnataka, India) during 1995-96. A suppression of 76.0% in tukra incidence and 90.19% in mealybug population was recorded by employ the IPM package which led to an estimated 4,000 kg recovery in leaf yield/ha/year. The impact of IPM package in the management of M. hirsutus, the role of biocontrol agent (Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Muls.) in pest suppression and the cost-benefit analysis of the IPM package are discussed.

  • The planthopper subfamily Achilinae (Metcalf, 1938) from Korea is taxonomically revised. Six genera and seven species are recorded among Korean fauna. Among them, one genus, Phenelia Kirkaldy, and two species, Phenelia striatella (Matsumura, 1914) and Deferunda qiana Chen and He (2010) are new to Korea. The male genital structures of all these species are described and illustrated, plus an identification key to the tribe, genus, and species is provided.

  • Due to the increasing interest in natural biopolymers including chitin, the exploitation of economic and easily accessible chitin sources with good physicochemical properties is nowadays required. In view of this fact, in the current study chitin was extracted and physicochemically characterized from six Cicadas (Hemiptera: Homoptera: Cicadoidea) species collected from Mediterranean region of Turkey (2014-15). Chitin was extracted using a classic extraction method that includes acid and base treatment. TGA results revealed a remarkable increase ($410-412^{\circ}C$) for all the six Cicada species compared to other chitin samples extracted from various sources. For all of the six selected species the chitin contents on the dry basis were determined as 6.7% for Cicadatra atra, 5.51% for C. hyalina, 8.84% for C. platyptera, 4.97% for Cicada lodosi, 6.49% for C. mordoganensis, and 5.88% for Cicadetta tibialis. The surface morphology of chitin isolates from Cicada species was observed to consist of nanofibers and nanopores.

  • The family Chamaemyiidae is commonly referred to as aphid flies, as all larvae are predators of sternorrhynchous aphidoid or coccoid hemiptera, as well as a small group of acalyptratae flies found worldwide. Adults are small flies and typically found near their larval prey in grasslands and forests. They have a silver-gray body with dark gray or black markings on the abdominal tergites. This family is described for the first time in the Korean fauna, based on the discovery of two nominated species: Leucopis argentata and Leucopis glyphinivora. Diagnoses and figures about the firstly recorded species, and a key to the Korean species are provided herein.
