The thickness, loading, and broadband noise generated from the trailing edge of the UH-1H main rotor are numerically compared each other. The Kocureck and Tangler's prescribed wake model is adopted to represent the wake geometry during the hovering motion. Three tip Mach numbers of $M_{T}$ = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8, are selected to analyze the effects of different tip Mach numbers. At $M_{T}$ = 0.8, in considering the A-weighting and audible frequency band, the random noise is smaller than the tonal noises such as the thickness and the loading noise which have the low frequency characteristics. Especially most of the random noise frequency spread on the ultrasound region. On the other hand, below $M_{T}$ = 0.4, the band of random noise moves to the audible frequency region, and the random noise becomes larger than the tonal noise. It turns out that the random noise analysis of the rotor should be necessary at low speed operating condition.

The objective of this study is ensuring safety of cabin when the blade impacts into a obstacle by verifying safety of the rotor mast and the transmission using impact loads calculated from the simulation. The rotor mast shall not fail and the transmission shall not be displaced into occupiable space when the main rotor composite blade impact into a 8 inch rigid cylinder in diameter on the outer 10% of the blade at operational rotor speed. To calculate the reaction loads at the spherical bearing and lead-lag damper, blade impact analysis was performed with FE model consist of composite blade, tree(or rigid cylinder) using elastic-plastic with damage material and several contact surfaces which were created to describe a progress of actual failure. Also, the reaction loads were investigated in change of blade rotation speed and pitch angle.

This paper describes the design and analysis technology of composite flexure and composite paddle-type blade which are all key technologies on hingeless rotor system. Through replacing the existing metal or engineering plastic flexure part with composite part, Several required structural analysis were accomplished, which are static analysis by using NASTRAN and dynamic analysis by using FLIGHTLAB. The dynamic characteristics of composite hingeless hub attached with paddle-type blade was also investigated. Further more, small-scaled paddle-type blade was designed using froude scaled properties of existing full size blade. Through this design procedure of composite paddle-type blade, the structural design method was achieved. These results will be applied to accomplishing current project named as "the development of next-generation helicopter rotor system."

The accurate prediction of modal parameters of a rotating blade is an important requirement in the assessment of the dynamics of a helicopter rotor. Indeed, predictions of flight loads and stability are normally dependent on initially predicting the undamped mode shapes. A measuring technique, known as Strain Pattern Analysis (SPA), appears to be the most successful technique for measuring the mode shapes of rotating blades. This method was developed to be used on actual aircraft so no attempt was made to measure rotating mode shapes directly in order to validate the SPA method. This report summarizes results from experimental investigations which were carried out to validate the SPA method for the prediction of aerodynamically damped modes of a rotating blade. A series of modal tests were carried out on two rotor models in which the non-rotating, undamped and aerodynamically damped rotating modes were measured directly (strain and displacement patterns). It is shown that the SPA method to be very successful in itself but there are a number of limitations in validating this technique. To provide data which could be used to confidently validate theoretical prediction codes, existing limitations should be addressed.

This paper presents a design optimization of a new Advanced Active Blade Twist (AATR-II) blade incorporating single crystal Macro Fiber Composites (MFC) and conducts vibratory loads reduction analysis using an obtained optimal blade configuration. Due to the high actuation performance of the single crystal MFC, the AATR blade may reduce the helicopter vibration more efficiently even with a lower input-voltage as compared with the previous ATR blades. The design optimization provides the optimal cross-sectional configuration to maximize the tip twist actuation when a certain input-voltage is given. In order to maintain the properties of the original ATR blade, various constraints and bounds are considered for the design variables selected. After the design optimization is completed successfully, vibratory load reduction analysis of the optimized AATR-II blade in forward flight condition is conducted. The numerical result shows that the hub vibratory loads are reduced significantly although 20% input-voltage of the original ATR blade is used.

In this study, computational structural vibration analyses of a smart unmanned aerial vehicle (SUAV) with tilt-rotors due to dynamic hub loads have been conducted considering detailed supporting structures of installed equipments. Three-dimensional dynamic finite element model has been constructed for different fuel conditions and tilting angles corresponding to helicopter, transition and airplane flight modes. Practical computational procedure for modal transient response analysis is successfully established. Also, dynamic loads generated by rotating blades and wakes in the transient and forward flight conditions are calculated by unsteady computational fluid dynamics technique with sliding mesh concept. As the results of present study, transient structural displacements and accelerations of the vibration sensitive equipments are presented in detail. In addition, vibration characteristics of structures and installed equipments of which safe operation is normally limited by the vibration environment specifications are physically investigated for different flight conditions.

In this paper, the result of the conceptual study of a tipjet driven propulsion system is presented. The concept of a tipjet driven propulsion system is to employ tipjet as power source to drive a rotor Because the vehicle is supposed to takeoff and land vertically, a rotor system, which has tipjet nozzles, is adopted to fly like a helicopter. Exhaust gas, which is generated by an engine, Passes through an internal duct system and divided into four blade ducts. The design code is consists of two parts, engine model and internal duct model. Inside a rotating duct, compressible flow is affected by two additional force terms, centrifugal force and coriolis force and they govern the performance in rotary mode, The intention of this paper is to address the issues associated with sizing and optimizing configurations of a tipjet driven propulsion system especially in rotary wing mode.

Aerodynamic data measured in a wind tunnel has inevitable errors due to the presence of the wind tunnel walls. These unwanted interference effects must be corrected for the wall interference free aerodynamic data. Streamline curvature effects are caused by straightening of streamlines due to wind tunnel walls. Classical Glauert's correction method that is a standard method for fixed wing aircraft is not suitable for rotary wing aircraft. In this paper, Heyson's correction method of which wake model is compatible with rotors is used to correct the rotor shaft angle as well as the dynamic pressure. The results of Heyson's method are compared with Glauert's correction method.

Compared to the noise limits (CAN7) specified in ICAO Annex 16 for civil helicopters, the Lynx helicopter equipped with BERP blades has only 0.2 EPNdB margin in the approach case although it has more than 4 EPNdB margin in fly-over and take-off conditions. The objectives of the study described in this paper were to devise a low noise main rotor blade for the Lynx using UEAF combined with the high resolution airload model ACROT. A design requirement is that the new blade, KBERP (Korean BERP) blade should achieve a significant reduction in noise during approach(at least 6EPNdB margin) without any noise penalty in fly-over and take-off conditions and minimal performance penalty. It was decided to investigate a tip modification to the BERP blade, employing the twin vortex concept to reduce the BVI noise and to retain the excellent high speed performance characteristics of BERP. Through the parametric study, the KBERP blade with optimized twin vortices has at least a 9 EPNdB noise margin in approach flight condition with only a small penalty in fly-over and take-off conditions. The KBERP tip is thus a very cost effective wav to reduce BVI noise during approach.

Active vibration control system(AVCS) for helicopter enables to control the vibration generated from the main rotor and has the superb vibration reduction performance with low weight compared passive vibration reduction device. In this paper, FxLMS algorithm-based vibration control software of the light civil helicopter tansmits the control command calculated using the signals of the tachometer and accelerometers to the circular force generator(CFG) is developed and verified. According to the RTCA DO-178C/DO-331, the vibration control software is developed through the model based design technique, and real-time operation performance is evaluated in PILS(processor in-the loop simulation) and HILS(hardware in-the loop simulation) environments. In particular, the reliability of the software is improved through the LDRA-based verification coverage in the PIL environments. In order to AVCS to light civil helicopter(LCH), the dynamic response characteristic model is obtained through the ground/flight tests. AVCS configuration which exhibits the optimal performance is determined using system optimization analysis and flight test and obtain STC certification.
