  • This experimental study was mainly investigated on the swirl flow characteristics in the cylinder generated by a helical intake port. LDA system was used for the measurement of in-cylinder velocity fields. Tangential and axial velocity profiles, with varying valve lifts, valve eccentricity ratios and axial distance, were measured. When the intake valve was set in the cylinder center, we could find that in-cylinder swirl flow fields were composed of a forced vortex motion and a free vortex motion in the vicinity of the cylinder center and the cylinder wall respectively. In case of valve eccentricity ratio, N$_{y}$ = 0.45, the vortex flow which rotates to the opposite direction of a main rotating flow in the cylinder was found. And the reverse flow toward the cylinder head surface was also found in axial velocity profile and it showed the tendency of the linear decrease in the region of 0.leq.Y/B.leq.1.2.2.

  • The object of this study was to obtain data on air-distributions in two-phase up flow in vertical rod-bundle test-section. The test-section in this study was a hexagonal shaped 61-rod bundle where each rod was wrapped with helical spacers. The variables were flow rates of air and water and air inlet positions. Experimental data were obtained at the outlet of the test-section. The experiments were performed in two parts. Firstly, data were taken at increasing flow rates of air keeping water flow rates constant, and secondly, at simultaneous increase of air and water flow rates. At each flow condition, air supply position could be changed to 4 different positions. Data obtained by electrical void-needle technique were analyed and are presented here in graphical forms for comparison. The results of this study demonstrate qualitatively that air-distribution tends to be more uniform as water flow rates are increased. The air supply positions have noticeable effects on the pattern of air-distribution.

  • Numerical investigation on the structures of various Taylor vortices induced in the flow between two concentric cylinders, with the inner one rotating and with a pressure-driven axial flow imposed, is carried out, and compared with the experiments of Wereley and Lueptow [Phys. fluid, 11(12), 1999] who studied the Taylor vortices using PIV in detail. Especially, the properties of helical vortices and random wavy vortices are discussed, and their three-dimensional structures are visualized using the numerical data. Our simulation also predicts that random wavy vortices have quasi-periodic movement which can be explained by traveling waves formed in the azimuthal direction. The numerical results are well consistent with the experimental findings of Wereley and Lueptow.

  • In this study, flow-driven rotor simulations with a given load are conducted to analyze the operational characteristics of a vertical-axis Darrieus turbine, specifically its self-starting capability and fluctuations in its torque as well as the RPM. These characteristics are typically observed in experiments, though they cannot be acquired in simulations with a given tip speed ratio (TSR). First, it is shown that a flow-driven rotor simulation with a two-dimensional (2D) turbine model obtains power coefficients with curves similar to those obtained in a simulation with a given TSR. 3D flow-driven rotor simulations with an optimal geometry then show that a helical-bladed turbine has the following prominent advantages over a straight-bladed turbine of the same size: an improvement of its self-starting capabilities and reduced fluctuations in its torque and RPM curves as well as an increase in its power coefficient from 33% to 42%. Therefore, it is clear that a flow-driven rotor simulation provides more information for the design of a Darrieus turbine than a simulation with a given TSR before experiments.

  • The effects of varing axial flow rate and solute concentration on the performance of both module sets made by different methods for active layer formation were compared and determined. All experiments were conducted simultaneously at the same transmembrane pressure and energy consumption per membrane area. In every comparative run between the presence of Dean vortices in a helical module and absence of such vortices in a linear module from the first module set, the solution fluxes and permeabilities were higher, and in some cases substantially higher for the vortex flow. With pure water, the permeabilities of both modules from the second module set were different and the flux in a linear module was 150% higher than in the helical module. This explained both module membranes were totally different.

  • Four helical resonators are distributed in a 2 ${\times}$ 2 array by modifying upper part of the conventional reactive ion etching(RIE) type LCD etcher in order to prepare a large area plasma source. Since the resonance condition of the RF signal to the helical antenna, one RF power supply is used for delivering the power efficiently to all four helical resonators without an impedance matching network Previous work of 2 ${\times}$ 2array inductively coupled plasma(ICP)requires one matching circuit to each ICP antenna for more efficient power deliverly Distributions of ion density and electron temperature are measured in terms of chamber pressure, gas flow rate and RF power . By adjusting the power distribution among the four helical resonator units, argon plasma density of higher than 10$\^$17/㎥ with the uniformity of better than 7% can be obtained in the 620 ${\times}$ 620$\textrm{mm}^2$ chamber.

  • A helical vane is applied to reduce the magnitude of the impulse wave discharged from the exit of a duct. A shock tube with an open end is used to investigate the effect of the helical vanes on the impulse wave magnitude. Four different types of helical vanes are installed into the low-pressure tube of shock tube. The magnitude of the incident shock wave is varied below 1.25, and the magnitude of impulse wave is measured using a pressure transducer mounted on a wedge probe. Instant images of the impulse wave are obtained by means of the Schlieren optical method. The present experimental results show that the helical vane considerably reduces the magnitude of the impulse wave and the vane effects are more remarkable for stronger incident shock wave.

  • Three-dimensional steady and pulsatile flows in an end-to-side anastomosis were investigated using a finite difference method in order to understand the flow dynamics in the preferential development of distal anastomotic intimal hyperplasia or thrombosis. Steady flow results revealed that a double helical vortex was formed in the host artery and flow recirculations near toe find heel regions were restricted due to the secondary flow. Oscillating wall shear stress with significant secondary flow might be flow dynamic reason of developing intimal hyperplasia or thrombosis near the anastomotic region.

  • This paper newly proposes an efficient analytic springback prediction method to predict the final dimensions of bent cylindrical tubes for a helical tube steam generator in a small modular reactor. Three-dimensional bending procedure is treated as a two-dimensional in-plane bending procedure by integrating the Euler beam theory. To enhance the accuracy of the springback prediction, mathematical representations of flow stress and elastic modulus for unloading are systematically integrated into the analytic prediction model. This technique not only precisely predicts the final dimensions of the bent helical tube after a springback, but also effectively predicts the various target radii. Numerical validations were performed for five different radii of helical tube bending by comparing the final radius after a springback.

  • In this study the regression rate of hybrid rocket fuel has been investigated by swirl injectors and helical grains. Tests have been done with two kinds of injector and helical grain. In this paper the swirl injector and helical grain were varied to find the optimal condition to obtain the max regression rate for a given operational condition.
