Behavior of Concrete/Cold Formed Steel Composite Beams: Experimental Development of a Novel Structural System

  • The use of light-gauge steel framing in low-rise commercial and industrial building construction has experienced a significant increase in recent years. In such construction, the wall framing is an assembly of cold-formed steel (CFS) studs held between top and bottom CFS tracks. Current construction methods utilize heavy hot-rolled steel sections, such as steel angles or hollow structural section tubes, to transfer the load from the end seats of the floor joist and/or from the load-bearing wall studs of the stories above to the supporting load-bearing wall below. The use of hot rolled steel elements results in significant increase in construction cost and time. Such heavy steel elements would be unnecessary if the concrete slab thickening on top of the CFS wall can be made to act compositely with the CFS track. Composite action can be achieved by attaching stand-off screws to the track and encapsulating the screw shank in the deck concrete. A series of experimental studies were performed on full-scale test specimens representing concrete/CFS flexural elements under gravity loads. The studies were designed to investigate the structural performance of concrete/CFS simple beams and concrete/CFS continuous headers. The results indicate that concrete/CFS composite flexural elements are feasible and their structural behavior can be modeled with reasonable accuracy.

  • In this case of study, Incheon International Airport 2nd phase site preparation 1st section estimated final settlement to improve soft ground. Final settlement is very important in preloading method. Recently, Hyperbolic method, Hoshino method and Asaoka method are used mostly in prediction of final settlement and this paper, Comparing a result of Final settlement, used to Artificial Neural Network. The structure of Dynamic Artificial Neural Network which predicted Final settlement, has application to Young_Jong Island other site, If new investigation data will be added. Also, It is expected to save measuring_system cost in soft ground.

  • Reinforced polyurethane foam (RPUF) is one of the important materials of Mark III type insulation systems used in liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo containment systems. However, RPUF is the most difficult material to use with regard to its safety assessment, because there is little public and reliable data on its mechanical properties, and even some public data show relatively large differences. In this study, to investigate the structural response of the system under compressive loads such as sloshing action, time-dependent characteristics of RPUF were examined. A series of compressive load tests of the insulation system including RPUF under various temperature conditions was carried out using specimens with rectangular section. As a result, the relationship between deformation of RPUF and time is linear and dependent on the loading rate, so the concept of strain rate could be applied to the analysis of the insulation system. Also, we found that the spring constant tends to converge to a value as the loading rate increases and that the convergence level is dependent on temperature.

  • Finite element analysis was performed to evaluate the integrity of the tubes in the fixed tubesheet of horizontal type heat exchanger under operating condition. For the finite element analysis of the heat exchanger, tubes and tubesheets were equivalently modeled with concentroidal hexagonal columns and solid plates having equivalent properties for the convenience of finite element modeling, respectively. Load combination of tube pressure and thermal expansion most likely to precipitate possible failure of the tubes was selected and applied to the finite element analysis. The compressive stresses of the tubes were calculated based on displacements of each tube, which were obtained from anile element analysis. Finally, the maximum tube stress was compared with the design criterion of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII.

  • The development of an azimuth thruster which has the function of dynamic positioning and propulsion has been greatly required as the demand of vehicles with it increases. To develop or design a reliable azimuth thruster, it is appropriate that the performance and cavitation observation tests should be conducted in the regime of high Reynolds number. In the present study, to satisfy high Reynolds number condition new dynamometer for a large azimuth thruster is manufactured and arranged in the test section of the Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT). The test method composed of the open water and the cavitation observation tests is established successfully in LCT, considering the thruster design.

  • The present study aims at suggesting the systematic approach to analyze the local drag components as the resistance performance characterized by the flow of the ship. In order to identify the local areas, the hull surface is decomposed into SVM (Station-Vertical Section Map) which consists of 20 stations along the longitudinal direction and 20 sections along the vertical direction (from the bottom to the waterline). Successively, on the SVM, the friction and pressure drag coefficients as the components of total drag coefficient have been analyzed for two different hull forms of Wigley and KVLCC by using CFD.

  • The cryogenic system of RAON which is Korea's first heavy ion accelerator was numerically modeled and simulated. EcosimPro which is widely used off-the-shelf numerical software for a large scale cryogenic system was used for the simulation. The model of SRF TF cryogenic system, which is the testbed of cryomodule, was firstly established. The integrity of system of SRF TF was confirmed by comparison of simulation and experimental results. The cool-down strategy to minimize the thermal stress of the cavity was simulated and an optimal strategy was established. In addition, the influence of valve and pump control parameters on the cooling time was investigated, and optimal control parameters were also derived. The cryogenic system of SCL3 that is a low-energy acceleration section including 55 cryomodules, valve boxes, and helium supply lines was also modeled. The soundness of the thermal shield system and interlock system of SCL3 was investigated.

  • This study of field control machine in the recycled vinyl rail is gantry crane type and promoting agricultural automatization through self-controlled spraying, harvesting and conveyance. In addition to, that control machine could get a cost and labor reduction effect through automatization and make better environment by preventing farmers from agrichemical damage, accidents and recycling wasted vinyl. That machine is able to be divided as traveling, spraying, harvesting and conveyance sections. In driving section consists of girder frame, carrier, rail, control system, driving system, working machine, rail and loading device for working machine. This machine has following advantages to be able to bring a big innovation in the agricultural industry. I) Accurate performance is able to be done by proper positioning due to based on the rails. 2) The soil is not made hard like heavy tractor 3) The wheel is not sank into the soil and slipped well under rain like heavy tractor. Therefore, weather and soil situation could not affect working condition. 4) Complete unmanned control and 24hours-working are available due to traveling on the rails. 5) It could use various energy resources like not only liquid fuel but also solar, common electronic power due to traveling on the rails.

  • For the Carsington Earth Dam in England, slope stability analyses using computer programs both 'PC-SLOPE' and 'PCSTABL5M' were conducted on the given geometric and geotechnical informations those obtained through an additional investigation after dam failure. Without the yellow clay layer, the designed section was stable with factor of safety 1.2, but the section was unstable under the higher excess pore pressure caused by the heavy rainfal1 and by considering the weak clay layer. The failure may be initiated by not only the sudden increase of pore pressure but also decrease of shear strength of the clay layer.

Conjunctive Numerical Model of Surface Runoff and River Flow (지표면-하천 유출의 연계 수치모형)

  • In this studs, hydraulic routing model has been developed to predict the water level and discharge in each river section with considering the full interaction between surface runoff and river flow. It improved the computation of flood runoff by reflecting the shape of hydrograph that was determined by the geological and flood characteristics, and the excessive computation of the peak discharge was eliminated by considering the effect of infiltration. The Inflow from surface runoff to river flow was applied to the equation of continuity by implementing effectively the flow in a number of river section, and resulted in a numerical stability at the rapid variation of rainfall. Measurements were conducted during heavy rain in the watershed area of Yang-Yang Namdae-Chun. The present model was tested to the field, and the computed results were compared to the observed data. Its applicability was confirmed with its verification.
