  • This experiment was carried out to study the effects of planting density and amount of fertilizer applied on the morphological, physiological and physical characteristics of barley culm. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Heavy application of fertilizer increased the diameter of the inside and outside thickness of culm, dry weight per unit culm, culm length, spike weight and number of per hill. 2. Thined planting density increased lodging resistance. But lodging resistance in sparse-planted plot of$20{\times}$ 20cm was almost the same as that in the plot of $15{\times}$ 15cm. 3. In the heavy fertilized plot weight of culm at breaking, bending moment of culm atbreaking, secondary moment of inertia and section modulus increased more than those in the standard fertilized one. As a result heavy application of fertilizer gave high lodging resistance. On the other hand thined planting density increased the above-mentioned physical characters of culm. 4. In the case of dense planting lodging index became higher in standard fertilized plot, but in the case of sparse planting over 10 x 10cm there were no significant differences in lodging index as affected by amount of fertilizer applied and planting density. 5. Grain yield was increased by heavy application of fertilizer and proper planting density was $5{\times}$ 5cm or $10{\times}$10cm for the safe maximum yield.

Development of Specifications and Design Criteria of Rest Area for Drowsy Drivers (고속도로 졸음쉼터 제원 산정 및 설계기준 정립에 관한 연구)

  • This study investigated current status of rest area for drowsy drivers on the highways and drew the related issues to define specifications and design criteria regarding expressway rest area for drowsy drivers on the highways. Based on the investigation result, geometric structure specifications and improvement plans are suggested. The entry part of a rest area for drowsy drivers on the highways was divided into deceleration transition section, deceleration lane and entry connection road while the exit part was divided into exit connection road, acceleration lane and acceleration transition section. The optimum length was estimated by considering the main lane vehicle traveling speed, traveling speed at the beginning/end point of entry/exit connection roads, deceleration and acceleration. In addition, reasonable design criteria were suggested by dividing the parking section of rest area for drowsy drivers according to parking style and cross-section composition, and length of parking space and then considering the ratio of vehicles using rest area for drowsy drivers, the ratio of heavy vehicles, and the design speed within a rest area for drowsy drivers. It is believed that the suggested design criteria on rest area for drowsy drivers on the highways can be utilized in the future planning and maintenance of rest area for drowsy drivers. Additionally, the defined criteria on installing rest area for drowsy drivers on the highways will prevent traffic accidents in resting facilities and highways as well as improve usage and safety of them.

  • With the development of fast construction mode in shipbuilding market, the demand on accuracy management of hull is becoming higher and higher in shipbuilding industry. In order to enhance production efficiency and reduce manufacturing cycle time in shipbuilding industry, it is important for shipyards to have the accuracy of ship components evaluated efficiently during the whole manufacturing cycle time. In accurate shipbuilding process, block accuracy is the key part, which has significant meaning in shortening the period of shipbuilding process, decreasing cost and improving the quality of ship. The key of block accuracy control is to create a integrate block accuracy controlling system, which makes great sense in implementing comprehensive accuracy controlling, increasing block accuracy, standardization of proceeding of accuracy controlling, realizing "zero-defect transferring" and advancing non-allowance shipbuilding. Generally, managers of accuracy control measure the vital points at section surface of block by using the heavy total station, which is inconvenient and time-consuming for measurement of vital points. In this paper, a new measurement method based on point clouds technique has been proposed. This method is to measure the 3D coordinates values of vital points at section surface of block by using 3D scanner, and then compare the measured point with design point based on ICP algorithm which has an allowable error check process that makes sure that whether or not the error between design point and measured point is within the margin of error.

Seismic Retrofit of Welded Steel Moment Connections Considering the Presence of Composite Floor Slabs (바닥슬래브를 고려한 용접철골모멘트접합부의 내진보강)

  • In the 1994 Northridge earthquake, connection damage initiated from the beam bottom flange was prevalent. The presence of a concrete slab and resulting composite action was speculated as one of the critical causes of the prevalent bottom flange fracture. In this study, four seismic retrofit schemes are proposed in order to salvage welded steel moment connections with composite floor slabs in existing steel moment frames. Because top flange modification of existing beams is not feasible due to the presence of a concrete floor slab, three schemes of bottom flange modification by using welded triangular or straight haunches or RBS(reduced beam section), and beam web strengthening by attaching heavy shear tab were cyclically tested and analyzed. Test results of this study show that haunch and web-strengthened specimens can eliminate the detrimental effect caused by composite action and ensure excellent connection plastic rotation exceeding 5% rad. Design recommendations for each retrofit scheme together with supplemental numerical studies are also presented.

  • In order to accelerate the commercialization of self-driving cars, it is necessary to accurately identify the causes of deteriorating the driving safety of the current self-driving cars and try to improve them. This study conducted a questionnaire survey of experts studying autonomous driving in Korea to identify the causes of problems in the driving safety of autonomous vehicles and the level of autonomous driving technology in Korea. As a result of the survey, the construction section, heavy rain/heavy snow conditions, fine dust conditions, and the presence of potholes were less satisfied with the current technology level than their importance, and thus priority research and development was required. Among them, the failure of road/road facilities and the performance of the sensor itself in the construction section and the porthole, and the performance of the sensor and the absence of an algorithm were the most responsible for the situation connected to the weather. In order to realize safe autonomous driving as soon as possible, it is necessary to continuously identify and resolve the causes that hinder the driving safety of autonomous vehicles.

Lead-free inorganic metal perovskites beyond photovoltaics: Photon, charged particles and neutron shielding applications

  • Over the last few years, lead-free inorganic metal perovskites have gained impressive ground in empowering satellites in space exploration owing to their material stability and performance evolution under extreme space environments. The present work has examined the versatility of eight such perovskites as space radiation shielding materials by computing their photon, charged particles and neutron interaction parameters. Photon interaction parameters were calculated for a wide energy range using PAGEX software. The ranges of heavy charged particles (H, He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si and Fe ions) in these perovskites were estimated using SRIM software in the energy range 1 keV-10 GeV, and that of electrons was computed using ESTAR NIST software in the energy range 0.01 MeV-1 GeV. Further, the macroscopic fast neutron removal cross-sections were also calculated to estimate the neutron shielding efficiencies. The examined shielding parameters of the perovskites varied depending on the radiation type and energy. Among the selected perovskites, Cs2TiI6 and Ba2AgIO6 displayed superior photon attenuation properties. A 3.5 cm thick Ba2AgIO6-based shield could reduce the incident radiation intensity to half its initial value, a thickness even lesser than that of Pb-glass. Besides, CsSnBr3 and La0.8Ca0.2Ni0.5Ti0.5O3 displayed the highest and lowest range values, respectively, for all heavy charged particles. Ba2AgIO6 showed electron stopping power (on par with Kovar) better than that of other examined materials. Interestingly, La0.8Ca0.2Ni0.5Ti0.5O3 demonstrated neutron removal cross-section values greater than that of standard neutron shielding materials - aluminium and polyethylene. On the whole, the present study not only demonstrates the employment prospects of eco-friendly perovskites for shielding space radiations but also suggests future prospects for research in this direction.

Numerical Analysis on the Effect of Long-crested Wave to the RCS of Marine Target (장파봉파가 해상표적의 RCS에 미치는 영향에 대한 수치해석)

  • RCS effects of long-crested wave surfaces to marine targets are numerically analyzed using a 4-path model and a direct analysis method, developed based on physical optics and a combined method of physical optics/geometric optics, respectively. Reflectivity of long-crested wave surfaces is described with 'Fresnel reflection coefficients' The MPM(modified Pierson-Moskowitz) ocean spectrum is adopted to simulate long-crested waves in the direct analysis method. A numerical analysis of a benchmark model assures the validity of both methods. The direct analysis method is applied to the RCS calculation of electromagnetically large marine targets, which are vertically oriented or slanted to the long crested wave surfaces randomly generated with various significant wave heights. The long-crested wave surface much highly increases the RCS of the marine target, but those effects are decreased as the significant wave height grows up. At low elevation angle, the vertical model has entirely high RCS comparing slanted model, and the RCS of vertical flat plate is the highest on the calm sea surface, while those of slanted flat plates are the lowest on the calm sea surface. The RCS of marine targets on continuously-varying sea surface is more coherent at lower elevation angles, as well.

Analysis and Reinforcing Method of Greenhouse Frame for Reducing Heavy Snow Damage (단동온실의 설해 경감을 위한 해석 및 보강방법연구)

  • Recently, the damage of the farmhouse has been increased due to frequent collapsing accidents of the pipe greenhouse caused by the heavy snow load derived from unusual weather phenomena. However, the study about it is rare and tenuous so that the damage is happened repeatedly. Although there are a few ways to improve the greenhouse such as increasing section, decreasing the distance between rafters in order to avoid the collapsing accidents, those ways have some shortcomings like cost and frame ratio increase, etc. Therefore, this study performed the large displacement analysis considering geometric non-linearity on each load level with respect to many kind of reinforcement methods and analyzed combined strength ratio and stress so as to search the ways, which enhance the structural stability of greenhouse and minimize the frame ratio increase. As a result, this paper is aimed at suggesting the optimal reinforcement method model.

Evaluation of Catchbasin for Increasing Interception Capability of Stormwater Runoff (강우유출수 차집능력 증대형 빗물받이의 성능 평가)

  • It is not cost effective to raise the density of catch basins in preparation for heavy rainfall in terms of construction and maintenance. Our researchers have developed the new catch basin for increasing interception capacity of runoff with internal filtration structure. To compare interception capacity of an existing catch basin with the invented catch basin, a hydraulic experiment device with 4% of road gradients and 0.2% of road gradients was constructed. For runoff conditions of 4.4 l/s, 6.7 l/s and 10.4 l/s, capability of runoff and separation capability of debris (sand and leaves) were evaluated. As the main experimental results, the effectiveness of the developed catch basin has been verified with an increase in interception rate of approximately 22% for the runoff of 6.7 l/s as heavy rainfall. However, the results of invented catch basin showed only 4.5% of settlement rate of debris regarding sand. Therefore, the authors proposed an improved tilted screen structure additionally. After reviewing the performance of improved catch basin, application of the invented catch basin is expected to drain runoff effectively when it is applied to the faulty road drainage section.

The Effect of Sb/RE on the As-Cast Morphology of Graphite and Mechanical Properties of Heavy Section Ferritic Ductile Cast Iron (후육 페라이트 구상흑연주철의 주방상태 흑연형상 및 기계적 성질에 미치는 Sb/RE의 영향)

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of Sb/RE on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast heavy sectioned, over 250mm thickness, ferritic ductile cast iron. Exothermic and thermal insulation material were equipped on the wall of sand cast mold having the dimensions of $250{\times}250{\times}250$ mm. The nominal composition of the molten metal was controlled to be on the eutectic composition and Sb was added about 0, 0.005 and 0.02% respectively. In the center of as-cast ingot without Sb addition, the solidification of chunky graphite was induced by the eutectic reaction that took long time, which caused the decrease of elongation and impact energy. In case that the value of Sb/RE is 0.8, the solidification of chunky graphite could be suppressed and the improvement of nodularity was observed. On the other hand, the excessive addition of Sb suppressed the solidification of chunky graphite but gave rise to the solidification of flake graphite and the increase of pearlite contents. This results in poor elongation and impact energy which is lower than those in the case of no Sb addition.
