A novel low NOx oil burner of 0.7 MW (for a 1 ton steam/hr industrial boiler) was designed and tested to investigate the combustion characteristics through in-flame measurement and flue gas analysis. Flame shape was observed by CCD camera and $CH^*/{C_2}^*$ radical distribution in the flame were observed, along with measurement of flue gas composition such as NOx and CO, for various heat inputs, excess airs and pressure of the fuel spary nozzles. The flame showed the two-zone structure: fuel-rich and fuel-lean zone, which was very favorable for the low-NOx combustion, and the NOx emission for haevy oil combustion was significantly reduced to < 150 ppm at 4 % $O_2$, compared with the NOx level of a conventional heavy oil burner.

This study is intended to check the flame temperature to raise in burning grade C heavy fuel oil and emulsion fuel oil in a boiler and to measure the concentration of Dry Shoot(DS) and Soluble Organic Fraction(SOF) after collecting the Particulate Matters (PM). The flames temperature in boiler was measured by burning grade C heavy oil and oil-water emulsion (C heavy oil $70\%\;and\;30\%$ of water) Combustion characteristics of two fuels was also compared by trapping particulate matters (PM) in exhaust gas and measuring the generated quantities of DS and SOF in fuel gas.

Recently, the International Maritime Organization makes an effort for an effective solution against the emissions from shipping in the international maritime industry. The objective of the study was to quantify the exhaust emissions of marine heavy fuel oil in the combustion process of the spray flame. An experiment was performed to measure CO, $CO_2$, NOx, $SO_2$, ${N_2}O$, DS, SOF and the other components with the flame temperature. The sampling probe was directly set up in the flame fields at each position of 103, 324, 545, 766 and 987mm vertically apart from the fuel-injected nozzle in the burner furnace. From the results of the study, it was estimated that approximately 270ppm of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), $1000{\sim}1400ppm$ of sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$), 8ppm of nitrous oxide (${N_2}O$), $2.0{\sim}2.5g/m^3$ of particulate matter (PM) divided with dry soot (DS) and soluble organic fraction (SOF) and $60{\sim}80mg/m^3$ of sulfuric acid. With respect to further development of this work, the emission quantification could also be applied to assessing emission reduction from the international shipping.

To optimize the intake flow condition in the heavy-duty LPG SI engine, five different swirl ratios of intake port were investigated experimentally by oil spot method, LDV and single cylinder engine test. The flow characteristics near the piston surface were observed by oil spot method and magnitudes of swirl flow were measured quantatively by LDV method in the steady flow rig. The engine performances of various swirl flow were also tested with the heavy-duty LPG SI single cylinder engine. In the results, high swirl ratio, above $R_s$=2.3, was not suitable to develope a stable flame kernel and to produce high engine performance. Especially it was more serious under lean burn conditions, since turbulence intensity was smaller than bulk flow though those are increased together. These results were also confirmed by LDV measurement and oil spot method. On the contrary, low swirl ratio($R_s$=1.3) is not good to propagate a flame since the turbulence intensity and bulk flow are vanished during compression stroke and low swirl ratio has too weak initial energy for stable combustion. Therefore, the of optimized swirl ratio f3r the heavy-duty LPG engine in this work was found around $R_s$=2.0.
In commercial combustion systems, heavy oil is one of main hydrocarbon fuel because of its economical efficiency. Regarding heavy oil combustion, due to increasing concerns over environmental pollutants such as carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbon and nitrogen oxides, development of low pollutant emission methods has become an imminent issue for practical application to numerous combustion devices. Also a great amount of effort has been tried to developed effective methods for practical using of biomass. It is also an important issue to reduce carbon tax. In this paper, an experimental study has been conducted to evaluate the effect of biomass reburning on NOx formation in a heavy oil flamed combustion furnace. Experiments were performed in flames stabilized by a multi-staged burner, which was mounted at the front of the furnace. Experimental tests were conducted using air-carried rice husk powder and LNG as the reburn fuel and heavy oil as the main fuel. The paper reports data on flue gas emissions and temperature distribution in the furnace for several kinds of experimental conditions. NOx concentration in the exhaust has decreased considerably due to effect of reburning. The maximum NOx reduction rate was 62% when the rice husk was used by reburn fuel, however it was 59% when the LNG was used by reburn fuel. The result shows the positive possibility of biomass reburning system for optimal NOx reduction.
Computations were performed to investigate the flow, temperature and pollutants in two stage heavy-oil combustion burner. The burner geometry and flow conditions were provided by a burner company. The goal of the study is to understand combustion phenomena according to each air inlet's velocity, excessive air ratio and air temperature through CFD. Air flow rates at two inlets are adjusted by a damper inside a burner. Here, injection conditions of liquid fuel are kept constant throughout all simulations. This assumption is made in order to limit the complexity of oil combustion though it may cause some disagreement. The final goal of this research is to design a Low-NOx heavy oil combustion burner through comparison between computational study and experimental ones. Besides experiments, simulation works can give us insights into heavy oil combustion and help us design a Low NOx burner while saving time and cost. The computational study is based on k-e model, P-1 radiation model(WSGGM) and PDF, and is implemented on a commercial code, FLUENT.
This study was carried out to determine the content of heavy metals in Crayons and Oil Pastele. Samples were collected from 3 manufacturing companies of Crayons and 2 manufacturing comppanies of Oil Pastele. The content of lead and cadmium were analyzed by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The average content of lead in Crayons and Oil Pastele were 26.2 ppm, 70.5 ppm, and the range 11.0-69.5 ppm, 26.5-353.0 ppm respectively. 2. The average content of cadmium in Crayons and Oil Pastele were all 4.1 ppm and range were 3.0-5.0 ppm, 2.5-5.0 ppm respectively.

Most researches regarding emulsified fuel were in the areas of emulsifier, emulsified fuel manufacturing and emulsified fuel droplet combustion, but there were little papers published regarding emulsified fuel combustion and boiler efficiency in an industrial boiler. The main purpose of this study is to clarify whether improvements in the boiler efficiency and the reduction of pollutants such as CO, NOx, SOx and smoke exist or not when emulsified fuels are combusted in the commercial boiler. Main experimental parameters were water content in heavy oil , excess $O_2$, and boiler load. The fuels used in this experiment were 0.5 B-C, and 5 kinds of 0.5 B-C/water emulsified fuels. The combustion characteristics of heavy oil and its emulsions with water were investigated in an industrial boiler. The combustion stability was monitored and exhaust gases such as CO, NOx, SOx and smoke were measured with excess $O_2$ and combustion load. In case of emulsified fuel combustion, flame stability was poor and boiler efficiency was lowered by 1.6~5.7%, but emission levels of CO and smoke were improved.

Combustion stability is one of the most important factors that must be considered in burning of heavy fuel oil, especially low-grade oil. This paper describes the combustion characteristics of petrochemical process by- product in the combustion furnace of heavy fuel oil. Main experimental parameters were combustion load, excess 02, fuel preheating temperature and air/fuel ratio. The capacity of CRF(combustion research facility) used in this study was 1.0 ton/hr and the burner is steam jet type suitable far heavy oil combustion and manufactured by UNIGAS in Italy. The fuel used in this experiment were 0.5 B-C, petrochemical process by-product and 3 kinds of 0.5 B-C/process by-product mixtures. The combustion stability was monitored and exhaust gases such as CO, NOx, SOx and particulates were measured with the excess $O_2$ and combustion load. The main purpose of this study is to clarify whether process by-product can be used as a boiler fuel or not in consideration of flame stability and emission properties.

A compute program based on the minimization of total Gibbs' free energy and enthalpy balance was developed to calculate the chemical equilibrium composition and adiabatic flame temperature, especially stressed on NO and CO concentration of Heavy oil. Twenty four components of combustion gases which would be produced from the combustion of Heavy oil were chosen and utilized for the products composition analysis of competing combustion reaction. As the results, following conclusions were turned out; (1) Maximum adiabatic flame temperature was found around to be 2900K, when the stoichiometric air ratio was 0.8. (2) Maximum NO quantity in adiabatic process was occurred when supplied air quantity was around 120% of theoretical air requirement. (3) NO and CO quantities were increased with combustion gas temperature at constant stoichiometric air ratio. (4) At constant temperature of combustion gas, NO quantity was increased and Co quantity was decreased with supplied air quantity.
