  • This study was conducted for an efficient utilization of waste fly ash obtained from the power plant. Fly ash was used for synthesizing zeolite. Na-Pl zeolite could be easily synthesized from waste fly ash and showed the potential to remove heavy metal ions. The synthetic zeolite showed good adsorption property for heavy metal much better than raw fly ash and natural zeolites. Na-Pl exhibited the high adsorption efficiency with a maximum value of 260 Pb mg/g and strong affinity for Pb2+ ion. The metal ion selectivity of Na-Pl was determined in a decreasing order : $Pb^{2+}$>$Cd^{2+}$>$Cu^{2+}$+>$Zn^{2+}$>$Fe^{3+}$

  • Adsorption experiments of heavy metal cations by Fe- and Al-hydroxides was conducted to obtain clear information on their adsorption mechanisms. The adsorption isothermal curves of heavy metal cations by Fe- and Al-hydroxides conformed to Langmuir's equation. Increasing the crystallinity degree of Fe- and Al-hydroxides tended to decrease the adsorption capacity and binding energy of heavy metal cations. At the same crystallinity degree, Al-hydroxide showed higher adsorption capacity and energy for the heavy metal cations than Fe-hydroxide. The adsorption capacity and energy of heavy metal cations were directly related to CEC, specific surface area and charge density of hydroxides, and the sequence was in the order of $Cu^{+{+}}$ > $Zn^{+{+}}$ > $Cd^{+{+}}$. The adsorption mechanism of $M^{+{+}}$ form of heavy metal could be presumed as the specific adsorption of $M^{+{+}}$ and the desorption of two $H^+$ from the surface aquo($OH_2$) and/or hydroxo(-OH) group for each mole of $M^{+{+}}$ adsorbed. A ring structure between $M^{+{+}}$ and two surface aquo and/or hydroxo groups was postulated. Nonspecific adsorption involved the adsorption of $MCl^+$ and the desorption of one H+ from the surface aquo and/or hydroxo groups for each mole of $M^{+{+}}$ adsorbed. A single bond structure in which $MCl^+$ replaced one $H^+$ from the surface aquo and/or hydroxo groups was postulated. The ratio of specific to nonspecific adsorption increased with increasing pH.

  • Colorimetric sensors were usually used to detect specific metal ions using selective color change of solutions. While almost organic dye in colorimetric sensors detected single molecule, dithizone (DTZ) solution could be separately detected above 5 kinds of heavy metal ions by the change of clear color. Namely, DTZ could be used as multi-colorimetric sensors. However, DTZ was generally used as aqueous type and paper/pellet-type DTZ was not reported yet. Therefore, in this work, polystyrene (PS) was prepared to composite with DTZ and then DTZ/PS pellet was obtained, which was used to selectively detect 10 kinds of heavy metal ions. When 10 ppm of Hg and Co ions was exposed in DTZ/PS pellets, clear color change was revealed. It is noted that DTZ/PS pellet could be used in detecting of heavy metal ion as dry type.

  • Fast industrial and agricultural expansion result in the production of heavy metal ions (HMIs). These are exceedingly hazardous to both humans and the environment, and the necessity to eliminate them from aqueous systems prompts the development of novel materials. In the present study, a UIO-66 (COOH)2 metal-organic framework (MOF) containing free carboxylic acid groups was post-synthetically modified with L-glutamic acid via the solid-solid reaction route. Pristine and glutamic acid-treated MOF materials were characterized in detail using several physicochemical techniques. Single-ion batch adsorption studies of Pb(II) and Hg(II) ions were carried out using pristine as well as amino acid-modified MOFs. We further examined parameters that influence removal efficiency, such as the initial concentration and contact time. The bare MOF had a higher ion adsorption capacity for Pb(II) (261.87 mg/g) than for Hg(II) ions (10.54 mg/g) at an initial concentration of 150 ppm. In contrast, an increased Hg(II) ion adsorption capacity was observed for the glutamic acid-modified MOF (80.6 mg/g) as compared to the bare MOF. The Hg(II) ion adsorption capacity increased by almost 87% after modification with glutamic acid. Fitting results of isotherm and kinetic data models indicated that the adsorption of Pb(II) on both pristine and glutamic acid-modified MOFs was due to surface complexation of Pb(II) ions with available -COOH groups (pyromellitic acid). Adsorption of Hg(II) on the glutamic acid-modified MOF was attributed to chelation, in which glutamic acid grafted onto the surface of the MOF formed chelates with Hg(II) ions.

  • Fixed-bed adsorption of metal ions on chitosan bead was studied to remove heavy metal ions in waste water. Chitin was extracted from carb shell and chitosan was prepared by deacetylation of the chitin. The chitosan in bead was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions. Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm was determined from the experimental results of equilibrium adsorption for individual metal ion ($Cu^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$) on chitosan bead. Adsorption strength of metal ions decreased in the order of $Cu^{2+}$>$Co^{2+}$>$Ni^{2+}$ ion. Breakthrough curves of single and multicomponent adsorption for metal ions were obtained from the experimental results of fixed-bed adsorption. The breakthrough curves were analyzed by simulation with fixed-bed adsorption equation based on LDFA (linear driving force approximation) adopted LAS (ideal adsorbed solution) theory which can predict multi-component adsorption isotherm from individual adsorption isotherm. The behavior of fixed bed adsorption for single and multi-component system could be nicely simulated by the equation.

  • The characteristics of heavy metal ion (Ni2+, Zn2+, and Cr3+) adsorption by zeolite synthesized from Jeju scoria using the fusion and hydrothermal method, were studied. The synthetic zeolite was identified as a Na-A zeolite by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy images. The equilibrium of heavy metal ion adsorption by synthetic zeolite was reached within 60 min for Ni2+ and Zn2+, and 90 min for Cr3+. The uptake of heavy metal ions increased with increasing pH in the range of pH 3-6 and the uptake decreased in the order of Cr3+ > Zn2+ > Ni2+. For initial heavy metal concentrations of 20-250 mg/L at nonadjusted pH, the adsoption of heavy metal ions was well described by the pseudo second-order kinetic model and was well fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum uptake of heavy metal ions obtained from the Langmuir model, decreased in the order of Zn2+ > Ni2+ > Cr3+, differing from the effect of pH on the uptake, which was mainly based on the different pH of the solutions.

  • For the purpose of electrolytic treatment of wastewater containing various heavy metals, the BPBE Cell of batch and continuous type was considered and experimented. Some results from this study were summarized as follows: 1. When the artificial wastewater containing 500 mg/l of the concentration of various heavy metallic ion was electrolyzed in BPBE Cell of batch type, the removal efficicency was over 95% in cadmiun (II), lead (II), chromium (Ⅵ) and over 85% in copper (II), chromium (III). 2, As granular activated carbon packed in BPBE Cell, coconut shell was superior to lignite and the removal efficiency was the highest when the activated carbon was 4/6 mesh, the voltage was 20V. 3. When the heavy metallic ion in wastewater was electrolyzed in BPBE Cell of continuous type, about 1,000mg of heavy metal per 1kg of coconut sell could be removed. 4. The treatment method of heavy metallic ion in wastewater by BPBE Cell cost less than in the former chemical treatment method and the coconut shell packed in BPBE Cell could be regenerated by chemical method.

  • We studied the adsorption characteristics on the treatment process of heavy metal wastewater by using cuttle fish bones powder. When adding the 0.25% cuttle fish born powder in the heavy metal solution, $Fe^{3+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ were high removed than other heavy metals as above 95%. In the solution which was adjusted to pH 5, 7 and 9, there was not observed the difference thing on the heavy metal removal rate. At test using plating wastewater treatment, adding 1%, 1.5% and 2% of the cuttle fish born powder, the heavy metal removal rate were as follows; Zn 12.5 - 37.5%, Mn 18.0 - 62.2%, Cd 36.8 -93.0%, Cu 51.4 - 97.4%, Cr 70.8 - 99.1%, Fe 87.2 - 99.3% and Pb 92.8 - 99.9%. When adding the 0.15% cuttle fish born powder and mixing for 20 minutes, the solution was happened the adsorption equability. Applied this results to the Freundlich's iso-thermal equation, we found the cuttle fish born's probability as a good adsorbent.

  • This study was aimed ultimately to develop an adsorption process treating heavy metal wastewater by utilizing activated carbon using flyash. The affecting factors in adsorption process on heavy metal by flyash adhesion-activated carbon are s follows. Factors such as pH, and quality of activated carbon, and reaction time made batch adsorption isotherm described adsorption capacity was made use of the investigation to evaluate adsorptive possibility of heavy metal. As the results of this study, H ion has influence on adsorption of heavy metal if pH is low. As reaction time is transformed, factors such as optimum reaction time is taken into consideration an adsorptive process of heavy metal because an adsorption and a reduction process occur. Adsorption isotherm of adhesion-activated carbon was generally obeyed to Freundlich formular than Langmuir formular and Freundlich constant, l/n were obtained in the range of 0.1~0.5.
