This work carried out to analyze the physicochemical properties and investigate the assessment of heavy metal contamination of stream sediments of the Yudeung and the Gab streams in the Daejeon area. The pH of stream sediments of the Yudeung stream shows the range of weak acid and weak alkaline. Most of stream sediments contain about 80% sand grain and have low water and cation retention capacity. Hence the stream sediments are not suitable fur various plans to grow up. The analysis of heavy metals in the stream sediments shows that the concentration of Pb, Cr and Cd increases from upstream to down stream. It is likely that the trend has a relationship with the water. Contamination of stream water. The authors recommend that clay materials be replenished in the stream sediments to increase the self-purification capacity and to make the suitable condition for growing up of various plants, and that water quality of the stream which can Influence into the contamination of stream sediments be monitored.
This study aimed to fundamentally understand changes of cell parameters of cation-exchanged mordenites using high resolution X-ray powder diffraction for studies that immobilization of various heavy metal cation using synthesis mordenite (Na6.6Al6.6Si41.4O96·20.4H2O, Na-MOR). As a results of measurement by Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), it was confirmed that 19.4, 20.4 water molecules per unit cell were present in monovalent-cation substituted MOR (Cs-MOR, Na-MOR), and 21, 23.1, 23.2 water molecules per unit cell were present in divalent-cation substituted MOR (Pb-MOR, Sr-MOR, Cd-MOR). The space group of all the samples were identified as Cmcm belonging to the orthorhombic crystal system. Compared to Na-MOR, starting material, relative peak intensity of (110) and (200) is significantly changed after cation substitution whereas peak position is almost similar. Also, (220) peak that was not found in Na-MOR was clearly observed in Pb-, Cd- and Sr-exchanged MOR. Thus, it was estimated that changes of atomic distribution usually occurred on ab-plane while changes of cell parameters were little. Detailed changes in the cell parameters of cation-exchanged mordenites were derived from whole profile fitting method using the GSAS suite program. Changes in the axial lengths and unit cell volume of cation substitution showed different relationship depending on ionic radius and charge number. In case of monovalent-cation substituted MOR, the length of a-axis increases whereas the length of b- and c-axis decrease by absorbed cation radius. In the case of divalent-cation exchanged MOR, the length of a-axis usually decreases while the length of b- and c-axis increases by cation radius. It was confirmed that unit cell volume of monovalent and divalent cation substituted MORs had an independent tendency by cation radius.
To isolate and purify fibrinolytic active substance from Sarcodon aspratus(N $H_4$)$_2$S $O_4$ precipitation, DE52 anion exchange column chromatography, Sephacryl-S 200gel filtration chromatography and Mono S cation FPLC were carried out and the characterizations of the purified enzyme were investigated. The bound active fraction on DE52 anion exchange column chromatography were eluted with 0.2 M NaCI and the fibrionlytic enzyme was purified after following Sephacryl-S200 gel fitration chromatography and Mono S cation EPLC. The specific activity of purified enzyme was 55.2 U/mg protein and increased 11.3 fold comparing crude extract and the yield was 49.5%. 12% SDS-PAGE electrophoresis and gel filtration chromatography revealed that Sarcodon aspratus fibrionloytic enzyme was highly purified and had 29.300 Da molecular weight. Enzyme activity of the purified fibrinolytic enzyme from Sarcodon aspratus was increased on higher pH and was stable until pH 10.5. On temperature dependent stability, the enzyme activity was decrease sharply but remained 25% relative activity on 8$0^{\circ}C$. This enzyme activity was inhibited by heavy metal ion, C $U^{2+}$ and $Co^{3+}$ with 68% and 38%, respectively. And also, the enzyme activity was inhibited with $Ca^{2+}$ chelator EDTA and serine protease inhibitor PMSF. These results from this study suggested that the fibrinolycit enzyme from Sarcodon aspratus is a serine protease and the enzyme activity was increased by $Ca^{2+}$ or $Mg^{2+}$ ion.n.ion.n.

Retardation effect of heavy metals in soils caused by adsorption onto the surfaces of solids particles is well known phenomena. The adsorption of metal ions has been recognized more strong in clay mineral and organic matter contents rather than sands and gravels. In this study, we investigated the retardation effect in two sandy soils by conducting batch and column tests. The column tests were conducted to obtain the relationship between concentration and time known as breakthrough curve (BTC). We applied pulse type injection of ZnCl$_2$solution on the inlet boundary and monitored the effluent concentration at the exit boundary under steady state condition using EC-meter and ICP-AES. Batch test consisted of an equilibrium procedure for fine fractions collected from two sandy soils for various initial ZnCl$_2$concentrations, and analysis of Zn ions in equilibrated solution using ICP-AES. The results of column test showed that i) the peak concentration of Zn analyzed by ICP was far less than that detected by EC-meter for both soils and ii) travel times for peak concentration were more less identical for two different monitoring techniques. The first result can be explained by ion exchange between Zn and other cations initially present in the soil particles since ICP analysis showed a significant amount of Ca, Mg ions in the effluent. From the second result, we found that retardation effect was not present in these soils due to strong cation exchange capacity of Zn ion over other cations since we did not apply a solution containing more adsorptive cations such as Al. The result of batch test also showed high distribution coefficients (K$_{d}$) for two soils supporting the dominant ion exchange phenomena. Based on the retardation factor obtained from the Kd, we predicted the BTC using CDE model and compared with the BTC of Zn concentration obtained from ICP The predicted BTC, however, disagreed with the monitored in terms of travel time and magnitude of the peak concentrations. The only way to describe the prominent decrease of Zn ion was to introduce decay or sink coefficient in the CDE model to account for irreversible decrease of Zn ions in liquid phase.e.
The sulfonated ion exchange fibers were synthesized by $Co^{60}\;{\gamma}-ray$ radiation-induced graft copolymerization. Degree of grafting was increased with increasing the total dose. The degree of grafting for POF-g-St/DVB copolymer was 1000%. The ion exchange capacity of sulfonated ion exchange fibers were increased by increasing the degree of sulfonation. Its maximum value was 5.06 meq/g. The ion exchange capacity of sulfonated POF- co-St/DVB ion exchange fiber was higher than that of the sulfonated POF- co-styrene ion exchange fibers. The amount of adsorption for heavy metals were also increased with increase in the degree of grafting of the ion exchange fibers.
In order to investigate the dispersion patterns and speciations of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd in soils, stream sediments and stream waters, geochemical studies of soil, stream sediment and stream water samples collected in the vicinity of the Shi-Heung Cu-Pb-Zn mine was carried out Cation exchange capacity measurement, size analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis and batch test were performed to select applicable soil for adsorption treatment The average content of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd in soils collected from tailings and ore dressing plant is 1084 ppm, 2292 ppm, 3512 ppm and 29.2 ppm, respectively, and therefore, tailings and ore dressing plant site may be the major contamination sources in this study area. The mean content of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd in stream sediments is extremely high up to 794 ppm, 1633 ppm, 2946 ppm and 25.2 ppm, respectively. Tailing particles and heavy metal ions are dispersed along the tributary system. Results from the sequential extraction analysis indicate; (1) most of Cu is bound to organic matters and sulphides, (2) fraction of Pb is mainly bound to Fe and Mn oxides. Most of Zn is largely bound to Fe and Mn oxides and residual fraction. Ion exchangeable fraction of Cd is relatively higher than those of Cu, Pb and Zn. Batch test on soils collected from the kaolinite and/or pyrophyllite mines and from the control areas was carried out to select an applicable soil samples for adsorption treatment The sample, S10, collected from the control area 2 (clay content 33.2%) shows the highest $K_d$ (distribution coefficient). Organic content in soils and several clay minerals shows relatively good correlation with $K_d$. It means that applicable soils for adsorption treatment of heavy metals show high organic and clay content.
The purpose of this study is to promote utilization of paper mill sludge as an adsorbent for stabilizing heavy metals in contaminated water by measuring the adsorption capacity of paper mill sludge for cadmium and arsenic. To measure adsorption capacity of paper mill sludge, sorption isotherm experiments were analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Also, two methods of chemical modifications were applied to improve the adsorption capacities of paper-mill-sludge: the first method used sodium hydroxide (NaOH), called PMS-1, and the second method used the NaOH and tartaric acid ($C_4H_6O_6$) together, called PMS-2. For Cd adsorption, PMS-1 presented the increase of reactivity while PMS-2 presented the decline of reactivity compared to that of untreated paper-mill-sludge. In case of As adsorption, both PMS-1 and PMS-2 showed the decrease of adsorption capacities. This is because zeta-potential of paper mill sludge was changed to more negative values during chemical modification process due to the hydroxyl group in NaOH and the carboxyl group in $C_4H_6O_6$, respectively. Therefore, we may conclude that the chemical treatment process increases adsorption capacity of paper mill sludge for cation heavy metals such as Cd but not for As.
The adsorption characteristics of cationic metals such as copper, cadmium, and lead onto the amorphous aluminum oxide, AMA-L, which was mineralized from raw sanding powder at $550^{\circ}C$ were investigated. Additionally, surface complexation reaction of cationic heavy metals onto AMA-L was simulated with MINEQL + software employing a diffuse layer model. From the batch adsorption tests in a single element system, the adsorption affinity of each metal ion onto AMA-L was following order: lead > copper > cadmium. In a binary system composed with copper and cadmium, quite a similar adsorption affinity was observed in each metal ion compared to the single element system. When the surface complexation constants obtained in the single system were used in the prediction of experimental adsorption results, model predictions were well fitted with experimental results of both single and binary systems.

Refuse-derived fuel (RDF) produced using municipal solid waste was pyrolyzed to produce RDF char. For the first time, the RDF char was used to remove aqueous copper, a representative heavy metal water pollutant. Activation of the RDF char using steam and KOH treatments was performed to change the specific surface area, pore volume, and the metal cation quantity of the char. N2 sorption, Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the char. The optimum pH for copper removal was shown to be 5.5, and the steam-treated char displayed the best copper removal capability. Ion exchange between copper ions and alkali/alkaline metal cations was the most important mechanism of copper removal by RDF char, followed by adsorption on functional groups existing on the char surface. The copper adsorption behavior was represented well by a pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Langmuir isotherm. The maximum copper removal capacity was determined to be 38.17 mg/g, which is larger than those of other low-cost char adsorbents reported previously.

In this study physical and chemical characteristics of rice straw ash (RSA) were analyzed in agricultural by-products such as the characteristics of soil pH, electric conductivity (EC), total phosphorus (T-P), available phosphate (Avail-P), and cation exchange capacity (CEC). The results showed that RSA is of mainly C in 95.74% and followed by Si > Al > P > Mg > K > Ca. The pH of RSA was high near 11 and the T-P concentration was $2,322.38{\pm}10.35mg/kg$. The specific surface area of RSA was $123.50m^2/g$, which was much lower than that of biochar. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that RSA were C and Si based crystalline. TCLP and KSLT test results implied that the heavy metal concentrations were below the environmental standards and would not impose the risks. T-P concentration increased from $225.59{\pm}12.69mg/kg$ to $593.39{\pm}17.36mg/kg$ along with RSA mixing ratio to soil from 0% to 15%. Both pH and EC values were increased with the increase of RSA ratio. The changes in Avail-P and CEC were not when RSA mixing ratio was 1%. whereas the Avail-P concentration was slightly increase when the mixing ratio was more than 5%. Additional investigation considering receiving soil characteristics based on the results of this study would help effective application of RSA to soil.
