Bragg-curve simulation of carbon-ion beams for particle-therapy applications: A study with the GEANT4 toolkit

  • We used the GEANT4 Monte Carlo MC Toolkit to simulate carbon ion beams incident on water, tissue, and bone, taking into account nuclear fragmentation reactions. Upon increasing the energy of the primary beam, the position of the Bragg-Peak transfers to a location deeper inside the phantom. For different materials, the peak is located at a shallower depth along the beam direction and becomes sharper with increasing electron density NZ. Subsequently, the generated depth dose of the Bragg curve is then benchmarked with experimental data from GSI in Germany. The results exhibit a reasonable correlation with GSI experimental data with an accuracy of between 0.02 and 0.08 cm, thus establishing the basis to adopt MC in heavy-ion treatment planning. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov K-S test further ascertained from a statistical point of view that the simulation data matched the experimentally measured data very well. The two-dimensional isodose contours at the entrance were compared to those around the peak position and in the tail region beyond the peak, showing that bone produces more dose, in comparison to both water and tissue, due to secondary doses. In the water, the results show that the maximum energy deposited per fragment is mainly attributed to secondary carbon ions, followed by secondary boron and beryllium. Furthermore, the number of protons produced is the highest, thus making the maximum contribution to the total dose deposition in the tail region. Finally, the associated spectra of neutrons and photons were analyzed. The mean neutron energy value was found to be 16.29 MeV, and 1.03 MeV for the secondary gamma. However, the neutron dose was found to be negligible as compared to the total dose due to their longer range.

  • As medical facilities are usually built at urban areas, special concrete aggregates and evaluation methods are needed to optimize the design of concrete walls by balancing density, thickness, material composition, cost, and other factors. Carbon treatment rooms require a high radiation shielding requirement, as the neutron yield from carbon therapy is much higher than the neutron yield of protons. In this case study, the maximum carbon energy is 430 MeV/u and the maximum current is 0.27 nA from a hybrid particle therapy system. Hospital or facility construction should consider this requirement to design a special heavy concrete. In this work, magnetite is adopted as the major aggregate. Density is determined mainly by the major aggregate content of magnetite, and a heavy concrete test block was constructed for structural tests. The compressive strength is 35.7 MPa. The density ranges from 3.65 g/cm3 to 4.14 g/cm3, and the iron mass content ranges from 53.78% to 60.38% from the 12 cored sample measurements. It was found that there is a linear relationship between density and iron content, and mixing impurities should be the major reason leading to the nonuniform element and density distribution. The effect of this nonuniformity on radiation shielding properties for a carbon treatment room is investigated by three groups of Monte Carlo simulations. Higher density dominates to reduce shielding thickness. However, a higher content of high-Z elements will weaken the shielding strength, especially at a lower dose rate threshold and vice versa. The weakened side effect of a high iron content on the shielding property is obvious at 2.5 µSv=h. Therefore, we should not blindly pursue high Z content in engineering. If the thickness is constrained to 2 m, then the density can be reduced to 3.3 g/cm3, which will save cost by reducing the magnetite composition with 50.44% iron content. If a higher density of 3.9 g/cm3 with 57.65% iron content is selected for construction, then the thickness of the wall can be reduced to 174.2 cm, which will save space for equipment installation.

군사격장 오염토양 내 고농도 중금속함유 입자의 기초특성연구 (Characterization of Heavy Metal-enriched Particles from Contaminated Soils in a Military Shooting Range)

  • 민간 및 군용사격장은 납, 구리 등의 중금속으로 오염되어 있어 복원이 필요한 경우가 많다. 산세척 또는 용출제를 이용한 용출이 흔히 사용되는 복원공법이다. 사격장 오염토양을 채취하여 오염특성 및 고비중 입자의 기여율을 조사하기 위한 기초연구를 수행하였다. 사격장 오염토양은 중금속, 특히 납으로 오염되어 있었으며, Ethylenediamine Tetra Acetic Acid(EDTA)를 이용한 5회 반복추출에도 환경기준치 이상의 오염이 토양시료에 남아 있었다. 이는 토양시료에 계속적으로 오염을 유출하는 입자가 존재하거나 오염제거가 매우 어려운 상태로 오염이 존재한다는 것을 의미한다. 토양시료에 포함된 색을 띠는 특이입자를 분리하여 분석한 결과 이들 입자는 비중이 2.5-6.6이고, 납과 EDTA의 결합율이 4.9-32%로 탄두 및 탄피가 잘게 부서진 입자로 판단되었다. 이들 입자를 제거한 토양은 오염도가 제거하기 전 토양에 비하여 낮으며, 용출 등의 기술로 쉽게 오염이 제거될 수 있음을 보여주었다. 이러한 결과는 연속추출 및 TCLP 등의 연구에서 증명되었다.

  • Broadband impedances for the 3-GeV pohang light source-II (PLS-II) storage ring have been numerically estimated using a full three dimensional finite-difference time-domain code, CST particle studio. The total broadband impedance of all the vacuum components was estimated as 0.256 ohm, which is a small fraction of the total machine impedance budget.

Evolution of the Vortex Melting Line with Irradiation Induced Defects

  • Our experimental research focuses on manipulating pinning deflects to alter the phase diagram of vortex matter, creating new vortex phases. Vortex matter offers a unique opportunity for creating and studying these novel phase transitions through precise control of thermal, pinning and elastic energies. The vortex melting transition in untwinned YB $a_2$C $u_3$ $O_{7-}$ $\delta$/ crystals is investigated in the presence of disorder induced by particle irradiation. We focus on the low disorder regime, where a glassy state and a lattice state can be realized in the same phase diagram. We follow the evolution of the first order vortex melting transition line into a continuous transition line as disorder is increased by irradiation. The transformation is marked by an upward shift in the lower critical point on the melting line. With columnar deflects induced by heavy ion irradiation, we find a second order Bose glass transition line separating the vortex liquid from a Bose glass below the lower critical point. Furthermore, we find an upper threshold of columnar defect concentration beyond which the lower critical point and the first order melting line disappear together. With point deflect clusters induced by proton irradiation, we find evidence for a continuous thermodynamic transition below the lower critical point..

Recent Activities in Space Environment Engineerings in Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency

  • Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has measured space environment and its effects on spacecraft and astronaut since 1987. At present, we have operated space environment monitors onboard one GEO spacecraft, one QZO spacecraft, and two LEO spacecrafts. The obtained space environment data has been gathered into the Space Environment and Effects System database (SEES, http://sees.tksc.jaxa.jp/). In this presentation, measurement result of space environment in low earth orbit obtained by the Daichi satellite from 2006 through 2011 is reported as well as recent activities in space environment engineerings in JAXA. The Technical Data Acquisition Equipment (TEDA) on board the Daichi satellite (Advanced Land Observing Satellite: ALOS) had been operated in low earth orbit at 700 km altitude with 98 degree inclination from February 2006 until April 2011. The TEDA consists of the Light Particle Telescope and the Heavy Ion Telescope. The operation period of the Daichi satellite was through the solar-activity minimum period. The space radiation environment around the Daichi satellite had been almost stable. However, large solar flares followed by CMEs sometimes disturbed the space radiation environment in the orbit of the Daichi satellite. In addition, high speed solar wind often flowed and modulated the electron flux in the horn region. On the other hand, a little variation was seen in the SAA region.

  • 부유된 광물성 미립자는 강, 저수지 그리고 호수의 유속 및 운송력이 감소하는 곳에서 침전되며, 다른 중금속들에 의해 오염된다. 그 실예들이 퇴적물의 준설, 수질오염, 운하 및 수공구조물의 유지관리의 문제이다. 이런 침전 문제들을 다루기 위해선 물에 녹아있는 이온(NaOH, HCl, NaCl)의 첨가 및 밀도의 변화 아래 점착성 퇴적물의 물리-화학적인 특성의 이해가 필요하다. 왜냐하면 미립자인 점착성 퇴적물은 물리-화학적인 영향 때문에 쉽게 응집현상이 일어나며, 다른 특성을 갖게 되기 때문이다. 본 실험은 광물성 미립자(alumina 와 Quartz)를 가지고 담수 및 염분을 함유한 침강수주 안에서 실시되었다. 정수 중에 부유된 미립자의 침강속도는 압력센서(최대 10 mbar)로 측정되었다. 초기 농도 20,000 mg/l)까지 quartz의 침강 속도는 증가하였으며, 그 후 감소하였다. Quartz의 침강 속도는 산성에서 강한 응집현상 때문에 증가하였으며 알칼리성에서는 낮게 측정되었다. 그러나 alumina의 침강 속도는 그 정반대의 현상을 보였다.

황사발원지 (몽골) 토양에 대한 특성 분석 (A Study on the Characteristics of Soil in the Asian Dust Source Regions of Mongolia)

  • This study aims to identify the characteristics of soil in Mongolia, one of the major Asian dust sources that influence the Korean Peninsula. Soil particle size was analyzed and the result shows that sand (57.5~97.3%) was identified prominently in most regions, followed by silt (2.5~34.7%) and clay (0.0~7.8%). Soil pH of the covered regions were in the range 7.1~10.1, either weak alkaline or strong alkaline. Analysis of ion species in the soil samples exhibited that $Na^+$ ($91.9\;mg\;kg^{-1}$), $Cl^-$ ($65.9\;mg\;kg^{-1}$), and $Ca^{2+}$ ($53.5\;mg\;kg^{-1}$) were detected more in the soil than other species such as ${SO_4}^{2-}$ ($19.2\;mg\;kg^{-1}$), ${NO_3}^-$ ($46.6\;mg\;kg^{-1}$), ${NH_4}^+$ ($3.9\;mg\;kg^{-1}$), $K^+$ ($22.0\;mg\;kg^{-1}$), and $Mg^{2+}$ ($10.2\;mg\;kg^{-1}$). As for heavy metal content in the soil, concentrations of soil-borne metals including Fe, Al, Ca, Mg, and K tended to be high, while metals that come from manmade sources Pb, Cd, Cr, V, and Ni were remarkably low. The concentration of organic carbon (OC) was relatively high at $15.9\;{\mu}g\;mg^{-1}$, while elemental carbon (EC), directly released in the process of fossil fuel combustion, was not detected at all or found in very small amounts. The result indicates that pollution from manmade sources scarcely occurred. The analysis results from this study may contribute to improving modeling accuracy by providing input data for Asian dust prediction models, and be used as base data for determining the process of physiochemical transformation of Asian dust during long-range transport.

새만금간척지 지역 대기 중 초미세먼지 (PM2.5) 오염 특성 평가 (Characteristics of Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) in the Atmosphere of Saemangum Reclaimed Land Area)

  • To understand the distribution characteristics of PM2.5 concentration in the Saemangeum Reclamation Area and nearby areas, three points of the background area, the occurrence area, and the affected area were selected and samples were collected for each season. The chemical composition was determined. As a result of analyzing the chemical composition contained in PM2.5, NO3- (7.2 ㎍/m3), SO42- (4.3 ㎍/m3), NH4+ (4.3 ㎍/m3), OC (2.5 ㎍/m3), Si (1.3 ㎍/m3) m3) and EC (0.5 ㎍/m3) seemed to be the main components, and NO3-, SO42-, NH4+, which are components that form secondary particles, occupied a large proportion. The composition ratio of PM2.5 was investigated in the order of ion component (56.8%) > Unknown (27.4%) > carbon component (11.8%) > heavy metal component (4.0%). During the PM2.5 high concentration case days, the ionic component accounted for 90.7% during atmospheric stagnation cases, whereas the chemical composition ratio was in the order of ionic component (51.7%) > heavy metal component (41.5%) > carbon component (6.8%) during yellow dust cases. It was found that the characteristic of PM2.5 in the Saemangeum reclaimed land and surrounding areas is mainly influenced by outside (domestic and overseas) throughout the year. Ion components accounted for the largest portion of PM2.5 components in this area, but there were few sources of SOx and NOx emission in the Seamangeum area, which are precursors for secondary particle formation. Therefore, it is judged that most of these are generated and influenced as a secondary reaction in the atmosphere from the outside.

400 MeV/nucleon 12C 이온의 MCNPX 와 핵자료를 이용한 차폐 벤치마킹 계산 (400 MeV/nucleon 12C Ions Shielding Benchmark Calculations using MCNPX with Different Nuclear Data Libraries)

  • 현재 우리나라는 포항방사광가속기와 국립암센터의 양성자 치료용 가속기와 경주 양성자 가속기가 운영되고 있고 중이온 가속기, 4세대 방사광가속기 등 대형가속기 시설이 건설 중에 있다. 이들 시설에서 고에너지로 가속된 입사입자는 표적물질과 상호작용 후 2차 중성자를 발생시키고, 이 중성자는 가속기 구조물 및 주변 콘크리트, 토양, 지하수 등을 방사화 시킨다. 따라서 이러한 가속기 시설의 안전적 측면을 고려할 때 방사화를 일으키는 중성자의 차폐가 중요하다. 본 연구는 차폐해석에 사용되는 몬테카를로 코드 중 MCNPX를 이용하여 $^{12}C$ beam빔과 표적물질(Cu)과의 상호작용 후 생성되는 중성자를 계산하고, 그 중성자의 철 차폐체와 콘크리트 차폐체의 두께별 투과 후 스펙트럼을 MCNPX의 JENDL/HE 07과 la150을 이용해 비교하여 계산하였다. 빔의 방향과 차폐체의 종류 및 두께에 따라 그 결과를 실험값과 비교하여 검증함으로써 핵자료의 특성을 확인하였으며 향후 대형가속기시설의 선량평가용 기반기술로 활용하고자 하였다.
