A study on the Stable Supply of Fishery Oil in Korea (어업용 유류의 안정적인 공급에 관한 연구)

  • The policy of suppling tax-exempt fishery oil in Korea has a history of almost 40 years, which was initiated by the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives in 1965. In 1999 the volume of fishery oil supplied to the earning fishermen and fishing entrepreneurs amounted to 8,390 thousand DM, 500 billion won in total. This paper analyzes the oil supplying system to fishermen in Korea and shows that the structural obstacles to the stable provision of fishery oil lies in the ineffective bargaining power (fixing price). Provided that the NFFC as a buyer, which is not equipped with the storage facilities for oil bids for a unit-price contract of fishery oil, there exists a possibility of collusion among 5 local oil refineries corporations to influence the oil price, making it difficult to reach a resonable price of oil. Though the international bids and direct imports following the liberalization of oil imports would help lower the unit price, purchasing and importing the oil out of season at a lower price would not be guaranteed without the oil storage facilities. Furthermore, the current supply system of oil is quite vulnerable to the extraneous factors and, say when the oil price soars unpredictably, it is almost impossible to supply low - priced fishery oil to fishermen. The National Federation of Fisheries Association of Japan(Zengyoren), for instance, possesses 10 oil storage facilities, which had been built across the country during the last 20 years (1964-1984). The storage capacity of these facilities reaches 0.6million DM(by kind, 0.56million DM for A heavy oil, 38thousand D/M kerosene, 5thousand D/M for diesel fuel oil). Allowing no intermediary of production associations(fisheries cooperatives) the NFFA's capacity for keeping oil in reserve rises much higher. As these storage facilities can keep the oil amounting to as much as of 70 days demand in reserve, a stable supply of fishery oil on favorable terms is secured. In contrast with Japan case, unequipped with the storage facilities for fishery oil, Korea does not have much bargaining power for bringing down the price of fishery oil. To make matters worse, the oil storing capacity of the member cooperatives is the volume of only 8 days demand. In case the oil price rises, it is almost impossible to supply the oil to the fishermen at a price lower than the price risen.

The Primary Research on oil Conversion Technology of biomass by Pyrolysis (열분해에 의한 바이오매스의 유류자원화 기술에 관한 기초 연구)

  • This study aims to develop an alternative energy like oil made from marine organic waste by marine products waste, spent fishing nets. There are already many commercial examples and case studies based on the petroleum industry-refuse plastic or refuse tire, however, it is rare that a research developing alternative energy from food waste and organic waste. Therefore, this study investigated the oil made from thermal decomposition under the high temperature and high pressure condition, and examined the possibility for commercial use by testing its own characteristics. A bio-oil from thermal decomposition at $250^{\circ}C$ and 40 atm was hard to remove impurities because of its high viscosity, showed lower caloric value than heavy oil, and generated various gases which were not appropriate for the use of fuel. It is noticeable that thermal decomposition was occurred at $250{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ using steam pressure, which much lower compared to the existing method of thermal decomposition, more than $500^{\circ}C$. Since the high viscosity of bio-oil, it is necessary a further study to use as liquid fuel.

  • A CFD (Computational fluid Dynamics) research is conducted for the investigation of the fuel alteration of MBTU (medium-Btu) gas in IGCC gas turbine combustor. The computational analysis method of the gas turbine combustor is constructed by incorporating MBTU gas reaction and fuel NOx models into commercial CFD code. With the use of the present analysis method, comparisons are made on the flow velocity, the chemical species and the temperature distributions, and on the flame shape and behavior of gas turbine combustor firing natural gas and MBTU gases (coal gas, heavy residue oil gas). Furthermore, the NOx formation characteristics and the turbine matching condition of the combustor are analyzed. Based on the computed analysis results, the present study provides the directions for the redesign and the design modification of IGCC gas turbine combustor firing MBTU gas as alternative fuel.

  • With respect to the goal of achieving at least 50[%] reduction of global emissions by 2050, the G8 leaders agreed to seek to share and adopt it with all Parties to the UNFCCC in the 34th Group of Eight Summit held in Toyako, Japan in July 2008. Korea is also expected to obey the Kyoto Protocol starting in 2013, which will result in a serious shock especially to the electric power industry. The power plants burning the fossil fuel produce more than 20 percent of national $CO_2$ emission. This paper presents an economic feasibility study on fuel transfer for a thermal power plant considering $CO_2$ emission cost. Calculation of the breakeven point for the fuel transfer from LNG to heavy oil of D power plant is demonstrated using the input-output coefficients obtained by the performance test.

  • Biodiesels are well-known as alternative fuels. also we know that biodiesels increase NOx and reduce PM(Particulate Matter) by previous many studies. But PM in most these studies was considered about the mass. In this study, We have performed experimental test for PM and exhaust emission by mixed ratio of biodiesel in heavy duty diesel engine. PM was investigated by The nano particle number and the mass. The mass of PM was evaluated by using the standard gravimetric method, The number of PM was evaluated by using the EEPS(Engine Exhaust Particle Sizer), on the ESC(European Steady Cycle) mode. Sampled gas through dilutor was directly extracted from tail pipe and EEPS measured diluted exhaust gas. Biodiesel is made up of used cooking oil. Diesel as base fuel was sold on market and contains 2% biodiesel. The mass of PM was reduced 10% and the nano particle number was increased 5%. The particle number less than 40nm was increased, but the particle number more than 40nm is decreased.

Twisted rudder for reducing fuel-oil consumption

  • Three twisted rudders fit for large container ships have been developed; 1) the Z-twisted rudder that is an asymmetry type taking into consideration incoming flow angles of the propeller slipstream, 2) the ZB-twisted rudder with a rudder bulb added onto the Z-twisted rudder, and 3) the ZB-F twisted rudder with a rudder fin attached to the ZB-twisted rudder. The twisted rudders have been designed computationally with the hydrodynamic characteristics in a self-propulsion condition in mind. The governing equation is the Navier-Stokes equations in an unsteady turbulent flow. The turbulence model applied is the Reynolds stress. The calculation was carried out in towing and self-propulsion conditions. The sliding mesh technique was employed to simulate the flow around the propeller. The speed performances of the ship with the twisted rudders were verified through model tests in a towing tank. The twisted versions showed greater performance driven by increased hull efficiency from less thrust deduction fraction and more effective wake fraction and decreased propeller rotating speed.

Recovery of Lipids from Chlorella sp. KR-1 via Pyrolysis and Characteristics of the Pyrolysis Oil (Chlorella sp. KR-1 열분해에 의한 지질 회수 및 열분해 오일 특성 분석)

  • Lipids in microalgal biomass were recovered by using pyrolysis method. The pyrolysis experiments of two Chlorella sp. KR-1 samples, which have triglyceride contents of 10.8% and 36.5%, respectively were carried out at $600^{\circ}C$ to investigate the effects of lipid contents in the cells on the reaction characteristics. The conversion and liquid yield of the lipid-rich sample were higher than those of the lipid-lean sample since its carbon to hydrogen ratio was low. There were low molecular weight organic acids, ketones, aldehydes and alcohols in the liquid products from both KR-1 samples, but the pyrolysis oil of the lipid-rich sample was abundant in free fatty acids, particularly palmitic acid, oleic acid and stearic acid while the content of nitrogen containing organic compounds was low. The microalgal pyrolysis oil had two layers composed of the light hydrophobic fraction and the heavy hydrophilic fraction. The light fraction might be originated from triglycerides and the heavy fraction might be from carbohydrates and proteins. In the light fraction of the liquid products, there were considerable linear alkanes such as pentadecane and heptadecane as well as free fatty acids, implying that deoxygenation reaction including decarboxylation was occurred during the pyrolysis. The yield of the liquid products from the pyrolysis of the KR-1 sample having triglyceride content of 36.5% was 56.9% and the light fraction in the liquid products was 68.2%. Also more than 80% of the light fraction was free fatty acids and pure hydrocarbons, thus showing that most triglycerides could be extracted in the form of suitable raw materials for biofuels.

A Study on the Effect of the Heeled and Trimmed Conditions on Propulsive Performance of VLCC (대형유조선의 저항추진성능에 미치는 자세변화의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • In recent years, many environmentally disastrous maritime accidents resulted from oil or fuel spills from damaged vessels. The situation becomes worse especially when the early counter treatment is not prompt enough. To properly handle this type of accidents and prevent further disasters, the propulsive performance of damaged vessels must be better understood for salvage operations, as well as for containing oil spills while the vessels are being towed or self-propelled. Until now, many hydrodynamic studies have focused on the propulsive performance of undamaged vessels but only a few studies on that of damaged vessels. in this paper, both experimental and computational methods are used to study the propulsive performance of a VLCC in heeled and/or trimmed conditions. For experimental studies, measurement systems should be modified to adapt to the variations of attitude of a damaged vessel. For numerical studies, CFD programs should be also extended to be applied to asymmetrically floating conditions.

Research for Pyrolysis of Metal Caps (병뚜껑의 열분해에 대한 연구)

  • The application of metal caps has been continuously increased as real life are extended. Metal caps is usually made of aluminum and polyethylene(PE) as packing. Since metal caps contain 75% aluminum on a weight basis, metal caps may be a valuable source when these were properly recovered. The recovery methods of metal caps have mechanical peeling and incineration. However these are either hard to apply in some case or environmentally unacceptable. So in this investigation, recovery method of aluminum from metal caps was investigated using pyrolysis. The result shows that pyrolysis temperature and pyrolysis time was $450^{\circ}C$ and 120min. respectively. Also 100% of aluminum was recovered from metal caps. Heat content of recovered oil was high enough to use as a fuel representing 7,425.0, 7,793.1, 7,583.2, 7,726.2(cal/g). Heavy metal contens in the oil were under regulatory limit indicating.

On the Improvement of the Combustibility of Waste Plastics used in Blast Furnace

  • A possibility of using waste plastics as a source of secondary fuel in blast furnace has been of recent interest. The success of this process, however, will be critically dependent upon the optimization of operating systems. for instance, the supply of waste plastics must be reliable as well as economically attractive compared with conventional secondary fuels such as heavy oil, natural gas and pulverized coal. In this work, we put special importance on the improvement of the combustibility of waste plastics as a way to enhance energy efficiency in blast furnace. As experimental variables to approach this target, the effects of plastic particle size, blast temperature, and the level of oxygen enrichment were investigated using a custom-made blast model designed to simulate a real furnace. Lastly, the combustion efficiency of the mixture of waste plastics and pulverized coal was tested. The observations made from these experiments led us to the conclusion that with the increase of both blast temperature and the level of oxygen enrichment, and with the decrease of particle size, the combustibility of waste PE could be improved at a given distance from tuyere. Also it was found that the efficiency of coal combustion decreased with the addition of plastics; however, the combustion efficiency of mixture could be comparable at longer distance from tuyere.
