  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate behavior of surface oxidation with steel type. The excess entalphy combustion in porous media system was applied to implement the direct radiation heating system. The surface oxidation thickness (SOT) in fuel-lean condition was thicker than the SOT in fuel-rich. Also, the SOT was increased by increasing residence time. Detailed explanations were given by SEM and EDS analysis.

  • Experiments were performed on the laminar premixed flame stabilized in a porous medium to know whether the flame downstream of the combustor exists or not. In previous theoretical studies, a stable flame has been predicted in the downstream region of the combustor, but it has never been observed in experiments. In this study, a stable downstream flame could be obtained for the lower burning velocity through circumferential heating by a blue flame positioned outside the periphery of the specially devised combustor. The existence of the stable downstream flame was confirmed by a direct photography of soot line, and temperature measurements. The effect of combustor diameter to flame stability was also considered. As the diameter of the combustor increases, the lean flammability limit was extended.

  • The main purpose of this study is as follows : Finding a solution for fresh wood chips to be used as an alternative growing-media through a study of the formation method of a compost base that is applicable on both construction site and composting factory to ferment fresh wood chips produced from construction site as well as a study on adjuvant or secondary materials. The result from the experiment plot using wood chips sized 50mm or less, manure and fertilizer mixed manure as a source of nitrogen to compost fresh wood chips has shown that the temperatures 9days and 3days after the beginning of the experiment reached to $49.0^{\circ}C$ and $40.4^{\circ}C$ respectively, the heating duration was 7days and 4days respectively, and the C/N ratio was 26.5 and 25.3, each satisfying the standard for composted manure (25.0~40.0). Also, the other result from another experiment plot using mixture of sandy soil and microorganism as an inoculation source of microorganism has shown that the temperature 10days after the beginning of the experiment reached to $67.6^{\circ}C$ and lasted 16days. The experiment plot using sandy soil has shown the highest figure of $5.3{\sim}108$ CFU/g in terms of number of microorganism. The result from the experiment plots for on-site composting of fresh wood chips have shown that the experiment plot that used sandy soil with fertilizer due to supply restriction of manure as a nitrogen source in construction site reached the high temperature of $54.7^{\circ}C$ after 3days of experiment beginning and maintained heating state for 17days and reached 30.6 of C/N ratio, satisfying the standard for composted manure.

  • The viability of Shigella sonnei, a significant cause of gastroenteritis in Korea, on TSA plates was determined after sublethal heating treatments and NaCl treatments. In addition, recovery levels of sublethally injured cells on TSA plates containing different concentrations of NaCl (TSAS) were investigated. The viability decreased significantly with increasing degree of sublethal heating treatments, but increases in NaCI treatment concentration from 0 to 6% had little effect on the viability. After being sublethally treated at $55^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, bacterial populations were reduced by 7.58, 7.83 and 7.93 log CFU/mL on 2, 4, and 6% TSAS, respectively. After being sublethally treated at $60^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, bacterial populations were reduced by 6.71, 6.73, and 6.73 log CFU/mL on 2, 4 and 6% TSAS, respectively. Decimal reduction times (D-values) decreased with increasing NaCl treatment concentrations after sublethal heating at 55 or $60^{\circ}C$. These data imply that the S. sonnei cells sublethally injured by insufficient heating processes had a lower recovery rate with increasing NaCl concentrations in the recovery media.

  • The computational fluid dynamic analysis has been conducted for the thermo-chemical flow field in an arcjet thruster with mono-propellant hydrazine ($N_{2}H_4$) as a working fluid. Coupled Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and Maxwell equations were used to account for the Ohm heating and Lorentz forces. Hydrazine chemistry and thermal radiation were also incorporated to the fluid dynamic equations by assuming infinitely-fast reactions and optically thick media. In addition to the thermo-physical understandings of the flow field inside the arcjet thruster, results shows that performance indices are improved by amount of $20\%$ in thrust and $200\%$ in specific impulse with the 0.6kW are heating.

  • Experiments were performed to measure the critical heat flux (CHF) on a vertical surface abutting a coarse packed bed of spherical particles. This geometry is representative of a CANDU reactor calandria tubesheet facing the end shield cavity during the in-vessel retention (IVR) phase of a severe accident. Deionized light water was used as the working fluid. Low carbon steel shielding balls with diameters ranging from 6.4 to 12.7 mm were used, allowing for the development of an empirical correlation of CHF as a function of shielding ball diameter. Previously published data is used to develop a more comprehensive empirical correlation accounting for the impacts of both shielding ball diameter and heating surface height. Tests using borosilicate shielding balls demonstrated that the dependence of CHF on shielding ball thermal conductivity is insignificant. The deposition of iron oxide particles transported from shielding balls to the heating surface is verified to increase CHF non-trivially. The results presented in this paper improve the state of the knowledge base permitting quantitative prediction of CHF in the CANDU end shield, refining our ability to assess the feasibility of IVR. The findings clarify the mechanisms governing CHF in this scenario, permitting identification of potential future research directions.

  • In the previous paper, we reported that the bacteriostatic effect of condensed phosphate. The present study was intended to observe influence of various environmental factors on the bacteriostatic effect of condensed phosphates in the laboratory media, in order to get the information on the possibility to use the phosphate as food preservative. Bacteriostatic effect of sodium polyphosphate was not reduced by the heating at 100 for 1 hour, but it was considerably decreased by heating at $121^{\circ}C$ for 15 min and the phosphate sensitivity of bacteria was increased by freezing and heating. On the other hand, the strong bacteriostatic activity of condensed phosphate was observed below pH 6.5 in nutrient broth culture, and the activity was decreased by the addition of $CaCl_2$, KCl and $MgSO_4$.

  • Treatments of irradiation alone and/or in combination with heat were investigated for the sterilization of Escherichia coli O157: H7. D values of the strain were 129.2 min at $50^{\circ}C$, 27.1 min at $55^{\circ}C$, and 2.4 min at $60^{\circ}C$. The survival effect of E. coli O157:H7 during heating at various media was investigated. On heating at temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ for 10 min, the strain was generally more resistant in the media containg such chemical substrates such as 0.03 M cysteine, 1% sodium citrate or 5% sucrose, whereas this strain was appeared weaker in the chemical substrates added group such as 1% meat extract, 1% casein or 1% casamino acid. In the case of irradiation alone, $D_{10}$ value of E. coli O157:H7 was 0.116 kGy, and inactivation factors were $17{\sim}25$ at doses of 2 to 3 kGy. Pre-and post-irradiation heating showed the same $D_{10}$ value about 0.07 kGy. And Inactivation factors were $25{\sim}41$ at doses of 2 to 3 kGy. Therefore, combination treatment with heat and irradiation significantly increased in inactivation rate by increasing radiation sensitivity of E. coli O157:H7.

  • Recently, energy consumption for heating costs, which is 35% of smart farm energy costs, has increased, requiring energy consumption efficiency, and the importance of new and renewable energy is increasing due to concerns about the realization of electricity bills. Renewable energy belongs to hydropower, wind, and solar power, of which solar energy is a power generation technology that converts it into electrical energy, and this technology has less impact on the environment and is simple to maintain. In this study, based on the greenhouse heat storage tank and heat pump data, the factors that affect the heat storage tank are selected and a heat storage tank supply temperature prediction model is developed. It is predicted using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), which is effective for time series data analysis and prediction, and XGBoost model, which is superior to other ensemble learning techniques. By predicting the temperature of the heat pump heat storage tank, energy consumption may be optimized and system operation may be optimized. In addition, we intend to link it to the smart farm energy integrated operation system, such as reducing heating and cooling costs and improving the energy independence of farmers due to the use of solar power. By managing the supply of waste heat energy through the platform and deriving the maximum heating load and energy values required for crop growth by season and time, an optimal energy management plan is derived based on this.
