  • The research was conducted to understand type of iron used by those who lived at dwelling site of Yangsoo-ri in between the first century B.C. and the first century A.D. to make steel products and their technique such as steel making process and heat treatment, based on micro structure information obtained through microscopic metallographic structure analysis with SEM-EDS of six steel productsexhumed at the site. Key findings are summarized as below. In the sense that Si-Ca-Al style and less than 0.5% of Ti were found in the non-metallic inclusion, the material used for forged iron ware was magnetite resolved in that. It is, however, unclear whether magnetite was resolved at high temperature or at low temperature. Microscopic structure analysis revealed that forged steel products were made through repeated hot working, the technique of molding by hitting after heating in the process of resolving and molding iron. As a result, the iron used here for the products was not the iron ore which was produced through resolution from discarded cast iron axe, ingot iron. It is probable that to make those steel products, disposed-of cast iron was reused after being molded by decarburizing. Although a few of relics were analyzed for the research, they were of critical importance in defining the process of ironware production from the first century B.C. and the first century A.D. at the Yangsoo-ri region. Judging from the iron from A-19 dwellingsite, it is possible to conclude that the iron was manufactured from cast iron decarburized and yet more research has to be done into relics yetto be exhumed in order to ascertain the finding. All of these findings are believed to play a critical role in further studies to define the steel-manufacturing technique used on the central Korean peninsular in the ancient times.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the performance of a latent heat storage system using paraffin wax as the phase change material. A thermosyphon was employed to transfer heat from the hot ethylene glycol flowing across the evaporator section of the thermosyphon into the wax. In order to increase the effective thermal conductivity of wax, layers of copper wire mesh were immersed in the wax. Experiments were run for volume ratios of 2%, 3%, and 4%, varying mass flow rate of ethylene glycol in each case. Some of the important results are as follows : (1) The wire mesh enhanced the conductive hea transfer and thus, helped even out the temperature distribution in the wax : (2) The increase of the number of layers of wire mesh increased the conduction. However, it also resulted in increasing the resistance to the convective motion of liquefied wax : and (3) There is an optimal number of layers of wire mesh, maximizing the performance of the storage system, which occurred at a volume ratio of $3{\sim}4%$ in the present study.

  • This study presents experimental and numerical results of the temperature characteristics, the heat transfer phenomema, and the heat storage quantity during the heat storage process with sodium phyrophosphate decahydrate($Na_4P_2O_7{\cdot}10H_2O$)-Phase Change Material(PCM) in a latent heat storage tank(cubic type). It was proved that heat transfer by conduction was dominant because PCM($Na_4P_2O_7{\cdot}10H_2O$) during heating processes was gel phase, not liquid phase The gap ratio(rate of air content) of PCM became smaller, the thermal capacity of PCM became larger, therefore the temperature distribution of PCM slowly increased than that of large gap ratio. There was maximum 15% difference between measured temperatures and calculated temperatures.

  • The thermal performance of storage brick, containing microencapsulated PCM(phase change material), was investigated for utilization as a floor heating system. Sodium acetate trihydrate($CH_3COONa{\cdot}3H_2O$) was selected for the PCM and was encapsulated. The thermal storage brick was manufactured with mixing cement mortar having 10%, 20% PCM contents, respectively. Four different flow rates and three different cooling temperatures was used in this work for analyzing the heat charging and discharging characteristics of the thermal storage brick. The result showed that cycle time was shortened as the PCM content was increased and as the mass flow rate was increased. The same effect was obtained when the cooling temperature was decreased. For each thermal storage brick the overall heat transfer coefficient(U-value) was constant for a 0% brick, but was increased with time for the bricks containing microencapsulated PCM.

  • Recently, the effects of high temperature on compressive strength, elastic modulus and strain at peak stress of high strength concrete were experimentally investigated. The present study is aimed to study the effect of elevated temperatures ranging from 20 to $700^{\circ}C$ on the material mechanical properties of high-strength concrete of 40, 60, 80MPa grade. In this study, the types of test were the stressed test and stressed residual test that the specimens are subjected to a 25% of ultimate compressive strength at room temperature and sustained during heating and when target temperature is reached, the specimens are loaded to failure. Or specimens are loaded to failure after 24hour cooling time. tests were conducted at various temperatures ($20{\sim}700^{\circ}C$) for concretes made with W/B ratios 46%, 32% and 25%. Test results showed that the relative values of compressive strength and elastic modulus decreased with increasing compressive strength grade of specimen.

  • This study measured temperatures and albedos of urban surfaces for different colors and materials during summer, and calculated the energy budget over different urban surfaces to find out the thermal performance affecting the heat built-up. The study selected six surface colors and 13 materials common in urban landscape. Their surface temperatures (Ts) and albedos were measured at a given time interval in the daytime from June to August. Average Ts over summer season for asphalt-colored brick was $4.0^{\circ}C$ higher than that for light red-colored one and $9.7^{\circ}C$ higher than that for white-colored one. The Ts for artificial surface materials of asphalt paving, brown brick wall, and green concrete wall was $6.0^{\circ}C$ higher than that for natural and semi-natural ones of grass, grassy block, and planted concrete wall. There was the greatest difference of $16.3^{\circ}C$ at midafternoon in the Ts between asphalt paving and planted concrete wall. Average albedo over summer season of surface materials ranged from 0.08 for asphalt paving to 0.67 for white concrete wall. This difference in the albedo was associated with a maximum of $15.7^{\circ}C$ difference at midafternoon in the Ts. Increasing the albedo by 0.1 (from 0.22 to 0.32) reduced the Ts by about $1.3^{\circ}C$. Average storage heat at midday by natural and semi-natural surfaces of grass and grassy block was about 10% lower than that by artificial ones of asphalt, light-red brick, and concrete. Reflected radiation, which ultimately contributes to heating the urban atmosphere, was 3.7 times greater for light-red brick and concrete surfaces than for asphalt surface. Thus, surfaces with in-between tone and color are more effective than dark- or white-colored ones, and natural or semi-natural surfaces are much greater than artificial ones in improving the urban thermal environment. This study provides new information on correlation between Ts and air temperature, relationship between albedo and Ts, and the energy budget.

  • The effects of water addition on $Y_2O_3$ coatings or thick films prepared by plasma suspension spray (SPS) have been investigated. Water addition in suspension media was found to be effective to control the color of a $Y_2O_3$ coating prepared by SPS. The color changed with water addition at the shortest stand-off distance of 50 mm even if samples had the same crystalline phase. Change was not correlated with fragmentation behavior of liquid suspension inside the plasma jet. Water content over 50 vol% was found to produce unmelted particles, indicating that water suppressed heat transfer to the particles. However, plasma jet temperature was not affected. Instead, the coating fabricated with water addition has higher oxygen and lower carbon content compared to these characteristics of the coating without water addition. This was attributed to the retarded complete evaporation of liquid media from the suspension droplet, resulting in inhibition of excessive heating and evaporation of the molten $Y_2O_3$ droplet. In this regard, crystalline phase development with respect to stand-off distance and water addition was discussed.

  • After recycle of spent materials has been optimised, there remains a proportion of waste which must be dealt with in the most environmentally friendly manner available. For materials such as municipal waste, clinical waste, toxic waste and special wastes such as tyres, incineration is often the most appropriate technology. The study of incineration must take a process system approach covering the following aspects: ${\bullet}$ Collection and blending of waste, ${\bullet}$ The two stage combustion process, ${\bullet}$ Quenching, scrubbing and polishing of the flue gases, ${\bullet}$ Dispersion of the flue gases and disposal of any solid or liquid effluent. The design of furnaces for the burning of a bed of material is being hampered by lack of an accurate mathematical model of the process and some semi-empirical correlations have to be used at present. The prediction of the incinerator gas phase flow is in a more advanced stage of development using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, although further validation data is still required. Unfortunately, it is not possible to scale down many aspects of waste incineration and tests on full scale incinerators are essencial. Thanks to a close relationship between SUWIC and Sheffield Heat&Power Ltd., an extended research programme has been carried out ar the Bernard Road Incinerator plant in Sheffield. This plant consists of two Municipal(35 MW) and two Clinical (5MW) Waste Incinerators which provide district heating for a large part of city. The heat is distributed as hot water to commercial, domestic ( >5000 dwelling) and industrial buildings through 30km of 14" pipes plus a smaller pipe distribution system. To improve the economics, a 6 MW generator is now being added to the system.
