  • Laser sealing with glass frits appears a promising technology for sealing various electronic devices (e.g., solar cells, displays) due to its several advantages. The purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between the composition of glasses and their laser-heating conditions. To allow glass to be sealed using laser heating, CuO was added to two different glass systems, in different amounts. The optical absorptivity of the glass samples was related directly to their CuO content. The laser-heating temperature and the CuO content exhibited a proportional relationship. Furthermore, the heating temperature increased linearly with the laser power used. From these results, we could determine the appropriate laser-heating conditions and CuO content for sealing electronic devices using laser-sealing technology.

  • This work provides the fundamental knowledge of energy transport characteristics during very short-pulse laser heating of semiconductors from a microscopic viewpoint. Based on the self-consistent hydrodynamic equations, in-situ interactions between carriers, optical phonons, and acoustic phonons are simulated to figure out energy transport mechanism during ultrafast pulse laser heating of a silicon substrate through the detailed information on the time and spatial evolutions of each temperature for carriers, longitudinal optical (LO) phonons, acoustic phonons. It is found that nonequilibrium between LO phonons and acoustic phonons should be considered for ultrafast pulse laser heating problem, two-peak structures become apparently present for the subpicosecond pulses because of the Auger heating. A substantial increase in carrier temperature is observed for lasers with a few picosecond pulse duration, whereas the temperature rise of acoustic and phonon temperatures is relatively small with decreasing laser pulse widths. A slight lagging behavior is observed due to the differences in relaxation times and heat capacities between two different phonons. Moreover, the laser fluence has a significant effect on the decaying rate of the Auger recombination.

  • A new printing process for LCD color filter is proposed in this work by using the localized laser heating, which is called laser-induced spray printing (LISP) process. The LISP is a non-contact process, which injects the ink from the donor substrate to the glass substrate by the bubble pressure induced by laser heating. The temperature distribution of the donor substrate is calculated numerically to explain the ink ejection phenomena. The composition of the ink was includes the red pigment, n-butanol, xylene, BCA and epoxy. Experiments were conducted by using the fiber laser system, and the color filter patterns were deposited successfully under the proper laser heating conditions.

  • Recently, the demand for the development of high quality and high-speed laser printers and efficient power utilization has required. Among complicated electro-mechanic devices in laser printers, the toner-fusing unit consumes above 90[%] of all electrical energy needed for printing devices. Therefore, the development of a more effective energy-saving toner fusing process becomes a significant task in great demand. Generally, there are several ways to implement a fusing unit. Among them this paper presents a new induction heating method. The proposed induction heating method enables the increase of coupling coefficient between heating coil and heat roller which also increases total energy transfer efficiency. Therefore, the proposed IH (Induction Heating) inverter system provides very fast W.U.T. (Warm UP Time) as well as higher efficiency. Through experimental results, the proposed control system is verified.

  • In recent years, matrix-free laser desorption ionization (LDI) for mass spectrometry of thermally labile molecules has been an important research subject in the pursuit of new ionization methods to serve as alternatives to the conventional matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) method. While many recent studies have reported successful LDI of thermally labile molecules from various surfaces, mostly from surfaces with nanostructures, understanding of what drives the LDI process still requires further study. This article briefly reviews the thermal aspects involved in the LDI mechanism, which can be characterized as rapid surface heating. The thermal mechanism was supported by observed LDI and postsource decay (PSD) of peptide ions produced from flat surfaces with special thermal properties including amorphous Si (a-Si) and tungsten silicide ($WSi_x$). In addition, the concept of rapid surface heating further suggests a practical strategy for the preparation of LDI sample plates, which allows us to choose various surface materials including crystalline Si (c-Si) and Au tailorable to specific applications.

  • We present a model for simulating high energy laser heating and ignition of confined energetic materials. The model considers effect of ablation of steel plate with long laser pulses and continuous lasers of several kilowatts and the thermal response of well-characterized high explosives for ignition. Since there is enough time for the thermal wave to propagate into the target and to create a region of hot spot in the high explosives, electron thermal diffusion of ultra-short(femto- and pico-second) lasing is ignored; instead, heat diffusion of absorbed laser energy in the solid target is modeled with thermal decomposition kinetic models of high explosives are used. Numerically simulated pulsed-laser heating of solid target and thermal explosion of cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine(RDX), triaminotrinitrobenzene(TATB), and octahydrotetranitrotetrazine(HMX) are compared to experimental results. The experimental and numerical results are in good agreement.

  • This work studies the effects of transient reflectance on the thermal responses of a metal(gold) thin-film during ultrashort laser heating. The heating process is calculated using the conventional conduction model (parabolic one-step: POS), parabolic two-step model (PTS) with and without variable properties, hyperbolic two-step model (HTS). Results from the HTS model are very similar to those from the PTS model, since the laser heating time in this study is greater than the electron relaxation time. PTS model with variable properties, however, results in totally different temperature profiles compared to those from POS models or calculation with constant properties. Transient reflectances are estimated from electron temperature distributions and based on the linear relationship between the electron temperature and complex dielectric constants. Reflectance of the front surface can be changed with respect to dielectric constants, while those of the rear surface remain unchanged.

  • Effects of temperature coefficients fur dielectric constants on transient reflectances and thermal responses have been investigated for a metal(gold) thin-film during ultrashort pulse laser heating. Heating processes are simulated using the conventional conduction model(parabolic one-step, POS), the parabolic tow-step model(PTS), the hyperbolic two-step model(HTS). Results fro the HTS model are very similar to those from the PTS model, since the laser heating time in this study is considerably greater than the electron relaxation time. PTS and HTS models, however, result in completely different temperature profiles from those obtained by the POS model due to slow electron-lattice interactions compared to laser pulse duration. Transient reflectances are directly estimated from the linear relationship between electron temperature and complex dielectric constants, while conventional approaches assume that the change in reflectances is proportional to that in temperatuer. Reflectances at the front surface vary considerably for various dielectric constants, while those at the rear surface remain unchanged relatively.

  • Residual stress is one of the causes which makes defects in engineering components and materials. These residual stresses can occur in many engineering structures and can sometimes lead to premature failures. There are commonly used methods by which residual stresses are currently measured. But these methods have a little damage and other problems; therefore, a new experimental technique has been devised to measure residual stress in materials with a combination of electronic laser interferometry, laser heating and finite element method. The electronic laser interferometer measures in-plane deformations while the laser heating and cooling provides for very localized stress relief. FEM is used for determining the heat temperature and other parameters. The residual stresses are determined by the amount of strain that is measured subsequent to the heat-up and cool-down of the region being interrogated. A simple model is presented to provide a description of the method. In this paper, the ambiguity problem for the fringe patterns has solved by a phase shifting method.
