  • The objective of this study was to perform failure analysis of an inlet pipe located in a governor valve of a steam turbine in a district heating system. During the operation, the temperature of the governor valve was increased to as high as ~500 ℃, which induced thermal expansion of the inlet pipe along both axial and radial directions. While the inlet pipe did not have contact with the valve seat, the side plane of the upside was constrained by the casing part, which led the inlet pipe to experience stress field in the form of fatigue and creep. The primary crack was initiated at about 30 mm below the top where the complex stress field was anticipated. These results suggest that the main failure mechanism is a combination of thermal fatigue and creep during the operation supported by the observation of apparent beach marks on the fracture surface and pores near the cracks, respectively.

  • Hyperthermia is a form of cancer treatment in which affected human tissue is exposed to $>40^{\circ}C$ temperature. In this paper, our goal is to assess the efficacy of fullerene agents to reduce heating time for cancer treatment. Such agents can accelerate heating of cancer cells and improve hyperthermia treatment efficacy. Typically, in vitro testing involves cancer cell culturing, heating cell cultures in accordance to specifications, and recording cancer cell viability after hyperthermia. To heat cell cultures, we design and evaluate a 2.4-GHz microwave cavity with controllable temperature. The cavity is comprised of a polystyrene cell culture dish (diameter = 54 mm, height = 13.5 mm) and a printed monopole antenna placed within the cavity for microwave heating. The culture temperature can be controlled through the intensity and duration of the antenna's microwave radiation. Heating experiments were carried out to validate the cavity's performance for F-12K culture medium (Kaighn's F-12K medium, ATCC). Importantly, fullerene agents were shown to reduce heating time and improve hyperthermia treatment efficacy. The culture medium temperature increased, on average, from $24.0^{\circ}C$ to $50.9^{\circ}C$ (without fullerene) and from $24.0^{\circ}C$ to $56.8^{\circ}C$ (with 3 mg/mL fullerene) within 15 minutes.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the microstructure and physical property of PET POY which was taut-annealed under various conditions. The DSC melting curves of annealed PET POY showed double melting peaks in most cases. As temperature and time increased, form II crystal became sharp and increased in size, and form I crystal decreased in size. The slower the heating rate, the higher the programmed heating effect during DSC analysis. Crystallinity and briefringence of annealed specimens increased as the treatment temperature and time increased. Breaking tenacity of specimens treated for 3 minutes increased as the treatment temperature increased, but others decreased. Elongation at break decreased as the annealing temperature and time increased. Dye uptake of annealed specimens decreased as the temperature increased up to $190^{\circ}C\~210^{\circ}C$. then the uptakes increased at higher temperatures. At the same temperature, dye uptake of the specimen decreased as time increased.

  • In shipyard, plate forming is widely used to form the ship hull plate in various shapes. Line heating method by using a flame torch is one of the major shipbuilding processes carried out by skilled workers. Since the forming characteristics depend upon their experiences in manual forming, there are much variations between products and difficulties in communication between engineers and workers. Hence, it needs to develop an automatic forming system which can not only reduce the working time and rework costs but also improve the working environment and hull forming productivity. One of the final goals of plate forming automation is to form a target shape from the initial plate automatically. For automated plate forming, it is required to determine where and how to heat on the plate. To realize this procedure, the inverse problem should be first solved and the effect of curvature shape formed at the heating path should be investigated. In this study, the inverse problem was solved by geometrical approach using the relationship between bending angle and radius of curvature of the curved shape. In addition, experiments of two-dimensional plate forming were performed with the distance-based method considering the curved bending with curvature. The result of the formed shape agreed considerably well with the target shape.

  • Various types of dried laver Pyropia yezoensis have been produced in response to increasing demand and other laver goods manufactured using different processing methods are continuously being developed. The dried laver used in this experiment was initially heated at $165^{\circ}C$ for 3 seconds, followed by second heating at a high temperature ($340-350^{\circ}C$) to increase the storage period and enhance taste and flavor. Nutrient analysis of each sample heated under three conditions revealed that the protein and lipid contents were highest in samples from D company, while the carbohydrate contents remained relatively stable. After storage for 10 weeks at room temperature, changes in the composition were evaluated. The results showed decrease in protein (30%-49%) and essential amino acid contents. During storage, the major unsaturated fatty acids contained in dried laver slightly changed to 53.4%-56.0% in the form of EPA, while saturated fatty acids slightly increased to 18.4%-22.6% in the form of palmitic acid. The variables derived from fatty acid composition, such as atherogenic and thrombogenic, and hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic dietary indices, and polyunsaturated fatty acids/saturated fatty acids ratio, also indicated reasonable levels of stability. However, the laver should be consumed within 2 months.

  • Morphological changes of starch granules from 12 different varieties of rice were examined by scanning electron microscopy during heating at 2.5% (w/v) concentration. Rice starch granules proceeded through a similar pattern of progressive morphological changes daring heating, regardless of variety. Rice starch granules began to swell radially in the initial stage of gelatinization and then undergo radial contraction and random tangential expansion to form complex structures in the latter stage of gelatinization temperature range. At higher temperatures, starch granules softened and melted into thin flat discs, and then stretched into thin filaments to form three-dimensional networks. These progressive morphological changes were reflected in the changes of swelling power, solubility and amylograph viscosity of starch. During the transition of melting or softening, swelling power, solubility and amylograph viscosity increased rapidly. The time of loss of granular structure of starch depended on gelatinization temperature range. The ratio of amylose to amylopectin was largely responsible fur the rate of melting or softening and the fineness of a three-dimensional filamentous network above the gelatinization temperature range. Therefore, both the gelatinization temperature range and amylose content of starch affect the rate of cooking, and amylose content of starch affects the final texture of cooked starch paste.

  • To improve mean-life and reliability of power cable, we have investigated specific heat (Cp) and thermal conductivity of XLPE insulator and semiconductive materials in 154kV underground power transmission cable. Specimens were respectively made of sheet form with EVA, EEA and EBA added 30wt%, carbon black, and the other was made of sheet form by cutting XLPE insulator in 154kV power cable. Specific heat (Cp) and thermal conductivity were· measured by DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and Nano Flash Diffusivity. Specific-heat measurement temperature ranges of XLPE insulator were from 20[$^{\circ}C$] to 90[$^{\circ}C$], and the heating rate was 1[$^{\circ}C$/min]. And the measurement temperatures of thermal conductivity were 25[$^{\circ}C$}], 55[$^{\circ}C$] and 90[$^{\circ}C$]. In case of semiconductive materials, the measurement temperature ranges of specific heat were from 20[$^{\circ}C$] to 60[$^{\circ}C$], and the heating rate was 1[$^{\circ}C$/min]. And the measurement temperatures of thermal conductivity were 25[$^{\circ}C$] and 55[$^{\circ}C$]. From these experimental results, both specific heat and thermal conductivity were increased by heating rate because volume of materials was expanded according to rise in temperature.

  • The thermal transitions of a nylon 6/layered silicate nanocomposite were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The drawn film of the nylon 6/layered silicate nanocomposite typically showed three endotherms in the DSC thermogram; a very broad endotherm at $\sim120^{\circ}C(T_{1})$, a double-melting endotherm at $\sim215^{\circ}C(T_{2})$, and a high temperature endotherm at $\sim240^{\circ}C(T_{3})$. The drawn film of the nylon 6/ layered silicate nanocomposite was comprised of a mixture of the $\alpha and \gamma$ forms, with $the \alpha form$ being generated by drawing the pressed film having $the \gamma form$. The melting and crystallization of the crystals were observed at the above thermal transitions during the heating experiment performed at the Pohang X-ray synchrotron radiation source (4C2). The newly generated form was meta-stable and melted $at {\sim}T_{1}$. The double-melting $at {\sim}T_{2}$ was due to the exothermic crystallization of $the \alpha form$ during the main endothermic melting of $the \gamma form$. $The \alpha form$ crystallized $at {\sim}T_{2}$ and melted $at {\sim}T_{3}$.

  • In present study, the cylindrical susceptor by the slip casting method was designed to apply high-temperature induction heating by using $(Mo,W)Si_2$ ceramics. $MoSi_2$-based materials were synthesized by SHS (Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis) method. The phase and crystal structure of $MoSi_2$-based materials were confirmed by XRD analysis. The shape of cylindrical mold was synthesized for various thickness by using the slip casting method. Finally, the susceptor for induction heating was processed by sintering and heat treatment to form $SiO_2$ layer, which was confirmed on the surface of susceptor by SEM/EDS analysis. To evaluate the heating performance of $(Mo,W)Si_2$ cylinder susceptor, we measured the maximum surface temperature and heating rate in comparison with the rod heating element under constantly applied power. The induction heating of the $(Mo,W)Si_2$ cylinder showed excellent heating performance, reaches the maximum temperature of $1457^{\circ}C$, with the average heating rate of $19^{\circ}C/s$ at 2 kW
