  • The objective of this study is to analyze the cooling performance of an air- cooling system for telecommunication equipment. Temperature variation and capacity were measured in an actual unit for telecommunication equipment. In addition, the cooling performance was measured by installing a silicon rubber heater as a heat source in a cabinet. The standard thermal load for telecommunication equipment was approximately 293 W, and the maximum temperature of the heated surface was $64.5^{\circ}C$. The average and maximum temperatures of the heated surface were proportional to the inlet air temperature. When the heat load increased from 293 W to 400 W, the maximum temperature of the heated surface was higher than $64.5^{\circ}C$ even though the inlet air temperature decreased from 25 to $11^{\circ}C$.

  • The gas insulation switchgear, which is a device for protecting a power system, cannot be supported by the insulation gas itself in a charge unit stored in a metal container. Therefore, molding technology is required to manufacture a gas insulation switch spacer. The APG method injection molding simulation was performed by applying the variables obtained through the physical properties of an epoxy composite used for manufacturing an insulating spacer to a moldflow software. After varying the temperature conditions of heater in the simulation, the thermal characteristics and the degree of hardening of the spacer were analyzed, based on which the optimum process conditions are presented.

  • An experimental study of the absorption process of water vapor into a lithium bromide solution was performed. For the purpose of developing high performance absorption chiller/hater utilizing lithium bromide solution as working fluid, it is important to improve the performance of absorber with the larger heat transfer area of the four heat exchangers. The experimental apparatus was composed of a plate type absorber which could increase the heat exchange area per unit volume to investigate more detail characteristics instead of the conventional type, that is, horizontal tube bundle type. The size of plate absorbers were made for 0.4m$\times$0.6m and the design objective of a refrigeration capacity was 1RT. In this experiment, three kinds of plate absorbers namely flat plate, dimple plate and groove plate were used. The obtained results were less than the design objective values, that is, the refrigeration capacity was about 0.3 ~0.4RT and the overall heat transfer coefficient was 500~600 kcal/$m^2$h$^{\circ}C$ at the standard conditions.

  • An on-farm trial was conducted in temperature-controlled lactation rooms at a commercial pig farm to investigate the efficacy of broadcasting sow suckling grunts from day 4 of lactation, on increasing piglet growth to weaning. In the Broadcast treatment, sows and litters were exposed to a 3-min broadcast from loud-speakers every 42 min. The Control treatment was not exposed to the broadcast. All sows and litters had similar husbandry and piglets were provided with creep feed on the floor twice daily. In each of the three replicates in time, the Broadcast and Control treatments were allocated to different lactation rooms at random and there were 12 sows and litters per treatment per replicate. A total of four identical lactation rooms were available for the trial, each containing 28 conventional sow and litter crates with piglet heater in the creep area. A non-trial room separated the two treatment rooms in each replicate to minimise the chance that the broadcast grunt stimulation was audible to the Control treatment litters. Five "normal and average-looking" piglets from the trial litters were weighed twice, 7 d apart. The cohort of five piglets was identified by ear-tags and formed the experimental unit for the statistical analysis. The average (${\pm}SD$) age of piglets at initial weighing was 7.7(${\pm}2.22$) days. For each litter, mean piglet live weight at day 14 of lactation was estimated by linear regression of the two weights recorded seven days apart, when on average, the Broadcast treatment had been exposed to the stimulation for 10 days. Piglets in the Broadcast treatment were heavier (p<0.01) at day 14 of lactation compared to Control treatment (4.24 and 3.92 kg, respectively) and tended to have a greater average daily weight gain over the 7-d period (245 and 228 g/day, respectively; p<0.08). The results suggest piglet growth was improved by about 8% in response to the regular, timed broadcast of sow suckling grunts in the lactation shed. The independent contributions of milk and creep feed to the improved growth remain to be determined.

  • Micropump is very useful component in micro/nano fluidics and bioMEMS applications. In this study, a bubble-powered micropump was fabricated and tested. The micropump consists of two-parallel micro line heaters, a pair of nozzle-diffuser flow controller and a 1 mm in diameter, 400 ${\mu}m$ in depth pumping chamber. The two-parallel micro line heaters with 20 ${\mu}m-width$ and 200 ${\mu}m-length$ were fabricated to be embedded in the silicon dioxide layer of a wafer which serves as a base plate for the micropump. The pumping chamber, the pair of nozzle-diffuser unit and microchannels including the liquid inlet and outlet port were fabricated by etching through another silicon wafer. A glass wafer (thickness of $525{\pm}15$ ${\mu}m$) having two holes of inlet and outlet ports of liquid serve as upper plate of the pump. Finally the silicon wafer of the base plate, the silicon wafer of pumping chamber and the glass wafer were aligned and bonded (Si-Si bonding and anodic bonding). A sequential photograph of bubble nucleation, growth and collapse was visualized by CCD camera. Clearly liquid flow through the nozzle during the period of bubble growth and slight back flow of liquid at the end of collapsing period can be seen. The mass flow rate was found to be dependent on the duty ratio and the operation frequency. As duty ratio increases, flow rate decreases gradually when the duty ratio exceeds 60%. Also as the operation frequency increases, the flow rate of the micropump decreases slightly.

  • This paper dealt with the developed portable electric field meter which consisted of planar-type sensor, analog amplifier with gain controller, A/D convertor, and display unit. The principle of the planar-type sensor for detecting time-varying electric field of extremely low frequency (ELF) bandwidth was described, and a calibration system using cylindrical guard electrodes and parallel-plate electrodes was proposed. From the calibration experiment, the frequency bandwidth and the sensitivity of the developed electric field meter was $17[Hz]{\sim}7[kHz]$, and 4.45[mV/V/m], respectively. Also it can measure the electric field strength up to 10[kV/m], and the measured result was displayed on the liquid crystal display in digit. The electric field meter can be widely applied to measure electric field strength radiated from power lines, computers, and home appliances such as hair dryer, heater, etc.

  • Hot Plate is the major unit that it used to remove damp of wafer surface, to strength adhesion of photoresist (PR) and to bake coated PR in FAB process of semiconductor. The badness of Hot Plate (HP) has directly influence upon the performance of wafer, it is necessary to guarantee the performance of HP. In this study, a reliability evaluation system has been designed and developed, which is to measure and to estimate thermal uniformity and flatness of HP in range of temperature 0~$250^\circC$. This system has included the techniques which measures and analyzes thermal uniformity using infrared thermal vision, and which compensates measuring error of flatness using laser displacement sensor For measuring flatness, a measurement stage of 3 axes are developed which adapts the precision encoder. The allowable error of this system in respect of thermal uniformity is less $than\pm0.1^\circC$ and in respect of flatness is less $than\pm$1mm . It is expected that the developed system can measure from $\Phi200mm\;(wafer 8")\;to\;\Phi300mm$ (wafer 12") and also can be used in performance test of the Cool Plate and industrial heater, etc.

  • It is necessary to install the inert gas system(IGS) for preventing fire and explosion in LNGC main diesel engine crankcase besides oil mist detector(OMD) unit with $CO_2$ gas injector. Therefore, to design the liquid nitrogen IGS, analytical work is conducted for predicting the heat input load of liquid nitrogen heater with two-phase stratified flow model. This paper also presents the effects of changes in pipe diameter, saturated pressure, and inclination angle by ship's movement on cryogenic two-phase stratified flows. It is found that the stratified model gives reasonable predictions, and the model is effective to predict the heat input load of liquid nitrogen IGS.

  • Sapphire wafers are used as an important substrate for the production of blue LED (light emitting diode) and the LED's performance largely depends on the quality of the sapphire single crystals. There are several crystal growth methods for sapphire crystals and Kyropoulos method is an efficient way to grow large diameter and high-quality sapphire single crystals with low dislocation density. During Kyropoulos growth, the convection of molten melt is largely influenced by the hot zone geometry such as crucible shape, heater and refractory arrangements. In this study, CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulations were performed according to the bottom/side ratios (per unit of the crucible surface area) of heaters. And, based on the results of analysis, the molten alumina flows and remelting phenomena were analyzed.
