  • Feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced severe wall thinning damage, which will increase as operating time progresses. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle inside feedwater heater installed downstream of the turbine extraction stream line. At that point, the extract steam from the turbine is two phase fluid at high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. Since it flows to reverse direction after impinging the impingement baffle, the shell wall of feedwater heaters may be affected by flow-accelerated corrosion. In this paper, to compare degree of shell wall thinning mitigation rate to squared type with mitigation rate of other type baffle plate, three different types of impingement baffle plate-squared, curved and mitigating type-applied inside the shell. With these comparison data, this paper describes operation of experiments and numerical analysis which is composed similar condition with real feed water heater. And flow visualization is operated for verification of experiments and numerical analysis. In conclusion, this study shows that mitigating type baffle plate is more effective than other baffle plate about prevention of pressure concentration and pressure value decrease.

  • In order to prevent the corrosion of component contacted primary water designed alloy 600 material in the nuclear power plant. But the primary water stress corrosion cracking(PWSCC) of alloy 600 and weld area occurs continuously due to the residual stress. The leakage accident resulted from PWSCC in the drain nozzle of the steam generator of domestic power plants. Heater sleeves of the pressurizer are welded with alloy 600 weld material and therefore exposed to the primary water environment. PWSCC occurred in heater sleeve material and weld area of many foreign power plants. The current issue of domestic nuclear power plants are consequently concentrated to PWSCC of similar material. In order to improve the detection and the sizing of the PWSCC in the welding sleeve of the pressurizer, the automatic UT system and multi-directions probe sets have been developed. The experimental studies have been performed using the mock-up block containing artificial reflectors(ID connected EDM notch) and semi-artificial cracks made from thermal fatigue. The automatic UT System is applied in the detection and the length sizing of the ID/OD on the tube and the J-groove weld area of the artificial reflectors and results of the detection and the sizing are compared respectively. Also, the developed automatic UT system is successfully accomplished to inspect the heater sleeve and the J-groove weld area on the pressurizer for the detection of PWSCC.

  • As absorption type heat pump for waste heat recovery is installed in combined cycle power plant for Energy Service Company, performance test is implemented to confirm the operation data on partial load. The operation data changes according to the heat pump operation on partial load are as follows. Total heat output increases, because waste heat of closed cooling water and a portion of LP steam from HRSG is supplied. But electric power output of steam turbine is reduced, because LP steam to steam turbine is reduced. And heat output from HP district heater and LP district heater is reduced, because HP turbine exhaust steam to HP district heater and LP district heater is reduced. On partial load operation, turbine output reduction is higher than the base load operation. Therefore, on partial load, heat pump should be operated in consideration of the heat output increase and electric power output reduction.

  • In this study, we fabricate a high efficiency heater consisting of the indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticle (NP)-paste and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and investigate the effect of PDMS on temperature maintenance of the heater through the comparison with the PDMS-free ITO film heater. Compared to the ITO film heater, the temperature of the PDMS/ITO film heater lasts 1.5 times longer. And the power consumption of the PDMS/ITO film heater is reduced by 35%, owing to the low thermal conductivity of the PDMS layer.

  • In this study, a device was used to conduct heat to the riser by combining a cylindrical heater with the riser to maintain the molten metal above a certain temperature while continuously compensating for the shrinkage phenomenon that occurs as the molten metal solidifies in the product area. A cylindrical heater is coupled to the riser portion of the upper part of the upper mold, and a heater portion mold is formed between the riser and the cylindrical heater. The cylindrical heater is connected to a controller to control the temperature and a power supply. The cylindrical heater conducts a heat source to the molten metal located on the riser and can continuously compensate for the shrinkage of the cast product by heating the molten metal located on the riser or maintaining it at a constant temperature. The block without a riser had a large shrinkage cavity at the top, and the top became concave due to shrinkage. There is no shrinkage in the block with the Ø100 mm riser. Blocks that did not apply heaters to the Ø50 mm riser experienced shrinkage around the riser and also at the bottom. There is no shrinkage in the block with the Ø50 mm riser to which the heater was applied.

  • The micro heater with PSG/$Si_{3}N_{4}$ diaphragm and platinum heater pattern was designed for micro-gas sensor fabrication. The platinum heater and the platinum electrode for sensing layer were designed on the same plane and fabricated in the single photolithography process. The thermal analyses including temperature distribution over the diaphragm and power consumption of the heater were carried by finite element method. The thermal properties of the microsensor with both heater and sensing electrode on the same plane was compared with that of the typical microsensor which had the structure of sensing layer/insulator/heater on the diaphragm.

  • Using positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heater as supplementary heating for diesel engine vehicles with low heat source is a good method to enhance the heating performance during cold start. In this study, the PTC elements were made by using screen printing process for forming ohmic contact layer, and prototype of PTC heater was designed and made for a diesel engine vehicle. In process of designing the PTC heater, the thermal flow analysis of PTC element modules was conducted for verifying the effect of the shapes of contact surface between each of the components (cooling fin, insulator, ceramic element). We also investigated the performance characteristic (heating capacity, energy efficiency, pressure drop) of the PTC heater through the experiments. Therefore, the experimental results indicated that prototype of PTC heater had satisfactory performance. This study will be basis for improving the manufacturing process and increasing the performance of the PTC element and heater.

  • The paper presents a single-heater microfluid injector, whose ejected droplet volume is adjusted by digital current path control for a single microheater. The previous droplet volume adjustable methods have used the digital current control for multiple heaters or the analog current control for a single heater, while the present method uses the digital current control for a single microheater. Two different microinjectors, having a rectangular heater and a circular hearter, are designed and fabricated in the chip area of $7.64\;mm{\times}5.26\;mm$. The fabricated microinjectors have been tested and characterized for the number, size, shape and lifetime of the generated bubbles as well as for the volume and velocity of the ejected droplets. The input power for the rectangular heater and the circular heater has been varied in the ranges of $8.7{\sim}24.9{\mu}W\;and\;8.1{\sim}43.8{\mu}W$, respectively. The projected area of the generated bubble has been changed in the ranges of $440{\sim}l,3600{\mu}m^2\;and\;800{\sim}3,300{\mu}m^2$ for the rectangular heater and the circular heater, respectively. The microinjector with the rectangular heater ejects three discrete levels of the droplet in the volume range of $9.4{\sim}20.7pl$ with the velocity range of $0.8{\sim}1.7m/s$, while the microinjector with the circular heater achieves five discrete levels of the droplet in the volume range of $7.4{\sim}27.4pl$ with the velocity range of $0.5{\sim}2.8m/s$.

  • Thermoacoustic power generation by a spiral heater in the Rijke tube was analyzed numerically. In the analysis, variables were normalized by the angular frequency of the sound and the thermal diffusivity of the air. The effect of the heater wire diameter d, the spacing between wires P-d, and the air-current velocity $U_0$, upon the power generation was obtained and discussed. When the spacing is broad enough, the normalized velocity is $U_0{\approx}0.8$ and the diameter is $d{\approx}4$ for the maximum power generation. With decrease of the spacing, however, the power generation increases more than 5 times and becomes maximum around $d{\approx}2$, $P-d{\approx}3$. And the velocity $U_0{\approx}0.8$ for the maximum power generation is almost independent of the wire spacing.

  • A fast and inexpensive approximate analysis method to predict power output characteristics of the Stilting engines in a preliminary design stage was investigated. In basic equations proposed by Walker, typical temperatures of working fluids in expansion and compression spaces were treated as those of working fluids in heater and cooler respectively. While the temperature of working fluid in the expansion space was actually lower than that of working fluid in the heater, the temperature of working fluid in the compression space was higher than that of working fluids in the cooler. In this paper, the working fluid temperature of expansion space was treated as lower than the heater temperature and that of compression space was treated as higher than the cooler temperature. Also, according to them, the power output characteristics of the Stirling engine were evaluated with respect to the GPU-3 and 4-215 Stilting engines. The following conclusions were drawn from the analysis. 1. Using the available experimental data from the GPU-3 Stirling engine, it was shown that the approximate analysis predicts the brake power with a maximum error of 19 percent at 1, 000rpm and with a minimum error of 3 percent at 2, 000rpm. 2. The approximate analysis data which for the GPU-3 Stirling engine were much closer to the experimental data than those of adiabatic 2nd order and 3rd order analysis within 1, 500rpm to 2, 500rpm. 3. The approximate analysis data which for the GPU-3 and 4-215 Stilting engines were much closer to the experimental data than those of the Beal number analysis.
