  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the extent to which dental laboratories use proper materials, procedures, devices, and equipments to fabricate crown & bridge, PFM(Porcelain Fused to Metal) crown & bridge, partial denture, complete denture, and other prosteses. 100 laboratories in Seoul were selected for this investigation. Questionnaires were constructed focusing on five topocs:crown & bridge, PFM crown & bridge, partial denture, complete denture, and other prostheses. The results from this survey were as follows : 1. Most dental laboratories used old, inexpensive, and familiar materials rather than newly developed ones. 2. Most of the dental technicians did not stick to the standard procedures of handling materials, but to their own experiences. 3. Newly developed equipments to fabricate dental prostheses were possessed by nearly 30% dental laboratories. 4. About 80% of dental laboratories were using the procedures they had learned in the school : die trimming for accurate crown margin and softening heat treatment after RPD gold casting. But less than 30% of laboratories were shown to follow the boxing procedure to produce master cast and laboratory remounting in the process of complete denture. The findings show that dental laboratory procedures to fabricate dental prostheses are incomplete and inaccurate in some instances. So, further studies are neededs to clarify the causes of some inaccurate procedures, the better and more equipments should be supplied to produce the more accurate dental posthesis, and more efforts at enancing the appropriate use of dental materials and procedures should be made.

  • As the intense heat continues, many cases of highway pavement blow up and bridge expansion joints damages have been inspected. Especially, Expansion joint closure of bridges is an important problem that can threat the safety of the bridge structure or reduce long-term durability. This paper proposed a structural analysis method for bridges having expansion joint closure and structural analysis was performed to verify the effects according to bridge types. Analysis bridges were divided into four types: concrete and steel bridges, shallow and piled foundations. To induce the situation of abutments and bridge decks are jammed, the following loads were additionally considered; lateral flow pressure, pavement expansion by alkali-aggregate reaction, creep settlement of backfill. The structural analysis method was verified by comparing the structural analysis results with the actually measured joint gap data. In addition, behavioral analysis due to joint closure was conducted to confirm the change in safety ratio by type of superstructure as the axial force increased.

  • Currently, office buildings in Korea tend to adopt as their outer wall the curtain wall structure which can be easily constructed and has beautiful external appearance as well. However, the problem is that the curtain wall structure does not have a uniform composition unlike the wall of existing reinforced concrete structures and has a frame made of metal with high heat conduction. Therefore, it is expected that the structure will be highly influenced by the thermal bridge. Thereupon, this study analyzes how to set up the composition of the wall system and heat transmission rate in consideration of the thermal characteristics of the curtain wall structure and applies it in practice by simulation in order to propose a guideline for the energy simulation method of the curtain wall structure and analyze its differences from existing simulation methods.

  • Excessively elevated temperature can lead to cracks in prestressed concrete (PC) continuous bridge with box girder on the pier top at cement hydration age. This paper presents a case study for evaluating the behavior of PC box girder during the early hydration age using a two-stage computational model, in the form of computer program ANSYS, namely, 3-D temperature evaluation and determination of mechanical response in PC box girders. A numerical model considering time-dependent wind speed and ambient temperature in ANSYS for tracing the thermal and mechanical response of box girder is developed. The predicted results were compared to show good agreement with the measured data from the PC box girder of the Zhaoshi Bridge in China. Then, based on the validated numerical model three parameters were incorporated to analyze the evolution of the temperature and stress within box girder caused by cement hydration heat. The results of case study indicate that the wind speed can change the degradation history of temperature and stress and reduce peak value of them. The initial casting temperature of concrete is the most significant parameter which controls cracking of PC box girder on pier top at cement hydration age. Increasing the curing temperature is detrimental to prevent cracking.

  • Fretting is a kind of surface degradation mechanism observed in mechanical components and structures. The fretting damage decreases into 50-70% of the plain fatigue strength. The connecting rod for automobile has been used in special environments and various loading conditions. Failure of connecting rod in automotive engine may cause catastrophic situation. In this study, we investigated the fatigue characteristic of connecting rod material for an automobile. Fatigue life is defined as the number of cyclic stress to failure by regular cyclic stress. Fatigue life of C70S6 specimen was obtained from 134,000 to 147,000 cycles. Fatigue limit showed 432MPa by normal fatigue test. The other hands, it was 96MPa in the case of fretting fatigue test. It was extremely lower than that of a normal fatigue test. From observation of fracture surface, it was confirmed that the fatigue crack was initiated at the boundary of a specimen and bridge pad.

  • A novel electro-mechanical implantable ventricular assist system is developed as a bridge to transplantation or recovery for patients with end-stage heart failure. The developed system is composed of an implanted blood pump, an external monitoring system which stores data, and a wearable system including a portable external driver and a portable power supply system. The blood pump is designed to be implanted into the left upper abdominal space and provides blood flow from the left ventricular apex to the aorta. The pulsatile blood flow is generated by a double cylindrical cam. There was mo excessive heat emission from the blood pump into the temperature-controlled chamber in the heat test and no stagnated flow within the blood sac by the observation in the flow visualization test. Animal experiments were performed using sheep and calves. The maximum assist flow rate reached 7.85L/min in the animal experiment. The evaluation results showed that the developed system was feasible for the implantable ventricular assist system. The long-term in vitro durability test and mid-term in vivo experiments are in progress and mow the modified next model is under development.

  • This study is to evaluate the thermal insulation of the curtain wall of the buildings constructed since the 1990s to the buildings currently under construction in 2011 and to provide the basic data for repairing and reinforcing and designing the thermal insulation. To this effect, the temperature difference by part was analyzed through measuring the inside and outside surface temperature of the curtain wall of the office building, and thereafter, the conditions of the thermal insulation and the thermal bridge part were examined. The result of the study is as follows; Not only in the winter season when the temperature difference between the indoor-outdoor is over $20^{\circ}C$, but also in the summer season when there is a small temperature difference, the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the frame is $2^{\circ}C{\sim}4^{\circ}C$ equally. Under such conditions as stated above, the thermal bridge occurred, which resulted from the heat flow of the steel frame part (mullion, transom), and therefore, the reinforcement of the thermal insulation is considered to be needed.

  • Building energy simulations which are mainly used in Korea have evaluated the building energy performance with the different thermal conductivity of construction materials. In order to evaluate the energy consumption accurately, the difference in thermal conductivity of the wood used in stud for wooden structure was confirmed from the each simulation. In addition, the thermal transmission of building members and the thermal bridge at the conjunction of building members according to thermal conductivity from each simulation programs were researched. The thermal conductivity of pine that has the largest variation among the energy simulations was applied to the thermal properties of studs in wooden structure. The maximum error between the maximum and minimum thermal transmission of roof, wall, and floor slab was $0.023W/m^2{\cdot}K$. Plus, that thermal bridge at Rafter junction on the roof, roof-wall joint, and floor slab-wall joint was $0.025W/m{\cdot}K$. The heat transfer image for changes in temperature and the heat exchange were analyzed by HEAT2 program. The distorted temperature lines were found around the insufficient insulated connection parts. It was predicted that the temperature at the distorted parts in the analyzed image was lower than that of the other portion of the other structures.
